The weather is finally changing and
we can begin to think about snow
again. Mammoth opens next month
and our Pre-Race Party is November
8th. Please attend this meeting as
it’s a great way to socialize with
your fellow members and we are
having a by-laws vote. See ya there.
Your Programs Chair is hard at
work planning a lot of activities; please remember to print
the calendar so you don’t miss out. There is no way I can
list everything that is going on.
Our next general meeting is December 3rd at the
Marina City Club, Holiday Toys for Tot’s dinner. We will
continue to have meetings every other month.
So, to recap we will have meetings every even
month and newsletters every odd month.
The Snow Gala is November 1st, 2014 at 6:00pm at
Woodland Hills Hilton. See Sandy Blackwell for raffle
tickets. California Gold Pass will be auctioned at the Snow
Gala. You must be present to bid (good 365 days a year at
20+ ski resorts in California).
Ski Dazzle 2014 is December 4-7, 2014. For more
information please see our website.
The Annual Ski Trip is to Taos, New Mexico from
March 14-21, 2015. Please look at the flyer in the newsletter and sign up today. This trip will sell out fast as not only
can you ski but you can look around the towns and truly be
a tourist seeing the sites.
As you know our club is made up of volunteers,
remember that without you this club cannot grow. Please
take time to help your club continue to be a source of activity, fun and exciting events. As we live our life we continue to make memories, let’s keep making the best memories
we can.
Please feel free to contact me or email any suggestions you have. This is your club and your voice matters. I
want to know what you are thinking and what you would
like your club to do.
Thanks again for your support and commitment to
our great club. !

Summer Trip for 2015
The Board of Directors is considering a Summer Trip for
2015. Options are on the table. One of the most talked
about was an Alaska cruise with possible extension. We
would like to hear from you about your ideas and your
willingness to lead a trip. Please let any Board member

Ski Clubs’ 2014-15 Trips to Mammoth
by Steve Elkins, Mammoth Trips Chair
Calendar of Trips - page 5
Ray Urode Remembered
I met Ray at the Ski Club. My fondest memories all relate to snow skiing, water skiing and
parties. Ray and Ginger never missed a party. They were always the last ones to leave the
dance floor (Fred & Ginger).
The 1997 Lake Powell houseboat and water ski trip was something I think Ray really
enjoyed, coming from Buffalo – lots of sunshine and warm weather.
I don’t remember how many Learn to Ski and Race Camps at Mammoth Ray attended, but he quickly became a strong intermediate skier. On both the 1998 Aspen and 2000
Sun Valley trips, Ray had no trouble keeping up with the group. His biggest test was on the 1999 Zermatt
Switzerland trip, a very intimidating mountain at the foot of the Matterhorn. The cable car droped us off at the top of
the mountain – 10,500 ft. The trail to Cervinia, Italy, across the Swiss Alps, was 8 miles long with a 7,600 ft. vertical
drop. It was an epic run for all of us. It took all day to complete the trip and return to Zermatt. Ray looked and skied
like a downhill racer – a man possessed. It was unbelievable how well he skied that day on such a long and challenging run. His smile never left his face. That’s how I would like to remember Ray; smiling.

Taos.
Santa Fe - Ski Santa Fe is nestled high in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains just 16 miles from the
heart of historic Santa Fe, New Mexico. With a base area elevation of 10,350 feet, Ski Santa Fe is among the
highest ski areas in the continental United States. The Millennium Triple Chairlift will take snow sport enthusiasts
to a new height of 12,075 feet and some of the southwest's finest skiing. The vistas atop Ski Santa Fe are
unsurpassed and act as the gateway for thrills including steep bump runs, powder filled chutes, gladed tree-skiing,
and plenty of groomers.
TAOS - Located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range in New Mexico, the “big snow basin north of Wheeler
Peak in La Cal Basin” became the home of Taos Ski Valley in 1954. Fueled by Ernie Blake’s desire to have a ski
resort of his own, Ernie and Rhoda Blake lived in an 11-foot camper in the base area and began to build the worldclass ski resort.
Today, from the top of Kachina Peak at 12,481 feet (3804 meters), skiers and riders can access steep chutes, big
bumps, cornices, and glades. For the less adventurous, Taos Ski Valley offers skiers and riders of every ability
level perfectly maintained groomers to carve on. Offering 1,294 acres of accessible terrain, and 305 inches of
snow annually, skiers and snowboarders will find Taos Ski Valley’s rugged, authentic terrain a great place to play.
Santa Fe is overflowing with history and culture. Check out museums that are ranked
some of the best in the countryǃ Stroll Santa Fe's cobbled streets lined with eccentric
shops specializing in locally crafted items like silver jewelry, turquoise, and pottery.
Taos Pueblo Elevation: 7,112 ft; Population: 1,264
1,000-year old Pueblo village and trade center;
experience ancient ceremonial dances and shop for hand-crafted wares. Or take
an art stroll through the many wonderful galleries of downtown Taos.
