The day focuses on Pitch side sports medicine; Concussion and head injuries in Sport and is open to all SEM and healthcare professionals. The Pitch side session will be chaired by Dr Ian Beasley, the Concussion and head injuries session by Dr Gary O'Driscoll. 6 FSEM CPD accreditation points have been awarded for the day. The legal issues affecting rugby neuro trauma. Outlining the duty of care of clinicians, sports governing bodies etc. 2. The case law relating to particular aspects of safety of the sport and who could be a potential defendant: club doctors, physios, and related staff. 3. Examples of how these cases will be approached by courts in practice, including how the duty of care can be discharged in the case of rugby by the measures in place to protect players. 4. Case law on football neuro-injuries and their latest developments and parallels with rugby. 5. Causation of injury and whether the head injury can be proved to be related to any breach of duty of care in particular cases. Will these cases ever succeed on causation of injury? Meeting Organiser: Professor Nicola Maffulli MD MS PhD FRCS (Orth) FRCP FFSEM is Professor of Musculoskeletal Surgery, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, University of Salerno, Italy and Professor of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mile End Hospital. His main clinical interests lie in the management of lower limb sports injuries and in paediatric musculoskeletal sports medicine. Special interests include Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Patellar and Achilles tendons. His main research interests are the histology and biology of overuse tendon injuries and the effects of intensive training in young and older athletes. A florid research programme is under way with international collaborators, focusing on orthopaedic genetics, outcome measures and randomized controlled trials in trauma and orthopaedics, and tissue engineering of tendons. Professor Maffulli has recently been awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians. Meeting Chairs: Dr Ian Beasley MBBS MRCGP MSc Dip Sports Med FFSEM(UK) - Ian is a Sports Physician with clinical interests in Groin injuries, Troublesome muscle tears, Tendon problems and Management of all injuries in dancers. He has worked in professional football for 25 years, is now Head of Medical Services to the FA, and Team Doctor to the England Men's Team. Dr Beasley went with the team to the World Cup 2010 and the European Championships in 2012. He was Governing Body Medical officer for Hockey from 1992-2002, and attended two Olympics, Two World Cups and a Commonwealth Games. Dr Beasley is also Medical advisor to The Royal Ballet Company, London, and see dancers of all levels at the company. Dr Gary O'Driscoll MBBS BSc (Hons) Dip SEM FFSEM is now in his sixth full season at Emirates Stadium as the Medic al Director to Arsenal Football Club and has overseen major developments in the medical department since joining the Club. Gary qualified in 1997 having previously completed a degree in Pharmacology and has worked as a sports physician in a series of full and part time roles since. Initially Ireland U21 Rugby Union Doctor for three 6 Nations tournaments & three World Cups he was appointed Doctor to the Ireland senior squad in 2002 covering more than 70 Internationals with a squad that won 3 Triple Crowns a Championship and a Grand Slam. He was one of the Drs on the British & Irish Lions tours to New Zealand in 2005 and South Africa in 2009 and also worked with Saracens Rugby Union and Melbourne Storm rugby league. In December 2008 he was appointed Medical Director to Arsenal Football Club, a position he still holds. Gary is the Chairman of the Premier League Drs Group and was a member of the Medical Steering Group to the 2012 London Olympics. Gary is an instructor in the ATLS& SCRUMCAPS Emergency Medicine courses and also involved in research in a variety of areas and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine of Ireland. Meeting Speakers: Dr Philip Batty MB ChB MRCGP DRCOG PG Dip (SEM) FFSEM (UK) is on the GP Register and Specialist Register for Sports and Exercise Medicine. Dr Philip Batty has been involved in elite sports medicine for 17 years. He worked as the deputy club doctor at Manchester United between 1996 and 1999 before joining Blackburn Rovers Football Club as Head of Sports Medicine. He combined this role with positions at the English Institute of Sport and Sedbergh School. He became head of Sports Medicine at Manchester City Football Club in 2011-2012 before taking on his current role as Senior Team Doctor for the England Rugby Team. Dr Batty has served as the Training Programme Director in Sports and Exercise Medicine for the North West and also on the Speciality Advisory Committee. He is a member of Council of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine and also holds the following positions: Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Salford; Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College, London; Honorary Consultant at Wrightington Hospital; Sports and Exercise Medicine Consultant at Isokinetic Medical Group; Member of Examinations Committee and Examiner for the Diploma in Sport and Exercise Medicine, Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine; Appraiser in Sports and Exercise Medicine, Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine; His clinical interests are paediatric sports injuries, injection therapy and diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging. Mr Tony Belli MD FRCS is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Mr Belli's research interest is in neurobiochemistry and neuromonitoring of acute brain injury. Working with cerebral microdialysis, he has focused on early markers of tissue damage and on the prevention of