Program Description
During this three-hour palliative care workshop
participants will hear from a team of health-care
professionals about the diagnosis and treatment
of brain tumors. Each member of the team will
speak for 20 minutes with the entire presentation
culminating in a case discussion. This discussion will
integrate some of the material covered throughout
the workshop to illustrate how a tumor board
functions.

Objectives
By the end of the program, participants will be able to:
1. Dr. Elizabeth Schneider, Neurosurgeon
•
Discuss neurosurgical considerations in management of a newly diagnosed brain tumor.
•
Define total / sub-total resection.
•
Identify when re-resection is to be considered.
•
Discuss surgical complications.
2. Dr. Jonathan Grynspan, Radiologist •
Briefly outline etiology: genetic / environmental factors.
•
Outline various imaging modalities used in diagnosis of brain tumors.
•
Discuss advantages / disadvantages of various imaging modalities.
3. Dr. Andrew Pearce, Radiation Oncologist •
Describe staging and grading of malignant primary brain tumors (MPBT).
•
Outline radiation oncology considerations in treatment of MPBT.
•
Identify treatment modalities that may be used.
•
Discuss indications for each treatment modality.
•
Discuss complications of radiation treatment.
4. Dr. Rahim Khomani, Medical Oncologist
•
Briefly describe classification of tumor types and prognosis.
•
Outline treatment options in systemic therapy of MPBT.
•
Discuss new treatments on horizon.
5. Dr. Matias Mariani, Neuropsychologist
•
Outline more common challenges and cognitive changes faced by patients and caregivers that
HCSPs hould be aware of.
•
Outline potential coping strategies for patients / care providers.
6. Dr. Linda Tenhunen, Palliative Care Physician
•
Identify common issues encountered in care patients with brain tumors.
•
Discuss the importance of advance care planning.
