From the Pastor’s Desk
major tourist a rac on in Palermo, Sicily, and Rome
are the OFM Capuchin cemeteries. I have always
had an interest in cemeteries. Some may think
that I am stranger than meets the eye! But there is
something about passing the headstones of those who have
gone home to God. When I walk through an old cemetery,
especially in San Juan Bau sta, not only do I pass by and recall
my own family members for many genera ons, but also the
res ng place of many people I knew or whose families I know.
These places are living memorials of some great and some
not so great people who have in some way had an impact on
my life.
The Hispanic culture has a
wonderful tradi on of families
construc ng altars on this day of
All Souls, be er known as El Dia
de los Muertos, the Day of the
Dead. On these altars are placed
photographs of important people
in the life of the family. Along with
the photographs are some special
remembrances of the deceased.
The photographs and mementos
are sacramentals that make the
deceased loved ones present to
their family and friends. This is a wonderful tradi on.
I think a danger of our American imagina on is that
death is so sterile and final. This really is contrary to our faith
as Chris ans and Catholics.
The doctrine of the Communion of Saints is integral to
who we are. Death is not an end, but a con nua on of a relaonship of love. Death does not end that rela onship. This is
part of the doctrine of the Resurrec on of Jesus. There is no
longer a finality of physical death. The most important part of
who we are and the rela onships we form in life con nues for
all eternity. The spirit of God that is breathed into each living
person cannot die. This spirit that was given in life con nue
in death.
Many of us were raised to pray for the Poor Souls in
Purgatory. I am not really sure if Purgatory is a place or
simply a process of purging our hearts and souls of all that

is more important than God. At the me of death, I firmly
believe that we have the invita on to embrace our God face
to face. Wow, what a vision that might be! Some of us may
not be ready to have that encounter because our lives are too
clu ered with fears, worries, resentments, anger, etc., that
block that encounter. So, we con nue to pray for those who
have passed from this earthly life, just as we may have prayed
for them in life, that they be free to let go of all that blocks
them from the loving embrace of God. I really believe that
Purgatory does not begin at death, but right now in life.
This is that me of the year not
only to remember those who have
passed from this life but also to
take stock of our own lives as to
what it is we need to relinquish
to be able to hear the invita on
of God and, when the moment
comes, to pass freely from the
embrace of our loved ones to the
loving embrace of God.
Let us bring to prayer those
who have passed this year. I bring
to mind my Dad who taught me so
well to care about others and to be
of generous service. I remember the lady from Oaxaca, Mexico who I was with last Monday, and who died suddenly from
leukemia that had been diagnosed less than a few days before.
I remember the middle-aged man, a physician, whose funeral
we celebrated a week or so ago, who cared for people suﬀering
from HIV and AIDS and generously served the poorest of the
poor in the tropics of South America on a regular basis. They
have touched my life, and I remember the good they did, and
the Spirit of God that they generously shared with so many.
Who are those that rise in your consciousness? Let us
bring them to prayer in thanksgiving and in the hope that our
prayer will in some way bring them closer to the embrace of
our loving God—if they are not already there.

preparing a wonderful opportunity for women to take me
away from their busy lives to draw closer to God. She worked
for 10 years facilita ng retreats for the na onal spiritual
growth ministry, Ministry of Mothers Sharing, and eight years
ago, she created a retreat series, “Retreat, Reflect, Renew,”
which became the inspira on for her book of the same tle.
She now facilitates retreats on the book’s concepts at Mercy
Center Auburn.

request, on a trial basis, to oﬀer mustum at Communion me for those unable to consume alcohol. This will be a new
prac ce in the Diocese of Sacramento. Mustum is grape juice that contains no addi ves,
and in which the fermenta on process has been suspended.
It is available from only two sources in the United States.

If you wish to receive the Blood of Christ in the form of
mustum, please let Fr. Ken know. Because it is being oﬀered
on a trial basis, we need to keep count of how many people
ask for this op on, and we also need to know so that we can
prepare enough for all those who wish to receive in this way.
The Blessed Sacrament in the form of mustum will be oﬀered
in one cup next to the minister serving the low-gluten hosts at
the foot of the pillar just inside the K St. transept. As with the
minister oﬀering the low-gluten hosts, this minister can be
iden fied by a nametag, “Mustum.”

group, but we can always use more help.

hours Saturday mornings from 7:00am9:00am. We have something for everyone. With a full crew we can break up
the work into sec ons vacuuming, dus ng, polishing, removing wax, clearing oﬀ used candles, washing the pews, etc. We
are currently se ng up a monthly schedule.

presence for the homeless guests of
our parish. The commitment is one
day a week, 6:00pm-7:30pm. This
ministry provides a safe, peaceful
and private place for our guests to
sleep at the Parish Center Courtyard.
The ministry is rooted in scripture
and responds to the call to welcome strangers, provide shelter
to the wanderer and not turn away from the needs of others.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW)
Sundays during the Liturgy of the Word at our 9:30am
Mass, children K-4th grade are escorted from the church to
the Parish Center Chapel by an adult catechist for CLOW. No
registra on required. Parents may accompany their children.
Healing of Grief and Loss
December 6: 9:15am-3:00pm, Mercy Center Auburn.
Facilitators: Sr. Margaret Ann Walsh, spiritual director and
former chaplaincy director; and Barbara Freuler, member of the
“Ministry to the Bereaved” at St. Teresa Parish, Auburn. Grief is
a normal response to loss or change. Support at the right me
can truly make a diﬀerence. This day oﬀers prac cal tools for
dealing with grief, which include prayer, instruc on,reflec on,
and sharing—and concludes with a meaningful and comfor ng
ritual. Our commitment is to help you on the path to recovery
with an open heart filled with loving remembrance, ready to
embrace life. This day has brought healing to numerous people.
