MISSION STATEMENT
St. Peter Claver Catholic Church is a vibrant, spirit-filled, evangelizing community that is grounded in
the Eucharist and celebrates the culture and traditions of our African-American heritage.
Strengthened by our belief in Jesus Christ and trusting in God’s Word, we transform our community through
acts of justice by caring for the spiritual and physical needs of His people.
ALL SOULS’ DAY
Scripture Insights
In most of the Old Testament, there was no belief in
the afterlife; the believer’s only opportunity to live
with God was in this life. Physical death was seen as
the end of life in the presence of god. But the Book of
Wisdom tells us that those who embrace wisdom will
live in grace and mercy with God forever. The First
Reading, from Wisdom, shows some of the first indications of the belief that the deceased survive physical
death. This growing sense of life after death sets in a
new light today’s Responsorial Psalm, the most beloved prayer in the Bible. The Shepherd is our true
guide, not only through the sufferings in this life, but
as our soul navigates the final journey through death
to new life in Christ. In the Second Reading, Paul
reflects on the transition point at death, when we will
face the divine Judge. There is no sense of
“balancing” the scales of justice in Paul’s letter. The
person we will meet across the divide of death is Jesus
Christ, who died for us while we were unworthy of
his love and care. Christ has already shown us that
his justice resides in the love he offers in reconciling
us to the Father. This marvelous love and reconciliation awaiting us rightly inspires our confident hope,
our “boast” in God. The Gospel presents Jesus as the
source of eternal life after death. As the visible presence of the invisible God, he enacts only the will “of
the one who sent me,” who commanded that he
should not “lose” anyone in his charge. A subtle condition suggests we must receive the life Jesus offers”
“everyone who sees the Son and believes in him” will
“have eternal life.” Seeing and believing are complementary and necessary ways of personally accepting
this grace.


PRAYER FOR THOUGHT: the souls of the just are
in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. They
seemed to be dead and their passing away was thought an
affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction.
But they are in peace. The Souls of the Just are in the hand
of GOD. Grant them rest, O Lord!

NATIONAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH
The lives and work of persons of African descent and others designated as special people of God who lived a lift
serving God are remembered. It is a time to tell the stories
of the contributions of African and African Americans to
the Catholic Church. This is an opportunity as a church
family to tell the story of how and why we are Catholic.
The rich history of the Black Catholic Churches in Treme
or even the greater New Orleans area is a great place to
begin teaching our youth so that they know upon whose
shoulders they stand. Perhaps you might share the story of
why St. Peter Claver parish was formed by the Josephite
Fathers in 1920 or the works of St. Katherine Drexel in
education and the courageous journey of Blessed Henriette
DeLille. Make a date with your family to hand on the history and tell your story of being Black and Catholic. Challenge the youth to name the black Catholic Churches in
New Orleans that were founded with the purpose of ministering to Blacks.
NOLA Interfaith Peace Initiative
Join us the NOLA Interfaith Peace Initiative as
we celebrate the One Year Anniversary of our
Covenant Signing, Tuesday, November 11,
2014 at 6:00 p.m. here in the Church. The
evening will include song, testimonies and a
recommitment to PEACE for all gathered. We
will celebrate our efforts over the past year and
proclaim our recommitment to PEACE. This is
open to the PUBLIC!!

Isaiah 43 Program:
Supporting Families in our Community
St. Peter Claver Parish is please to announce that
we will be hosting the Cathedral Deanery's
Isaiah 43 Active Parenting Series. Parents and
other caregivers are welcome to join us for this
six-week series. The sessions has begun, the following five interact sessions of education, support and
fellowship for parents and guardians; Session 3:
November 3rd; Session 4: November 17th and Session 5: December 1, 2014. All Sessions will begin at
5:30 p.m. in the School Hall, dinner and child care

Tuesday, November 25, 2014, St. Peter Claver Social
Ministry will be hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner for
those in the community. .Dinner will be served from
12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. in the School Cafeteria,
1020 N. Prieur Street Volunteers are needed; Please
call the Parish Office to sign-up.
Will take place on Friday, November 7, 2014 for our
Senior Citizens at 4:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. The
celebration includes food, music, games and birthday gifts
for all seniors in attendance. We need gifts for our seniors
and we welcome volunteers to assist and serve. If you can
help in any way, please call the Parish Office to share your
time and talent to bring bright moments to our seniors.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month
The term “Diabetes mellitus” refers to a group of disease that affect how your body uses blood glucose,
commonly called blood sugar. Sugar is vital to your
health because its’; an important source of energy for
the cells that make up your muscles and tissues. It’s
your brain’s main source of fuel. If you have diabetes,
no matter what type, it means you have too much sugar in your blood. Too much sugar in your blood can
lead to serious health problems. Chronic diabetes conditions include type 1 diabetes (can develop at any
age, it typically appears during childhood or adolescence) and type 2 diabetes (most common type, can
develop at any age and is often preventable). These
signs and symptoms may indicate you have diabetes:
Increase thirst; Frequent urination; Extreme hunger;
Unexplained weight loss; Fatigue; Blurred vision;
Slow-healing sores; Mild high blood pressure; Frequent indentions, such as gum or skin infections and
vaginal or bladder infections. If you notice any possible diabetes symptoms, contact your doctor. The
earlier the condition is diagnosed, the sooner treatment can begin.

Christmas Initiative 2014
“Make Room and Prepare for the Coming of the
Lord” in our homes, in our hearts, and recognizing
His presence in us and in others is our theme this
holiday season. Our Advent hope is to be able to
help families in our communities prepare and share
in the joy of Christ’s coming. Adopting a family is a
wonderful way to share your blessings with others
