A view from A New Member—James "Doogie" Kautz
After Drummond’s impassioned plea for chorus members to sign up to attend the Rochester
show, I decided to cash in some of my accrued brownie points. I asked my wife if I could
leave her with our six children for the weekend so I could make the trip. She reluctantly
agreed (but now the brownie bank is empty), and before I knew it I was in Headingley
boarding a bus in the black night of 6AM on October 24th.
I can’t fully capture my reaction to the weekend, but I can say this: I was blown away. I
think I set a new world record for goosebumps experienced per second. I melted in my seat
when I heard the soft chords some of those quartets wafted my way; I learned how not all
harmonics have to make the windows rattle to get the point across. My eyes teared up on
several occasions from the sheer beauty of the music and from witnessing the performers’
loving devotion to the perfection of their art. And I know that these groups weren’t the best
of the best… one day I’ll have to go to Internationals to get the full sensation.
And then standing on the stage to compete with the chorus - what a feeling! As a Toastmaster, I’ve learned a lot about how to control stage nervousness and I’m grateful that my
knees weren’t shaking. That allowed me to plunge fully into the moment, to sing with all my
being, and to help our chorus put our best foot forward. I’m so thrilled to have been a part
of our performance, and I want to thank Gary for his directorship, as well as all my fellow
baritones (and I guess a few of you other guys) who have helped me learn the ropes these
past few months.
When I joined the Chordsmen, it was chiefly to help quench my aching thirst for good music
& sweet harmony. Several of you told me in advance that there would be polecats and tags
freely exchanged in any available hallway or corner, and by golly you were right! I eagerly
jumped in and introduced myself to strangers, asking them to teach me some tags or to
sing the praises of beautiful things like Irish roses, mill streams, or a sad girl called Nellie.
But time is a cruel mistress, and the weekend was too full of events. I couldn’t get enough
of it. I WANT MORE.
Be warned: you’ve created a monster.

Some of the best barbershop quartets in the Midwest will be harmonizing in Rochester this
weekend.
The Barbershop Harmony Society's 2014 Fall Land O' Lakes District Convention and Contest
kicked off Friday with choral acts from across north central U.S. and parts of Canada. The top 10
acts from Friday night's preliminaries will compete in the final at 6 p.m. today at the Mayo Civic
Center Auditorium. The competition is open to the public.
Convention chairman Del Ryberg said acts travel from as far east as Appleton, Wis., to as far
west as Saskatchewan in Canada.
"For all of the choruses in all of these towns, this is the culmination of their year," Ryberg said.
"All of them had to qualify in a previous contest last spring."
One of the Canadian acts, Vocal Point, from Winnipeg, is competing in its first district
competition. The quartet drove nine hours to Rochester.
Art Gross, of Vocal Point, has been part of different choruses for 20 years.
"Once you sing it and your quartet comes together and it starts to ring, you're
hooked," said Gross. "Then, the drive is to get better, and this competition is one way
to test how you're doing."
Kordal Kombat won the competition last year and, by rule, can't compete this year. The four
men from Minnesota-Morris were on hand this weekend to "mic-check" and to hand out trophies. Kordal Kombat also has placed 16th and eighth in collegiate barbershop competitions the
past two years.
Locally, the four members of Gambit, wearing orange and black pinstripe suits, hope a local act
wins it all. Even if they don't win, they still can take in some high-level choral music. Well, at
least half of the group can.
