party’s hold on the body.
In the Sixth Congressional District, former Gov.
Edwin Edwards (D) will
face Gov. Bobby Jindal’s
former coastal zone director, Garret Graves, the
Republican. Edwards and
Graves eliminated nine
other candidates in the
Nov. 4 primary. Fifth
place finisher Lenar Whitney (R) endorsed Graves
Wednesday. It is unclear
if candidates Paul Dietzel
(R) and Dan Claitor (R)
will make an endorsement.

In District 1 - Two incumbent board members
will face off — Jerry
Arbour (R) and Evelyn
Jackson-Ware (D), who is
backed by BRAC.
In District 6, Republican Mark Bellue (R) who
is supported by BRAC, is
in the runoff with Jennifer
Andrews (D).
In District 8, Republican
incumbent Connie Bernard is opposed by Chris
Bailey (R), who is supported by BRAC.
The East Baton Rouge
Republican Party is supported Arbour and Bernard.

The Republican tidal wave of
victories arrived all at once Tuesday night around 10 p.m. By 10:30
p.m., the liberal media was already
playing down the victories and cautioning that the Republicans must
“work with” President Obama.
That’s amazing, because Obama
hasn’t worked with anyone — Republican or Democrat — since he
was elected. For Obama, it’s “My
way or the highway,” which is in
part responsible
for the remarkable failure of his
presidency.

about “compromise” with the
President. What?

— was elected to stop and undo
what Obama is doing — not pander
to his idiosyncrasies.
On Wednesday, Obama said very
clearly: I have heard the voters, and
I don’t plan to change course! One
headline read, “Obama Defiant Despite Humiliation”!
With a net gain of eight new
senators and Louisiana still out, Republicans in the Senate will have
a working majority. Republicans
in the House will have a huge majority. This is not the time to play
piddy-pat with Obama.
January will be the time to move
forward on many fronts. It is essential that Congress use the power of the purse to enforce its will.
That means restricting how Obama
uses the taxpayer’s money. While
Obama can veto regular legislation,
his ability to veto appropriations has
limits, and that is the vulnerability
that Republicans must exploit.
Perhaps the biggest winner Tuesday was the right to life. Eight prolife Republicans defeated eight proabortion Democrats in the Senate.
The Senate will be far more prolife than in the past. In addition, the
Right to Keep and Bear Arms won
victory after victory, as pro-gun
Senate candidates and gubernatorial
candidates defeated Democrats who
favor gun control.
It is an historic time. Now we
will see if Republicans will move
forward expeditiously with pro-free
enterprise, fiscally conservative
polcies. They must rein in Obama
on a host of critical issues, starting
with illegal immigration.

Senate Race in Louisiana. Republican Congressman Bill Cassidy
made a good showing, as did conservative Republican Col. Rob Maness, who won more than 200,000
votes. Incumbent Democrat Mary
Landrieu will fight, and her hope is
to turn out her base, while Republicans slumber, secure in the knowledge that she can’t win. The reality
is she can win, if Republicans don’t
do their job. Congressman Cassidy
must reach out aggressively to bring
into the fold Col. Maness and the
conservative base which supported
him. That means taking a strong
conservative stand on the issues and
communicating those policies to the
electorate.

Sixth District Race. In the Sixth
District, Garret Graves too must
reach out to conservatives. He
polled 27 percent but must appeal
to those who voted for Paul Dietzel,
Dan Claitor, Lenar Whitney, Craig
McCulloch and the other Republicans. That means healing the differences and bringing people together.

Central Fire Dept. Proposes 4.25-Mill Tax Hike
Tax Would Provide
Funds to Eliminate
One-Man Stations
Editor’s Note: The Central Fire Department provided the following information to explain its proposed 4.25mill property tax increase on the Dec.
6, 2014, ballot.
CENTRAL — The Central Fire
Department was established in 1972
and currently operates from five fire
stations. These stations cover over
60 square miles, respond to 2,500
calls for service per year, protecting
35,000 people and 10,800 homes
and businesses, with a value over
1.5 billion dollars. Fire stations are
staffed by a total of eight firefighters on duty during each 24-hour
shift.
Three of the stations have two
firefighters on duty and two of the
stations each have one fire fighter
on duty. The current staffing level
for the Central Fire Department is
drastically below the national standard of four firefighters per engine
company.
For most of its history, Central
has depended heavily on volunteer
staffing. Unfortunately, as times
change, more demands are placed
on those who would normally volunteer. Additionally, the national
fire service has placed more stringent training requirements, which
has led to a shortage of volunteer
firefighters.
Highlighting this problem, the
Central Fire Department has conducted four volunteer academies
over a ten year period, with a net
gain of two firefighters to the department. Following national trends,
the Central Fire Department now
depends more on full-time staffing
than volunteers.
Having exhausted all available
options to increase staffing, the
Central Fire Department is proposing a 4.25 millage increase for the

