Please forgive any typographical errors. The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed Page 3 Dear Parishioners, nd Today is All Souls’ Day. Each year on November 2 , we remember in prayer all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. These are the faithful departed, our loved ones whom we will see again in the Kingdom of Heaven. The Book of the Faithful Departed is in the vestibule. You may stop there and add the names of those among your family or friends who have died, as a way of remembering them and asking the church to pray for them. At the All Soul’s Day Masses this weekend special mention will be made, during the general intercessions, of all those who were buried from St. Edward Parish during the past year. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. *** Thanks to all who have been sending in their Step Club tickets for the coming year. The first drawing will be on Hospitality Sunday, November 16th. This is a big support to our budget. If you didn’t receive a letter in the mail, there are some tickets available at the church entrance. Thanks for your support. *** Donations to the New Organ Appeal keep coming in. The parishioners and friends of St. Edward’s are so very generous. We have already collected over $46,000.00 toward the purchase price of $72,000.00. It is very encouraging to see so many people becoming part of this important project. We ordered the new Allen Organ over two months ago. It is being fashioned in Allentown, PA. When we get closer to having a firm delivery date, we will let you know and we will be able to settle on a date for the dedication and blessing of the new organ. The dedication booklet will include the names of donors and the names of those for whom contributions were made “in honor of” or “in memory of.” Again, thanks for the generosity of so many people. *** Last Sunday Cardinal George and the bishops of the archdiocese gathered at Holy Name Cathedral with several hundred people from around the archdiocese who were recipients of the Christifideles Award. This honor is bestowed upon Catholic laypersons who have demonstrated by participation in parish life the personal and ministerial renewal called for by the Papal Exhortation/published proclamation Christifidelis Laici, calling the laity to a vocation of responsibility for the Church’s life springing from the gift and mission of their baptism. The Nyberg family – Stuart, Branka, Eric, Esther, Kristina and Martin – were recipients from St. Edward Parish. They are examples of faithful living and generously contributing their talents to the life of the Church in the parish. We congratulate them and pray that God will give them the grace to continue growing in their spiritual life and dedication to the church. *** Some events coming up: Nov. 16th is Connection Sunday. There are a number of things you can do that weekend after Mass. You can register to be a member of St. Edward Parish; sign up for electronic giving; get on the alumni mailing list; sign up to receive the monthly parish email newsletter, St. Edward Connections; get information about getting involved in some of the many ministries of the parish; get Step Club tickets for the coming year of monthly drawings. And, of course, it’s Hospitality Sunday so you can visit with fellow parishioners over coffee and….. On Saturday, November 23rd, we will have our annual Anointing of the Sick at the 5:30 pm Mass. All those who wish to receive the anointing of the sick are welcome to come. That is also the day of the Scout’s Pasta Dinner over in the gym. You can support the school by ordering Fannie May candy (need any for the holidays). The order forms are in the church vestibule. *** Thank you, Cardinal George! For 17 years Francis George has shepherded us as our bishop. We are grateful for his leadership and his dedication to the Church of Chicago. This week let us offer our prayers for the Cardinal as he prepares to retire. He has some health challenges ahead of him also and I am sure he would appreciate our thoughts and prayers. As you know Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Blase Cupich to succeed Cardinal George as Archbishop of Chicago. He will officially become our new archbishop when he is installed at Holy Name Cathedral on Tuesday, November 18th. We will keep him in our prayers as well. *** This Tuesday is Election Day in Illinois. The bishops remind us in their document “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship” that it is the moral obligation of each Catholic to participate in the political life of the country. By our baptism, Catholics are committed to following Jesus Christ and to be "salt for the earth, light for the nations." In addition to candidates for the various offices, there are a several ballot measures that relate to