secondary injury after trauma and subarachnoid haemorrhage. Mr Belli is the principal or chief investigator of several acute brain injury studies. He graduated from Tor Vergata University in Rome in 1992 with a degree in Medicine and Surgery. He completed a doctoral degree (MD) on neurobiochemistry of brain ischaemia and reperfusion at Tor Vergata University and then moved to the UK in 1994. He trained as a neurosurgeon at Kings College Hospital, Atkinson Morley's Hospital, The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital. Mr Belli is on the editorial board several neurology journals and is an advisor to NICE and the Care Quality Commission - bio tbc Mr Brian E Carlin Dip IMC RCSEd - Brian is currently the clinical lead for the Football Association (FA) Advanced Resuscitation & Emergency Aid (AREA) course programme. He is a Senior Medical Educator for the International Rugby Board (IRB) worldwide; with a responsibility for raising the standards of pitch side care in all union playing countries. Brian has a keen interest in medical education especially in the areas of assessment and promoting academic integration within pre-hospital care and medical aspects of sports. He was part of the curriculum development group for the sub-specialty in pre-hospital care in UK, amongst a number of academic programmes he has been involved with. These include being the author and Course Director of the RCSI FSEM Standard Principles of Resuscitation & Trauma in Sports (SPoRTS) and the ICGP Immediate Medical & Emergency Care (IMEC) Courses. Brian is a Senior Examiner for the Faculty of pre-hospital care at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) and is the FPHC advisor for the DIMC/FIMC exams in Immediate Medical Care for all Ireland (Southern & Northern Ireland). He played both football and Rugby before injury and now is a keen Marathon and Ultra-marathon runner. Recently acted as one of the Field of Play Medical Leads for the Commonwealth Games 2014 Track & Field events in Glasgow Dr Charlotte Cowie MBBS DipSportMed DM-SMed FFSEM(UK) is Clinical Director for Perform at St. George's Park. Charlotte Cowie undertook her initial training in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the Royal London Hospital (now QMUL) in 1993 and since then has worked both part time and full time within elite and professional sport. She added an osteopathic degree to her training and has continued to take a particular interest in musculo-skeletal medicine, working at the Bupa Musculo-skeletal centre of excellence in London for many years. She has worked mainly in professional football, having worked initially as the MO at Millwall FC and for the England Women's Football Squad, subsequently working as Head of Medicine and Sports Science at Fulham FC and then as Head of Medical Services at Tottenham Hotspur FC. She has also worked as a Medical Officer for TeamGB at 3 Olympics and in the 2012 Olympics was also present in the role of NGB doctor to British Taekwondo. She is currently the clinical director at Perform at St George's Park, the medical facility for the National Football Centre in Burton upon Trent. Mr Mike Healy, FA Head of Medical Education - Mike has been with The FA for 12 years where he worked as Head of Medical Services to England Development Teams (U16-U20s) for five years before becoming Head of Medical Education in 2010. As Head of Medical Education, Mike has the responsibility for the delivery of a high quality medical education programme for the whole game that is appropriately resourced and delivered by tutors with strong FA Learning values. Mr Gary Lewin MSc GradDipPhys MCSP SRP is Head of Physiotherapy Services to the FA and physiotherapist to the England Senior Mens Team. Born in 1964 in East Ham, London. On leaving school in 1980 became an apprentice professional footballer at Arsenal Football Club. Unfortunately was released in 1982 and undertook the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy course at Guy's Hospital of Physiotherapy, qualifying in June 1986. During this training, worked at Arsenal Football Club on a parttime basis working with the youth and reserve teams. Once qualified worked at Guy's Hospital as a Junior Physiotherapist before being offered the First Team Physiotherapist job at Arsenal Football Club in September 1986. Worked at Arsenal Football Club for twenty-two years before leaving on 31st July 2008. In 1996 was appointed to the England Senior Men's football team, working part-time. Went to three FIFA World Cup Finals in 1998 (France), 2002 Japan NAD Korea) and 2006 (Germany) and two UEFA European Championship Finals in 2000 (Holland and Belgium) and 2004 (Portugal). Finally was appointed Head of Physiotherapy Services to the FA and Physiotherapist to the England Senior Men's team on 1st August 2008. Went to the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals (South Africa), the 2011 FIFA Under 20 World Cup Finals (Colombia), the 2013 FIFA Under 20 World Cup Finals, the Euro 2012 Championships in Poland and Ukraine, was part of Team GB for the 2012 Olympics working with the Team GB Football Team and went to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Finals (Brazil). Appointed to the Operations advisory panel to the building of St. George's Park in August 2010. Saint George's Park successfully opened in October 2012. Trustee to Brain and Spine Foundation Charity, Ambassador to the Willow Foundation Charity and Trustee to Rainbow Nation Charity. Mr Tim Meakin is a practising Barrister at 7 Bedford Row, where he specialises in sports law, professional negligence, and serious personal injury law. His areas of practice include; Disciplinary, Child Safe-guarding and Regulatory Sports Law, providing advice and representation in disciplinary proceedings in Courts, Arbitrations and Tribunals in the