THE BIG PRAM WALK “Just speak up” Last year Women’s Health Resource Centre held Geraldton’s first “Big Pram Walk” during Post natal Depression Week. Due to the success of this first one and the importance on getting awareness out into the community around perinatal depression and anxiety, we have organised another event for the 20th November 2014. The group meets weekly and there is a set program which runs to coincide with each school term. We offer informative sessions about selfesteem, goal setting, values and healthy thinking alongside creative activities and pampering sessions. Women who notify us within 24 hours of the appointment will not be charged. The new fee applies for GP service, counselling and all nurse appointments. Clients will not be able to rebook until this fee is paid. 4th December Self esteem for mums Part 2 11th December Good enough parenting (not perfect parenting) 18th December Christmas outing All women $10 It is unfortunate that we have had to implement this fee but our professional services are not being respected by some clients and this is basically wasting our vital funds as we cannot fill the appointments at short notice. We strive hard to seek and obtain funds for all our services and hope that our clients understand this and respect the services we offer. Appointments are available from 9:10am until 1:50pm and are for women only and for women’s health issues. This is a bulk-billing clinic. Please phone 9964 2742 to book an appointment and please bring your Medicare card. We are unable to see clients who do not produce their Medicare card. SEXUAL HEALTH NURSES The Sexual Health Nurses now work to an appointment system in the clinical program. This program is available on Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 9am to 2pm. Clinical appointments can be made with the Sexual Health Nurses for Pap smears, STI checks, pregnancy tests, breast checks, continence advice, contraception advice and sexual health information. Unplanned pregnancy counselling appointments are also offered to women through this service. As healthy eating begins with breakfast we have decided to hold a healthy breakfast/brunch to celebrate World Diabetes Day. We would like to highlight the importance of eating healthy to help prevent type 2 diabetes and avoid the serious complications of diabetes. Women are invited to join us for a Go Blue for Breakfast/Brunch at Women’s Health Resource Centre, 28 Sanford Street, Geraldton starting at 9am. We will be preparing a healthy breakfast/brunch with Catherine Dumont, Dietitian. Following this Catherine will be doing a talk on diabetes prevention and will have diabetes information available for women. Please wear blue, the colour of the blue circle— global symbol for diabetes awareness. Diabetes is serious and there are 280 new cases in Australia every day. Diabetes threatens to overwhelm the healthcare system. About 1.1 million Australians currently know they have diabetes and live with it every day. Hundreds of thousands of Australians have silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Over 2 million Australians have pre-diabetes and are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Bookings are essential as we need numbers for catering. Too many people are unaware of the harmful effects of violence in our community. Most people relate to family violence in a physical way, through punching, slapping, and kicking, shoving or sexual abuse.
