All rights reserved Views “An Entrepreneur Should Never Be a Daredevil” The secret to following your dream is the opposite of what you might think By Linda Rottenberg Rodrigo Jordan: an entrepreneur on top of the world. between taking risk and removing it. And these days, everybody needs to be willing to try. Whether you work at a Fortune 500 company, a nonprofit, or a mom-andpop, everybody needs to think and act like an entrepreneur. We all need to be nimble, adaptive, daring—and maybe a little crazy—or risk being left behind. But how do you take risks without risking it all? In my experience, there are two key steps. First, you have to give yourself permission to be a contrarian. Time and again, I’ve seen people who are considering a bold move get stuck at this stage. They keep waiting for someone else to give them permission. That someone doesn’t exist. The only person who can give you permission to take risk is you. As one working mom who launched a big idea in a riskaverse company said, “In every company, no matter how traditional, there are entrepreneurial idea people. But ideas are fragile. They require knowing something is right in your gut.” Even worse, if you agitate for change, you’re going to get pushback. People are bound to call you crazy, as they did Henry Ford, Estée Lauder, and Sam Walton. So, embrace it. Become your own best booster. Say, “Crazy is a compliment!” The second step is more surprising. Once you accept a certain measure of risk, your primary task is to minimize it. The founder of Liquid Paper, Bette Graham, hatched her crazy idea while watching painters decorate Christmas windows at the bank where she was a secretary. But she worked five more years while selling her potion from her home. When Sara Blakely first started selling her derriere-flattering panty hose, Spanx, she didn’t quit her day job for two years. She later became the youngest self-made woman ever on the Forbes billionaire list. So what do smart risks look like? Eighty percent of entrepreneurs I’ve mentored said they had saved enough money to support their families for a year. Two-thirds of founders on the 2013 Inc. 500 wagered less than $10,000 on their ideas. Crowdfunding (Kickstarter, etc.) has made this process even easier. IBM launched a platform where employees could pitch projects to one another (instead of their bosses). Today taking risk is no longer a luxury. If you think your job is safe, think again. The most important step is to manage your emotions. To paraphrase golf legend Bobby Jones, entrepreneurship is a game played on a five-inch field—the distance between your ears. Linda Rottenberg has been named one of “America’s Top Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report and one of one hundred “Innovators for the 21st Century” by Time magazine. The Chilean-born entrepreneur loves extreme sports, and in 1992 became the first South American to scale Everest. Like many, Rodrigo dreamed of starting his own firm, in his case an outdoor leadership training company. But the man who takes risks in his personal life was unwilling to risk his future. So he found allies, ran a test program, and kept his teaching job until money came in. “The common wisdom is all wrong,” Rodrigo told me. “Entrepreneurs don’t like to take risks. I’m always trying to avoid and minimize them. An entrepreneur should never be a daredevil.” Maybe the trickiest question for those dreaming of starting something new is, how far to go? Convention says: Go all in. Mortgage the house. Bet the farm. McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc shared this sentiment: “If you’re not a risk taker, you should get the hell out of business.” This myth, like much business lore, appeals to a kind of macho bravado. The phrase “bet the farm” comes from poker tables in the Wild West. Boys will be boys, but entrepreneurs will be savvy. I’ve spent the past 20 years helping dreamers make their dreams come true. The reality, though, is that the majority of people creating new businesses today are more likely to be sporting (stylish) bifocals and a bit of gray at the temples than zip-front hoodies and ratty jeans. Indeed, according to the Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity, the share of U.S. entrepreneurs ages 55 to 64 grew from 14 to 23 percent between 1996 and 2012. This represents the largest gain of any age group, including 20- to 34-year-olds, whose share actually shrank from 35 to 26 percent. What’s more, these older Americans, especially those with low debt and a large social network, are 50 percent more likely to start successful businesses than their younger counterparts, even in high-tech industries. “They have what I call double-E SP,” says William Zinke, 86, president of the Center for Productive Longevity in Boulder, Colo. “They’re miles ahead of younger people when it comes to Experience, Expertise, Seasoned Judgment and Proven Performance.” Here, five experienced—and tremendously enterprising—souls share their invaluable wisdom for turning gray into green. 