Catholic Social Teaching. The Illinois Birth Control in Prescription Drug Coverage Question The Illinois Minimum Wage Increase Question The Illinois Millionaire Tax Increase for Education Question The Cook County Non-Binding Referendum on the Illinois Safety Act The Office of Peace and Justice of the Archdiocese of Chicago provides information about Catholic Social Teachings that can guide Illinois voters on these issues. You can go online to www.chicagopeaceandjustice.org and look for the Faithful Citizenship reflections. God bless you, Fr. Mike November 2, 2014 The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day) Today the Church remembers all who have walked the way of Christ and passed from this life. The readings all look to the last day, when we shall all rise from the dead and be reunited. The first reading passage from Wisdom comforts us and assures us that all who live a life of virtue and justice will find life eternal. Even if they have suffered in this life, they will be comforted and consoled in the next, and no torment can touch them there. The reading from Romans urges us to recognize that, because of Christ’s paschal mystery and our entrance into that mystery through baptism, we now share in the new life won by Christ. This recognition has repercussions: living righteously now, that we might rise to life forever with Christ on the last day. In the Gospel reading, Jesus pledges that all that the Father has given him will not be lost. All the faithful will be raised to joy and kept safe forever in the presence of God. Eucharistic Adoration This Tuesday, November 4th there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, starting right after the 8:15 A.M. Mass and ending with Benediction at 7:30 P.M. The sign up chart is in the vestibule this weekend with open time slots. Please plan on making a Holy Hour. Short visits are also welcomed. Since we just celebrated the Feasts of All Saints Day and All Souls’ day come and pray to your favorite saint and for the souls of your beloved deceased. This is also Election day; so be sure to vote and before or after stop and makes visit before the Blessed Sacrament, the one who loves you the most. Servers YEAR OF SACRAMENTS ONE WORD AT A TIME OFFER Across a lifetime, we celebrate the sacrifice of the Mass many times. Every time we do so, we join ourselves to Jesus and offer ourselves to God and become one with the self sacrificing love of Jesus. The repetition of this self-offering is meant to train us. One day, at the end of our lives, as we lie dying and conclude our journey on earth, we will make our final offering to God. We will celebrate our personal liturgy of sacrifice and surrender. We will have learned from a lifetime of participation in the Eucharist how to entrust ourselves entirely, lovingly, and confidently into the hands of God. We will, with God’s help, make an offering of ourselves and worship God in spirit and in truth. We will, with Jesus prompting us, say those great words he spoke from the cross, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” November 2, 2014 Page 6 Around the Parish Daily Activities Sunday, November 2 All Souls’ Day Pro-Life Food Drive Children’s Liturgy 9:30 am Mass First Reconciliation Mass/Meeting 11:00 Mass Girls Basketball Practice 2:00 - 4:00 pm Gym Girls Basketball 6:00 - 7:00 pm Gym November 8, 2014 Ticket Order Form Monday, November 3 Basketball 4:00 - 9:00 p.m. Gym Brownie Troop 23138 6:15 - 7:30 pm SC Cub Scout Pack 3904 Mtg. 6:30 - 7:30 pm CH RCIA 7:00 - 9:00 pm RH St. Vincent de Paul Mtg. 7:30 - 9:00 pm CR Tuesday, November 4 Eucharistic Adoration 9:00 am - 7:30 pm CH Basketball 4:00 - 9:00 pm Gym Religious Ed Class 6:30 - 7:45 pm SC Theology & Cigars 8:00 - 9:30 pm RH Wednesday, November 5 Little Red Tot Spot 10:00 - 11:00 am CH Girl Scout Cadette Troop 20042 3:00 - 5:00 pm CH Basketball 4:00 - 9:00 pm Gym Children’s Choir (1st - 3rd Grade) 5:00 - 5:45 pm UC Girl Scout Troop 21326 5:30 - 7:00 pm CH Legion of Mary 7:00 - 8:30 pm CR Adult Choir 7:30 - 9:00 pm UC Name ___________________________________ Address _________________________________ Phone ___________________________________ E-mail ___________________________________ I would Like: ______ Tables(s) at $160 each (max 8 per table) Team name (optional, you can pick it the night of the event) ________________________________________ ______ Individual tickets at $20 each Please seat me with the following people: Thursday, November 6 ________________________________________ Parent/Teacher Conference - Early Dismissal 11:30 am Basketball 4:00 - 9:00 pm Gym Children’s Choir 5:00 - 6:00 pm UC Boy Scout Meeting 7:45 - 9:00 pm CH ________________________________________ No school/Faculty Inservice Marriage Encounter 7:30 - 10:00 pm CH Please make checks payable to St. Edward Church.
