Natasha Obzera
By Bev Mantel
Past
Natasha Therese Obzera came
into this world on July 19, 1988
weighing in at only 4lbs, 13oz!
She arrived 8 weeks ahead of
schedule, so she was born in
Vancouver instead of Terrace.
After a few days in Vancouver,
Natasha’s parents, Tim and Jean
Obzera, got the go ahead to bring
her home to Terrace, but there
was no Medevac airplane
available anywhere in BC. That
turned out to be a “God thing” because, while they waited for
transportation, Natasha came down with Meningitis. Children’s
Hospital in Vancouver was the best place for newborn Natasha to be.
Meningitis was hard on her and her body weight dropped to 3 lbs!
As time went on, Natasha was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. She had
thirteen major operations by the time she was 14 years old. Because
of this, one of her favorite quotes is:
“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the
hand.” Randy Pausch
One of Natasha’s personal highlights was the opportunity to swim
with dolphins in Hawaii at the age of 14. And she was blessed in being
able to return to Hawaii when she was 20.
Natasha’s schooling includes none other than…. Centennial Christian
School! She spent 13 great years here at Centennial and went on to
get an associate degree in Criminology at Northwest Community
College. She then decided to head ‘down south’ to Trinity Western
University and received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with honors.
Present
Natasha is Centennial’s new, part-time, Grade 2/3 teacher’s assistant.
Centennial Christian School feels like home for Natasha, so she is very
happy to be working here. As she looks around the school she sees
evidence of former years here. From her tiny hand print painted on
the wall at one end of the school to her graduation photo at the other
end. When Natasha is not working, some of her hobbies are board
games, puzzles, playing the piano, reading, writing, and coloring with
Sharpies.
Future
Natasha is engaged! Ben Wilkins and Natasha are planning to tie the knot on July 18, 2015. Ben currently lives in
Prince George (they met on-line) and is planning to move to Terrace before the summer. Ben is a journeyman
carpenter and hopes to start a business here.
Centennial Christian School has been a big part of Natasha’s past and present, and I have a feeling it will be in
the future too. May God continue to bless you Natasha!
Natasha’s favorite Bible verses:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and
he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3 5-6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you
wherever you go. Joshua 1:6