allow Central Fire Department to
increase its staffing to minimum
levels and eliminate single staffed
stations.
The Central Fire Department is proposing to increase staffing at each station.
While having two firefighters on
each engine company is well below
the acceptable staffing per national
standards, having two firefighters
would greatly increase the safety
factor for the firefighters as well as
the public. Firefighting is a labor
intensive, hazardous profession and
having trained, well-equipped personnel on scene creates a safer environment for citizens and for fire
fighters.
The additional staffing goes
well beyond fighting fires and has
dramatic effects on all requests for
assistance from the public. For
instance, a routine medical call in
Central that a one-man engine company responds to, now requires a
second Central station to respond
just to get sufficient personnel on
scene, creating a huge gap for coverage in the fire district.
Central Fire Department’s two
one-man engine companies routinely are relocated to cover empty
stations that are on other emergency
calls, thereby distributing the hazards of a one-man engine company
to all citizens in the fire district. Recently, a one-man engine company
from Central responded to a cardiac
arrest and another one-man engine
company responded to a working
house fire. These single firefighters were alone on the call for some
time, waiting on additional personnel to arrive and assist. While these

their duties, attempting to save life
and property, there is only so much
one firefighter can accomplish. That
places the public and firefighters in
unacceptable situations.
While paying taxes is not some-
thing anyone wants to do, the Central Fire Department directly saves
each home or business owner significant amounts of money each
year in fire insurance premiums.
Citizens of the Central Fire Department pay less than 2.5 million dollars in taxes and service fees to the
fire district each year.
In contrast, Central Fire Department home and business owners save over 14 million dollars on
their fire insurance premiums each
year. The additional personnel this
millage will allow us to employ will
assist us to keep our Class 3 fire rating, thereby keeping fire insurance
premiums low. The cost to the average home owner, with a home assessed at $200,000, will be $4.42 a
month.
Citizens of the Central Fire Department depend on the fire department in emergency situations. The
fire department depends on citizens
to provide the equipment and staffing to respond as professionals. We
have exhausted all options to increase staffing, and we would like
to thank you in advance for considering this proposal.

BATON ROUGE — The East Baton
Rouge Parish Republican Women’s
Club held the first Red Pelican
Award ceremonies at the Old State
Capitol on Oct. 22.
Five Republicans were presented
the Red Pelican Award for their service. The award winners were:
•Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne for serving as the state’s ambassador for
tourism
•Secretary of State Tom Schedler
for innovation in state and national
elections
•Clerk of Court Doug Welborn
for parish elections efficiency
•Ascension Parish Republican
chairman Kathryn Goppelt for conservative community advocacy

More than 300 guests attended
the event, which included a reception, food, entertainment, a silent
auction, videos on each of the honorees, and a ceremony in the old
House Chamber. Conducting the
ceremonies were Jeannene Kogler
and Peggy Vidrine of the EBR Parish Republican Women’s Club.
Before each honoree spoke, the
audience viewed a video about the
person’s life and accomplishments.

the chamber had been the locale of
numerous historic events, including

Edwards says senior running back
Anthony Johnson is one of the hardest working members of the Central
Wildcat football team.
But before last Friday night, Anthony had been on the playing field
for only four or five plays all season.
Then last Monday Coach Sid promised to put him in the game against
Walker. So Friday night, the Wildcat senior finally got his chance and
made the most of it! It was indeed
a night to remember! He scored two
touchdowns for Central — a fiveyard run in the 1st quarter and a 48yard run in the 4th quarter.
Anthony has had a tough year. He
lives with his dad, who has been on
dialysis all year. Congratulations to
this Wildcat star, Anthony Johnson!
