WHAT WAS I THINKING – Abstract
painting by Donna K. McGee
is her two-year study of color,
texture, and form.
Working in acrylic and texture often on a large scale,
McGee's bold painterly brushwork combines with
dramatic forms and color for a breathtaking impact upon
the viewer.
McGee is frequently asked, “What were you thinking
when you painted this?” She answers, “Sometimes I have
no memory of how it all came together. That may sound
odd. I am very intuitive when I paint; I become totally
immersed in the colors, textures, and form as they mix
and change before my eyes.
“I’m always moved when others tell me about things they
see in my paintings, that I never intended. The show will
include my thoughts along side each painting as part of
the exhibition. WHAT WAS I THINKING? is seldom what
the viewer sees and I love that interaction. What others
think while viewing my work becomes – All in the eye of
the beholder.”
McGee has caught the interest of collectors and her work
can be found in DC area corporate conference rooms,
lobbies, and private homes, as well as in PA, OR, NC, New
York, Chicago, and London.

of rebirth, technology, and social media in the

Observations of Form, thru November 15. The
relationship between the work of Michael
Hampton and Paul Jett is one of both harmony
and contrast. Hampton’s watercolors highlight
the absolute symmetry and precision of neoclassical architecture, which emphasizes exacting classical line and proportion. Jett’s photographs capture flora he comes across while
taking walks in the woods—like dangling tree
limbs or Spanish moss. Yet both artists demonstrate the power of simplicity, the impact of
a clean line, and the drama of using negative
space. These qualities bring cohesion and unity
to their very dissimilar subject matter.

ments of the 20th century. But as part of the
revolution generation in Iran, Mozaffari faced
tough European tourist visa restrictions which
prevented her from traveling to the place
she most desired to visit. In 1998, Mozaffari
immigrated to Canada and, after receiving her
Canadian passport, finally realized her dream
of visiting Paris. The exhibition represents
Mozaffari’s 30-year love affair with the city.
Mozaffari’s use of gold leaf evokes the Baroque
domes of 17th century Paris. Her color palette
captures the famous “gris” of the Paris sky and
the sparkling atmosphere that typifies “The
City of Light”.

GENERIC ART SOLUTIONS, thru Nov 29th. This
New Orleans-based art duo use nearly every
art medium to examine the recurring themes
of human drama and the (dis)functions of
contemporary society. Always rooted in performance, they play every character in their work.
In their more distilled “duets” we see something
of a yin and yang (a balance between individuals that aren’t quite interchangeable), but in
their more elaborate “stageings” the result is as
epic as the subject matter itself. By combining
Classical, Romantic, and Baroque compositional
elements with contemporary pictorial techniques, they manage to illuminate the common
thread that connects past histories with current
events. This strategy creates something of a
“Déjà Vu effect” that is often driven by the wellknown works of art they reference.

century printmakers who excelled in woodcuts
and wood engravings. American printmakers experimented heavily with technique, by
manipulating the grain of the wooden matrix
and crafting new methods of ink and color
application. Artists created editioned prints,

Our 2014 Winter Contemporary Show, Nov
21-Feb 14. Over twenty artists, who use
printmaking as their primary medium, were
selected. Their works reflect the current eclecticism of contemporary printmaking. Highlights

Heather McMordie, Su-Li Hung, and Robert
Kipniss, and international printmakers Cleo
Wilkinson and Nancy Previs.
The Old Print Gallery specializes in contemporary
and early 20th century prints, from American and
local DC artists. Established in historic Georgetown in 1971, the gallery has become one of the
most respected antique print and map galleries

My 20 20 Vision – Experimental Works by Terry
Svat thru Nov 30. Svat's 2020 Vision has tapped
into the mysterious images of the past as well
as her own past works to produce another new
idea. Even before you enter Terry Svat’s exhibit
you will be greeted by her “larger than life” cutouts. They encourage you to look more closely
at the collection of ideas, symbols, markings,
and tiny pieces integrated in her work.
Washington Printmakers Gallery is a cooperative print gallery founded in 1985. Since that
time, it has been the Washington area’s primary
source for contemporary, artist-pulled fine art
prints. Its exceptional local and national member artists exhibit regularly in group and solo

Liz Wolf’s recent work continues her interest in
reducing natural forms to their visual essence.
The shape, texture and color of a natural element is synthesized into an abstraction. Her
intent is to convey to the viewer the sensuous
impression of the botanical.
The monoprints, each unique, are constructed
by overlaying many layers of etching ink onto
a heavy artist paper. The artist uses digital
imagery that is transferred and leaves that are
inked and printed. An array of contemporary
printing techniques is used for image transfer.
The techniques include: drawing thin layers of
ink on plexiglass, transferring digital images via
lithographic techniques, gum transfer and color
xerox transfer.

printed and given free of charge. Often these
images are the only pictures a person has had
in decades or that a family may have together.

explore the natural and built worlds, society,
and fantasy through expressive, conceptual
work. Working in varied mediums—paint,
clay, and pastels as well as furniture, molded
Styrofoam, art paper, and plants—Gloria
Chapa, Ellen Cornett, Liz Lescault, Pam Rogers,
and Claudia Vess reveal their edge and feminist eye. Evocative and ambiguous organic
forms appear in Lescault’s work, and botanic
magical realism is conjured from natural
materials in Rogers’s art; Chapa reconfigures
domestic discards to explore the detritus
of modern life; and Vess’s machine-formed
Styrofoam sculptures call to mind the built
environment, while Cornett’s dark fairytales
explore the terrain of subtext and dreams.

is a collaboration of Providence RI Printmakers and Printmakers Inc. A limited number of
portfolios are available for sale. The exhibit
of 31 framed prints is on view from Nov 1–
December 31. Printmakers Inc. remains the only group
studio dedicated to the art of original handpulled prints. Member artists work in a
variety of traditional printmaking techniques
that include intaglio, lithography, relief,
monotypes and screen-printing.