UK as diverse as the FA, British Canoe Union, and British Gymnastics. He is also on the UK Anti-Doping list of advocates representing sports personnel in doping proceedings, including the recent Commonwealth Games. Sports Related Personal Injury; Tim advises and represents clients on sports related injuries, including both individual sports personnel and major sporting organisations (UK Athletics, the British Cycling Federation, Premiership/Championship Footballers, and the RFL). In addition, he has extensive experience in Sports Related Professional Negligence Law, representing individuals and defence organisations on cases involving injury consequent on clinical and related negligence from doctors, coaches, and/or physiotherapists, leading to financial loss and damage. Tim is a member of the British Association for Sport and Law and writes and lectures on sports law issues. Dr Ritan Mehta MBBS BSc MRCGP MSc (SEM) MFSEM is currently the Medical Officer for England Women's Football at the FA and Team Doctor to the Senior England Women's football team. He has previously worked with a variety of teams within the FA and was the lead medical officer for England at the FIFA U20 Men's World Cup 2011 in Colombia. Ritan Mehta initially trained as a General Practitioner and pursued his interest in Sport and Exercise Medicine by completing an MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) at QMUL in 2009, passing with distinction and awarded the DJO John King Prize for his research on 'Post-exercise cardiac troponin release is related to exercise training history'. He has now returned to QMUL as a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in SEM after undertaking higher specialist training in SEM in London. Ritan has worked in a variety of sports throughout his career and was honoured to have worked at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in athletics at the Olympic stadium. His main area of interest however is football medicine. He is currently the team doctor at Watford Football Club and has lectured on football medicine at both national and international conferences. Dr Shabaaz Mughal MBBS MRCGP MSc(SEM) FFSEM(UK) CESR - Dr Mughal is currently the full time Club Doctor at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and the President Elect of the Sport and Exercise Medicine Section at the Royal Society of Medicine. He received international recognition and acclaim for performing the on field Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation of Fabrice Muamba, the football player from the opposition team Bolton Wanderers FC, who collapsed due to cardiac arrest during an FA Cup match in March 2012. Shabaaz has previously been Club Doctor at Leyton Orient FC. He has also worked in various other sports including Athletics, Basketball, Boxing and Cricket. Shabaaz is a Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) having completed the London Deanery Higher Specialist Training Programme and holds dual specialisation in both SEM and General Practice. He completed his MSc in SEM at St Barts and the Royal London, QMUL in 2006. He has presented internationally on behalf of the Football Association (FA) at the Confederation of African Football Medical Congress as well as lecturing on various MSc courses and SEM seminars in London. He has written a chapter on Head Injuries and Concussion Management in the 'Emergencies in Sports Medicine' Handbook and is involved in ongoing research in SEM. Shabaaz is also a representative on the FA/Premier League Medical Working Group on Head Injuries and Concussion. Mr Brendan Roche MA (Oxon) is a practising barrister at the Chambers of Simeon Maskrey QC at 7 Bedford Row, where he specialises in professional and clinical negligence, personal injury, child protection and sports law. He is regularly instructed in complex or difficult medical litigation including cases of alleged baby-shaking, fabricated illness and disputes over appropriate treatment. He has argued the boundaries of the tortious duty of care before the highest courts in England and Wales. He regularly advises on high value personal injury and neuro-trauma cases. Brendan is a member of the British Association for Sport and Law and writes and lectures on sports law issues. He also sits as a Recorder. Dr Andy Smith BSc(Hons) MB ChB MRCS(Eng) FCEM FIMC RCSED FFSEM(UK) MSc SEM is an Emergency Medicine Consultant at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Yorkshire Ambulance Service BASICS doctor, Faculty of Pre Hospital Care RCSED Training & Standards Board Vice Chair, Senior Lecturer at Leeds Medical School, visiting Lecturer at Salford, Hull, Bolton, St. Mary's and Middlesex University's. In sport Andy is the Yorkshire RFU & England Counties Doctor, Twickenham Match Day Player & Officials Clinical Lead, RFU Immediate Care in Sport Programme Director, IRB Immediate Care in Rugby Technical Director and Clinical Governance Advisor to Premiership Rugby. Andy worked at both the Olympics and Commonwealth Games as a Field of Play Team Leader for the athletics. Dr Mike Turner MBBS MD FFSEM is Chief Medical Adviser (CMA) to the Lawn Tennis Association, a post he has held since 1994. He retired as CMA to the British Horseracing Authority on 31st December 2013 after 21 years in office and was formerly Medical Adviser to the British Ski Federation and a member of the Medical Committee of FIS (International Ski Federation). He was Director of Medical Services at the British Olympic Association and Team GB Medical Officer at Calgary, Albertville and Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games. He is on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Sports Medicine and his particular areas of interest are safety in high risk sports, protective equipment in sport, child protection, concussion and doping control.