8 | NOVEMBER 2, 2014 © PARADE Publications 2014. The statistics are sobering: According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 29 million Americans have diabetes, and about 86 million have higher-than-normal blood glucose levels that could become Type 2 diabetes. But while diabetes is a serious condition that can cause health complications such as heart disease and blindness, the news isn’t all bad. Today, people with diabetes have more power to control their condition than ever before. If you’re at risk for diabetes, healthy lifestyle choices can delay or prevent a diagnosis. If you already have it, there are many management strategies that can help you live a long, healthy life and minimize your chance of developing complications. Read on to find out the latest ways to lower your diabetes risk, and manage your blood sugar to regain control of your health. EAT THE MEDITERRANEAN WAY. By Maureen Sangiorgio “The most recent research shows that the best diet for lowering your risk of diabetes, and for better glucose control if you have diabetes, is a Mediterranean diet,” says Marjorie Cypress, Ph.D., the American Diabetes Association’s president of health care and education. “Move toward a diet rich in seafood, whole grains, vegetables, fruit and nuts.” What to move away from: red meat, which contains more saturated fat than seafood. “Cutting back on red meat is good advice for everyone, but this is especially important for people with diabetes because they are at a higher risk of heart disease and stroke.” © PARADE Publications 2014. On one of the halves, draw a horizontal line to cut one side in half, dividing the plate into three parts. Fill the largest section with non-starchy veggies such as spinach, broccoli or carrots. In one of the small sections, put your protein such as seafood, chicken or turkey. In the other small section, place starchy foods such as whole grain bread or beans. WALK AWAY FROM DIABETES IN 10 MINUTES. The best fitness regimen for diabetes is a combination of walking and strength training. “Aim for 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise every day,” says Cypress. (Moderate means you have the capacity to talk to someone while exercising, but not sing.) When you exercise, your muscles pull glucose out of the bloodstream for energy. So the more you move, the lower your glucose levels. Exercising also helps blood circulation, which is critical for people with diabetes, who have a higher risk of foot issues due to peripheral vascular disease. And guess what? You don’t have to work out 30 minutes all at once. “You can enjoy all the health benefits of exercising if you break up those 30 minutes to fit in to your busy schedule,” notes Cypress. Squeeze in 15 minutes of aerobics in the morning, then take a 15-minute walk on your lunch break. In an Archives of Internal Medicine study, researchers noted that being depressed could actually raise one’s risk of diabetes. If you’ve been feeling blue lately, check for these symptoms of depression: loss of pleasure and/or energy, change in sleep patterns and/or appetite, trouble concentrating, anxiety, guilt, morning sadness and suicidal thoughts. If you have three or more of these symptoms, or if you have just one or two but have been feeling depressed for two weeks or more, it’s time to get help. DIABETES, DEFINED Diabetes is the condition in which the body does not properly turn the food we eat into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body is either not making enough insulin to feed your cells (Type 1), or the cells are resisting the insulin (Type 2). Soon after, so did their marriage. Depressed, divorced, and over $1 million in debt, she was living on four credit cards. “My attorney said ‘Sweetheart, you either need a therapist or a dog,’” she recalls. So she adopted a 4-month-old English bulldog named Zelda. A few weeks later, Gardner, now 68, who could barely afford to feed Zelda, dressed her up in a Santa hat and a bubble beard, snapped her photo, and entered it in a local pet store’s Christmas card contest. (Prize: one year’s worth of free dog food.) When she won, the proverbial light bulb came on. Gardner got busy sewing costumes for Zelda, shooting photos and writing captions, ultimately creating a starter line of 24 funny, inspirational greeting cards and posters. A local printer ran 25,000 cards on credit, and Gardner began pitching stores in Oregon and Washington. “ “ NOVEMBER 2, 2014 | 9 © PARADE Publications 2014. A designer of media rooms, estate lighting, and other home technology systems, Britton, 52, started researching the senior home care field, finding products ranging from GPS-enabled watches and pendants to track the location of loved ones to a device that automatically turns off the stove. There were even electronic pillboxes capable of sending emails or text messages when Mom or Dad forget to take their meds. In 2011, at age 50, Britton launched TellaBoomer TeleCare Services, a company that assesses the needs of residents and their remote caregivers, then designs and installs a home security system for seniors. “My goal,” he says, “is to help more seniors age in place by transitioning their home-sweet-homes into home-smart-homes.” Business has been steady but not spectacular—Britton