Conference Programme Welcome Dear Delegates, It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 5TH Annual Soweto Conference on Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development. This event has become an annual highlight on the Centre for Small Business Development (CSBD) in the Faculty of Management at the University of Johannesburg’s calendar of events. We are delighted to welcome the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP) as a key sponsor for 2014. This is the third year that the GEP has provided its generous support of this conference. The theme of this year’s event was largely driven by the recommendations received at our previous conference. It soon became evident that creating a suitable platform to explore some of the most pressing challenges facing entrepreneurs and township enterprises was vital. This year’s event will provide the ideal 2 environment to facilitate debate, as well as the exchange of skills and ideas. It is with great pride that we present one of the conference’s most exciting themes to date: Promoting township business competitiveness: Co-existence of immigrant, big and small township enterprises. Entrepreneurship and small business development are critical success factors for South Africa’s continued economic growth. However, for many years a large number of local business owners have perceived the existence of foreign-owned enterprises and big business, as a growth infringement on their own enterprises. It is our belief that we, in the local context, can gain significant advantages by exploring how other countries have overcome these challenges. It is our hope that this event will serve as a platform to explore and debate the possibility of partnerships between foreign and locally owned businesses; that we can look at ways in which government may be able to assist through legislative changes; and how big businesses can coexist with smaller enterprises. The goal is to try and achieve a status quo that stimulates economic development. This year’s conference is once again rich with practical training including: Business Idea Generation and Innovation as well as Social Media Marketing. The next two days will include various local and international experts who will share knowledge, best practice and case studies of success stories in other countries. Delegates will learn more about how to gain access to finance, and most importantly what qualities financial institutions look for in entrepreneurs who are looking to gain access to loans. The CSBD would also like to extend our sincere thanks to all our sponsors: The Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP), The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), EDULOAN, Thebe Foundation, Soweto TV, The Faculty of Management and The University of Johannesburg (UJ). We also deeply appreciate the time, effort and experience that each of our speakers bring to this event. We hope the conference will motivate and inspire the township community to start engaging with their own environment. We want entrepreneurs, both new and established, to explore new avenues for opportunity and innovation. Ms Moipone Molotsi Director: Centre for Small Business Development (CSBD) Conference Chairperson I wish to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of my highly capable team at the CSBD, without whom this event would not be possible. 3 2014 | 5th Annual Soweto Conference on Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development Centre for Small Business Development (CSBD) FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT | Developing Future-fit Leadership Conference Programme 29–31 OCTOBER 2014 UJ SOWETO CAMPUS, IMBIZO HALL Wednesday, 29 October 2014 TIME SESSION DESCRIPTION OPENING – TRAINING DAY 07h00 – 08h30 REGISTRATION COMPUTER ROOM 1 TRAINING 1 SOCIAL MEDIA AND E-MARKETING (BASIC) Facilitated by Flamewave Solutions TRAINING 2 SOCIAL MEDIA AND E-MARKETING (ADVANCED) Facilitated by Flamewave Solutions TRAINING ROOM 1 09h00 – 16h30 COMPUTER ROOM 2 TRAINING DAY – SESSION 1 4 TRAINING 3 INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY Facilitated by GIBBS Promoting township business competitiveness: Co-existence of immigrant, big and small township enterprises. At the age of 24, Dr Maponya, then a teacher, took a job as a clothing maker. With the capital acquired he attempted to open a clothing retailer in Soweto but was blocked by the government’s refusal to grant him a license despite the intervention by the law firm created by Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela. Instead, in the early 1950s Dr Maponya and his wife Marina established the Dube Hygenic Dairy which employed a fleet of boys on bicycles to deliver milk to customers in Soweto who had no access to electricity or refrigeration. By the 1970s the retail empire had grown to include several general stores, car dealerships and petrol stations. In the 1960s Dr Maponya was a founding member and the first President of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (NAFCOC). On 27 September 2007, Nelson Mandela opened the Maponya Mall in Soweto. One of the largest shopping centers in the country. It holds more than 200 stores and a cinema complex. Dr Maponya acquired the land where the mall is situated in 1979, initially on a 100 year lease, but in 1994, after several attempts, he acquired it. Various attempts to finance construction failed until Dr Maponya’s holding company entered into a joint venture with Zenprop Property Holdings. 10 Dr Maponya’s legacy exceeds the idea of a competitive strategy to entrench technical skills and entrepreneurship development in South Africa. He is well known in South Africa, and in Soweto, in particular as a very successful businessman who has survived the oppressive days of Apartheid. He can be described as a talented entrepreneur, innovative and creative. Promoting township business competitiveness: Co-existence of immigrant, big and small township enterprises.
