THE FOUNDATION OF THE
UNIVERSAL CHURCH
It has been celebrated as a solemn
feast for years, but unless you are in
Rome it often goes unnoticed. When
the calendar date of November 9th
happens to fall on a Sunday, then in
every church throughout the world, it
is truly given its proper respect.
This weekend, November 8&9, we are celebrating the feast
of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica. This monumental
church on the Lateran Hill in Rome has a very important
history. Its proper name is “The Archbasilica of Christ our
Savior and St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in
the Lateran.” In Pre-Christian Rome, it was the site of a
mansion belonging to the Laterani Family. The Emperor
Nero confiscated the land when a member of the Laterini
family was accused of conspiracy. Soon after, a fort was
erected on the property.
When Constantine became Emperor of Rome in 313AD,
the fort was the headquarters of soldiers who fought against
him. He had these Roman guards suppressed and the fort
destroyed.
Through a marriage, Constantine became the
owner of the property and he chose to give the Lateran Palace
to Pope Miltiades, the Bishop of Rome. By 324 the palace
and adjoining basilica were enlarged and became the official
residence of the Bishop of Rome and his Cathedral Church.
Cathedral Churches are the official church were the bishop’s
throne, his “Cathedra (seat)” is located. In that dedication,
Pope Sylvester called it the “Domus Dei”, the “House of
God.”
Over the years it was the site of numerous important
Church Councils as well as the Papal Palace and Cathedral.
St. Peter’s in the Vatican is a shrine church built over the tomb
of St. Peter, but not a cathedral. Throughout the following
centuries, the church building was beautified, but when the
Pope left Rome during the 14th Century and moved the Papal
Court to Avignon, France the Basilica and Palace were
neglected and fell into disrepair. When the Pope returned to
Rome after seventy years in France, the Lateran Palace which
was scarred by neglect and numerous fires, was considered
inadequate as a dwelling. For this reason, the Papal Palace
was built along side of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The
Pope has lived there ever since. But the Lateran Basilica is
still the First Church of Rome and of the Universal Church. It
is called the “Mother Church of the whole world,” and ranks
above all other churches including St. Peter’s Basilica.
In remembering its dedication, we are not simply
celebrating a beautiful building, rich in art and history. We
are celebrating the Christian Community that gathers to be
formed by the Gospel, challenged by the Gospel, and sent
from the Table of Eucharist to live the Gospel. Every family
needs a home in which to gather to be sheltered, renewed,
refreshed, and strengthened. The Lateran Basilica is a living
sign of that home. It is above all, a parish and a home for
God’s children. It is a Cathedral, a place where the “Father of
the Household”, the Bishop, can gather his family to speak to
them the heart of the Gospel. It is a “Domus Dei”, a House of
God where we experience the living presence of Christ in
Word and Sacrament and give thanks to the Father for the gift
of the fullness of life. It is also the “Domus Ecclesia”, the
House of people assembled in God’s presence.
This weekend we are celebrating and giving thanks for
more than a beautiful historic building.

on those who love this house of faith as the inspiration of their
labor, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit, and may that
blessing rest on you, both on your going out and your coming
in.
PARISH MEMBERSHIP
All adult Catholics should officially register in the parish.
Young adults of working age should register independently of
their parents even if ‘living at home’. We cannot serve you
by issuing letters for sponsorship of Baptism, Confirmation, or
Matrimony, nor give character references for teaching
positions, etc. if we do not know you. All new members of
our faith family are encouraged to come to the parish so we
can meet you. Call the rectory for an appointment. Also,
please notify the parish office of any changes in address,
telephone number, or if you are leaving the parish.
OFFERTORY COLLECTION
To meet the needs of our parish family and to proclaim the
Gospel of Christ Jesus:
Budget requirements: $13,000 each WEEK
- To offer our young people Youth Ministry experiences
- To offer our children a faith-filled program
of learning about Jesus and the Gospel
- To worship with faith and grace at our Sunday Eucharist
- To reach out to God’s people in need have support and
care.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

The RCIA assists adults on their faith journey to seek a
relationship with the living God and enter a way of faith and
conversation as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. During this
journey, at the proper time, they will receive the sacraments of
Christian Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
The group gathers weekly after the 10:30 AM Mass to break
open the Word and is comprised of unbaptized adults,
baptized adults from other Christian traditions, and Roman
Catholics who have not celebrated Confirmation and possibly
First Eucharist. These adults meet in a group setting with
catechists who share faith through prayer, talks and
discussions. Please share this ministry with anyone who you
think may be interested and contact Joanne Calafiore at the

can plant the seeds of faith with others!

OF MINISTRY
Please consider ministering in our parish as a Lector
or Communion Minister. We are in need of your
gifts and talents so the presence of Christ in Word
and Sacrament can be experienced by all. Please

Our religious formation classes have been buzzing with
activity since mid- September. Guided gently and lovingly by
a team of dedicated catechists, nearly 400 children in
Kindergarten through 8th grade fill our classrooms with
enthusiasm and energy as they continue on their faith
journeys. Through weekly lessons, activities, Bible stories and
music, our children learn to live as young disciples of Jesus.
And through faithful Mass attendance each and every Sunday,
they grow closer to Jesus and begin to understand more fully
who we are as people of Church.
8th Grade News
On October 30, the 8th Grade presented to the students at
Immaculate Heart of Mary a presentation about the Civil War.
The presentation included Civil War technology, music and
poetry from the time period and the role of women during the
war. The students were shown through their Differentiated
Instruction, different ways to approach various topics. Good
job 8th Grade!
COOP Exam
On Friday, November 7, 8th Grade students from the diocese
took the placement test for entry into Diocesan Catholic High
Schools. Good Luck to all who took the test.
AMAZING AUTUMN AUCTION
FEED THE HUNGRY
In the past it has been our mission to take a food collection on
the fourth Sunday of the month for the Fr. English Center in
Paterson. During this past Lent we collected on a weekly
basis and shared the food between the Fr. English Center and
the Wayne Interfaith Food Pantry.
It was wonderfully
successful. Going forward the Food Collection Barrel will
be in the vestibule permanently to receive donation that will
be shared with both food pantries. Thank you for your care
for those that go hungry in our community and our Diocese.
THANKSGIVING FOOD COLLECTION
Our annual Thanksgiving Food collection
will be held on November 22-23, 2014. All
food donations will be distributed among
the Father English Center in Paterson and
the Wayne Interfaith Network (WIN) Food
Pantry.
Donate any non-perishable food items, not just holiday
foods. Teens will be available at each Mass (on the collection
weekend) to carry food items to the Church from your car.
Monetary donations are also being collected to assist our effort
in feeding the hungry.
In addition, if you would like to donate a turkey, they will be
collected on Sunday, November 23rd from 1-2 PM ONLY in
the church parking lot. This is the only time we are able to
collect turkeys since our church does not have storage
facilities and the turkeys need to be immediately transported to
the pantry for distribution.

to the poor and the hungry.

Confirmation
November 16th is the next Faith Sharing Session for
both 1st and 2nd year candidates.
Year One Candidates: All sponsor forms are due
this month. Blank forms can be found in the back of
the “Mass sign in” binder in the vestibule.
Year Two Candidates: The ACRE Test will be held
on Sunday, November 23rd at 5pm in the school
gym, all candidates who wish to be Confirmed in
April, must attend. Also, all Confirmation Name
forms are now due to the youth ministry office.

High School Youth Ministry
Cake Wars /Cake-Eating Contest will be held