has been searching for funding—and this entrepreneur admits his age has been somewhat of a hindrance. “Angel investors are used to pumping money into 20-somethings in Silicon Valley and other high-tech sectors. But here I am on the East Coast in Mt. Kisco dealing with 80-somethings. But they’ll eventually come around. There are just too many 50-plus entrepreneurs to ignore.” long-Haul truCk Driver W hile watching his granddaughters’ soccer scrimmage, Jeffrey Nash, 60, spotted a mom helping her baby learn to walk. The father of three and grandfather of five had done this many times himself, but never noticed how awkward it was: the mom bending over and the child stumbling along. Hence the inspiration for the Juppy Baby Walker, an infant harness with straps that can be held by Mom and Dad. Right away, he sketched a design and asked a tailor at the clothing store where he worked as a salesman to make a prototype. Using customers’ kids to test it, he perfected the design, had a few hundred made, took time off from work, and began selling them out of his trunk. Nash, who was then 56 and divorced, quit his job of 15 years, cashed out his 401(k), sold his house at a loss, borrowed money from family and friends, secured a patent, created a website, and ordered 1,000 Juppys. “I had never done anything like this before,” he says. “But this was 2009, during the height of the recession. Companies were either laying off workers or hiring younger, lessexpensive replacements, so I knew I had to do something.” So far, Nash estimates he’s sold 35,000 Juppys worldwide through his website and wholesaler network. He’s approaching $1 million in total revenue. “To work for a corporation is to be at its mercy,” he says. “When viewed that way, it’s really not a huge risk to start a business.” Jeffrey nash Las Vegas, NeV. Despite its rugged veneer, this job is increasingly popular among 50-plus couples looking to see the country. (Instead of purchasing an RV, they buy or lease a truck.) Some people are calling it a “miracle pill.” However, this “miracle pill” is backed by serious clinical research published in the highly respected British Journal of Nutrition. The Power to Reshape Your Entire Body While you and I only care about results (and the results are incredible), the scientists I’ve spoken to are even more excited about how this compound works. So here we go. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, study subjects took the compound along with their main meal of the day. Thirty minutes later, they had a significantly lower percentage of blood glucose increment from baseline, a smaller increase in C-peptide and, forty-five to one hundred twenty minutes after they ate, subjects also experienced a smaller insulin increase compared the day with a smile on your face (another added benefit). This unique formula has been exclusively licensed to Bremenn Clinical under the trade name Vysera -CLS. And trust me on this... once you start taking it and see how quickly it transforms your entire body, you’ll be a believer, too. ® So What’s The Catch? significant reduction in body weight, fat mass, BMI, adipose tissue thickness, and waist/hip/thigh circumference while maintaining lean body mass. So Here It Is In Plain English: People who took this incredible compound not only lost weight, but lost a significant amount of squishy, flabby, unattractive body fat from those hard-to-target places we all hate: our hips, thighs and butt. It also caused a significant reduction in the amount of fat around the waist (yes, that means you can start saying goodbye to your love handles), helping study subjects achieve that tight, sexy, firm figure we all dream of. And the best part? The compound did all this on 2,000 to 2,200 calories a day! In other words, without requiring anybody to follow a low-calorie diet or work out for hours every day! Think of it this way... it’s sort of like eating a whole donut, but only absorbing a fraction of the calories. How’s that for amazing? (Of course, we don’t advocate eating a donut as a meal, and this example is used for illustrative purposes only.) It seems there’s always a catch with “diet” pills... so what’s the catch with Vysera? The price. A full 30-day supply of Vysera will cost you about $100... in other words, don’t go looking for it at your local Walmart. When a friend recommended La Cocina, a Bay-area nonprofit “kitchen incubator” (one of 150 nationwide) that helps immigrant women start food-related businesses, she was on her way. With the nonprofit’s help, Guerrero drafted a mission statement, perfected traditional recipes, designed a website, and obtained a license for her company, El Pipila, named for a Mexican war hero. After a busy year of preparations, Guerrero launched El Pipila at the San Francisco Street Food Festival in August 2012. Tens of thousands attended the event, and her stall was packed. “My vision is to be the best authentic, regional Mexican food provider in the Bay area,” she says. “I am happy because for the first time in my life, I am working for myself.” Kennections By Ken Jennings HOW TO PLAY All five correct answers have something in common.
