Organ Appeal
We are blessed at St. Edward Church with an outstanding liturgical music program. Under the direction of
Kristen Lynch, Music Director, our choir, cantors and musicians enrich our worship. A new church
organ is a fitting addition to our music program and will complement the tremendous gifts of our music
ministers. To date we have received 59% of the cost of the new organ. Many donors have designated their
gifts in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Please consider becoming a key player by making a donation
to the Organ Appeal.
I would like to make a donation to St. Edward’s Organ Appeal:

Twenty-ninth Sunday
in Ordinary Time
Isaiah speaks to us today of Cyrus, King
of Persia, anointed by the Lord. God calls
Cyrus by name and leads him in service
to the Israelites. In this passage we hear
that it is the Lord who gives Cyrus his
title, who arms him against his enemies,
and who opens doors and unbars gates
before him. And God does all of this so
that the people will know that “I am the
Lord,” and that “there is none besides
me.”
Paul opens his letter with essentially the
same notion—that in God alone we find
our grace and peace. Paul also gives
thanks to God on our behalf, calling to
mind our work of faith, hope, and love.
And in the familiar Gospel reading, Jesus
tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what
is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.
Heads or Tails?
Heads or tails? There are two sides to
every coin, and often we utilize this fact
to decide the outcome of things. A coin
toss determines who kicks off and
receives in a football game, of course,
but there are undoubtedly other occasions
when we flip a coin—literally or
figuratively—to decide a course of
action. The implication is that while there
are two sides, only one side is important.
Heads and Tails . .
We don’t know what was on the flip side
of the coin with Caesar’s image, but it
probably didn’t say “In God We Trust.”
Jesus’ antagonists phrased their question
about the lawfulness of paying taxes to
Caesar in such a way as to prompt a
simple yes or no answer. And for Jesus,
neither of these answers would have been
good. So he foils them at their own
Page 4
game, telling the Pharisees and the
Herodians to give both Caesar and God
their due, and thus recognizing the
importance of both earthly work and
heavenly pursuits. Gotcha!
Readings for the
Week
We are all called to some earthly work
or vocation. Whether it is a vocation in
the clerical sense, the industrial or
career sense, or in the sense of being
single, married, or part of a family, it is
incumbent upon us all to give the work
its due. And as we do so, may we never
forget that just as the Lord led Cyrus by
the hand, so God leads us. In referring
to our work of faith, Paul echoes the
essence of Jesus’ response to those that
challenged him: in our earthly work,
there, also, is God. Ben Franklin once
wrote that nothing is certain but death
and taxes. Maybe that’s how Caesar
saw it, too. Yet without even flipping a
coin, we can tell that heads or tails
don’t really matter, because we know
that God is part of the mix.

World Mission
Sunday
Today the Church throughout the world
celebrates World Mission Sunday. As
we gather at Mass to worship God, this
is an occasion to especially remember
in prayer those who have given their
lives to missionary service in places far
and near. World Mission Sunday also
invites us to make concrete gestures of
solidarity and support that will assist
missionaries and the people to whom
they minister, people who are often
poor and sometimes persecuted for
their faith in Christ. This Sunday is
marked by the annual collection to help
Pope Francis fund missions around the
world.
We are called to be missionaries
through prayer, Eucharist and giving.
Please be generous.

Stewardship
September 2014
o knowing that I om St. “Render therefore to Caesar the things
that are Caesar’s and to God the things
that are God’s.” — MATTHEW 22:21
Everything we are and everything we
have belongs to God. We aren’t
“owners” of anything; we are merely
“stewards” of the gifts God has given
each of us. All God is asking is that we
give back a portion of what He gave us.
This is the essence of Stewardship. God
should be our first priority in everything.
All else comes second.

HOSPITALITY SUNDAY
The 40 Days campaign gives
ONE MORE CHANCE. One more
chance for the Mom and one last chance
for the baby. Some women take that last
chance and save the baby. Of course,
some don't. The ones who do are very
grateful for the willingness of Pro-Lifers
to be outside the clinic praying and offer
that one last chance.
Nationwide 199 babies have
been saved during the first two weeks of
the campaign. At Albany, our local clinic
seven babies have been saved and some
of the Mothers helped by the Women's
Center. Please sign up today to come and
peacefully pray by the Albany Clinic,
5086 N. Elston, this Friday, October 24th
between noon and midnight. Sign up is
in the lower Church today after all the
Masses or call Carroll at 773-4784071. You can come anytime for a half
hour or hour but please try to be there as
a public witness to the sanctity of
Life.
The campaign ends on
Sunday, November 2nd. To follow all
the news about the 40 Days for Life go to
40daysforlife.com. You will see some
amazing pictures and stories about babies
saved and prayers for each day.
Please join us after Mass for Hospitality Sunday in the lower church. Join us to
discover parish ministries and activities and pick up a copy of the parish 2014-2015
information booklet.
Soles for Jesus
We have all heard of the plight in
Africa around Ebola but did you know
that shoes can help prevent the spread
of the disease? Please join us as we do
our part during our 4th annual shoe
drive for Soles for Jesus. Shoes may be
dropped off October 15 – November 14
at St. Edward Church (4350 N.
Sunnyside), the school building (4343
W. Sunnyside) or Buckley Hall (4447

Soles for Jesus in Milwaukee and are
distributed to villages in Sub Saharan
Africa. Shoes help people stay healthy,
go to school and get jobs. Last year,
we collected 600 pairs of shoes! Please
consider donating $2 with each pair to
help with the cost of sending the shoes
to Africa. For more information, please
