Studiengang Biomedical Engineering/ Medizintechnik (Master)
In which career fields
will I work?
Biomedical Technology belongs to the leading growth sectors in a national and global
perspective. Key technologies like medical imaging, or minimally invasive surgery are still
at the beginning of its market development. Globalization of markets and a strong
customer orientation, which are typical for the field of biomedical engineers, ensures very
good employment perspectives.
Avivities of biomedical engineers are:
• Product management
• Research and development
• Maintenance and repair
• Marketing and sales
• Quality management
• Training and education
• Safety advisor
• Hospital planning
Our graduates use engineering know-how to evaluate and solve problems in medicine,
and therefore providing an improvement of health care. They work with other health care
professionals including physicians, nurses, therapists and technicians. The degree
"Master of Science" qualifies for positions in research and development and delivers skills
required for scientific work up to postgraduate programs (e.g. PhD, Promotion).
What is the content of
the degree
programme?
The program offers advanced knowledge in the field of medical technology with a focus on
electrical engineering and information technology. In addition, the ECTS which have been
acquired in the preceding study makes a difference.
Students who enter the master program with 210 ECTS will have to study a core
curriculum of five different "modules": Applied Mathematics, Applied Medical
Technologies, Medical Data Systems and Advanced Biosignal Processing, Management
of Medical Technologies and a Biomedical Project. The modules/courses can be chosen
from the postgraduate teaching provision of our university or of other national or
international universities (after approval of the individual combination of modules/courses
by the examination board).
The mediation of subject-matter content (technical qualification) throughout the study
program is accompanied by training of soft skills. The study closes with master thesis (to
be written in six month) in which the student shall demonstrate achieved competence in
research and development preferably in interdisciplinary settings.
What is particular to
the degree
programme?
Teaching and assessments are predominantly in English language, but German is spoken
in all laboratories and is the predominant language at the University. Therefore,
knowledge in German language is needed.
Are there special
requirements for
foreign students
applicants?
Foreign applicants should clarify admission requirements, courses of studies, and
acceptance of foreign reports and certificates well in advance of coming to Germany, i.e.
as early as one year before the degree program starts. Information can be found online:
www.haw-hamburg.de/english and www.haw-hamburg.de/international.
Can I study abroad?
Students planning to spend a semester or other academic training abroad find useful
information on the website of the International Office: www.haw-hamburg.de/international

When can I apply?
What are the entry
requirements?
The degree program admits students for the winter- and the summersemester.
Application periods: 1st June - 15th July and 1st December - 15th January.
1. First degree as Bachelor (in related disciplines) qualifying for a professional
career or a comparable course of studies of at least three years or a Diploma of a
university.
2. Knowledge of English language proven by accepted certificates, i. e. TOEFL-test
(at least 550 points paper test or 220 points computer test or 83 points
internet-based), IELTS (minimum Band 6) or comparable tests or certificates
about good performance in foreign countries.
3. Knowledge of German: A2 / Goethe Certificate (for non-German)
4. Applicants holding a first academic degree (bachelor, diploma etc.) from
non-EU-countries: Graduate Record Examination (GRE); further information at
www.gre.org.
5. Curriculum vitae.
6. Statement of motivation.
7. Letter of recommendation from a university professor (optional)
Important note for applicants with 180 CPs (ECTS) for courses which require 210 CPs
(ECTS) from the first degree: Applicants who possess 180 credit points (ECTS) from their
bachelor degree must acquire a further 30 credit points. Applicants can find out from the
department concerned which examinations and tuition must be completed. They will then
be temporarily admitted and enrolled for one term in order to complete the missing 30
credit points. After the end of the first semester, the department will inform the student
administration centre and the examination office which of the students who had been
provisionally admitted gained the missing 30 credit points and which did not.
Important for applicants who have not done 20 weeks of industrial internship during or
after their first degree studies: These applicants can be temporarily admitted and enrolled
under the requirement of catching-up missing weeks of practice within the master
program. This will probably prolong the total time of study. Details will be defined by the
department.
