July
Renovation Initiative
One of only seven carillons in New York
State, the Hopeman Carillon has played a
significant role in the life of the University
of Rochester for the past four decades.
Housed in the iconic landmark building,
Rush Rhees Library, the carillon plays
traditionally for Meliora Weekend and
Commencement each year as well as offers
professional concerts in July and studentperformed concerts and informal play
throughout the school year.
of overtones and, most importantly, will
enable the carillon to be played year round,
including at temperatures below 32 degrees
Fahrenheit, which is currently not possible.
After 40 years of use, this all-weather
exterior instrument is in need of some
maintenance and renovation. Rick Watson
of Meeks, Watson, and Company has
identified rusted bolts, cracked leather
attachments, bells that rotate in place, and
springs that no longer adjust as priority
repairs to be tackled. Secondary needs
include replacement umbrellas, adjusting
turnbuckles and replacement clappers. The
more than 40-foot-long wires need
additional tracking so they do not cross
during play or heavy winds.
These improvements will increase dynamic
control, enrich the sound of the bells’ array
Double Your Impact
We are excited to announce
a new matching challenge!
A full renovation of the
carillon, as detailed above,
will cost approximately
$130,000 and your gifts will
help us reach that goal.
Recognizing the
significance of the carillon
in their own lives, an
alumnus and his wife are
offering a dollar for dollar
match up to $50,000 toward
the renovation project with
the hope that other alumni,
members of the Rochester
community, and Carillon
Society participants will join
them in keeping the bells
ringing. Double your
impact by supporting the
carillon today!
