Hudson Happenings 6 November 2014 Cultural Prize Giving From the Headmaster’s Desk English and Maths We are very proud of our pupils who recorded impressive results recently in English and Mathematics. Out of 34 345 pupils from all over South Africa, Dylan Kurten came first in the Grade 4 SACEE Language Challenge with 97% while Palesa Mandile and Liyanda Vusani came joint second in the Grade 5 paper with 99% each. In the Amesa Maths Olympiad, Benjamin Brent scored 95% and is one of only five Grade 7 pupils from South Africa to be invited by SAMF to the prestigious week long Maths Development Camp at Stellenbosch University in December. Support Thank you to everyone who attended our Grade 7 Academic Awards Assembly, our Cultural Prize‐giving and our Work Display. I trust that you were impressed by the evidence of our children's talents and the hard work put in by them and our staff members. Staffing The post of rugby co‐ordinator, which is being vacated by Miles Rayner at the end of the year, will be advertised soon. We are interviewing shortlisted candidates this week for our Grade 5 and Grade 7 posts and we shall announce the successful candidates in due course. Scholar patrol operator, Eric Webb, will be leaving us next week as he has secured permanent employment. We thank Eric for the caring manner in which he handled his duties and wish him well in his new job. Absenteeism While it is expected that children who are ill remain at home to rest and recover, teachers have noticed an increase in absenteeism that appears to be based on parental choice. A number of children have missed school due to extra holidays being taken, for example. The school does not have the authority to grant time off for pupils. The responsibility of ensuring that children attend school lies with the parents. As a school, we implore our parents to take this responsibility seriously and use the weekends and school holidays for time off. It creates extra pressure for teachers and children when key sections of the syllabus is missed and needs to be caught up. If parents insist on taking children out of school during term time, please understand that the responsibility lies with you and your children to catch up missed work. The 2015 school terms have already been published, so please plan accordingly. Work Display On Wednesday evening, 29 October, we held our annual work display. This gives our learners the opportunity to show their parents and loved ones all the projects, posters, artworks and books they have been working so hard on during the year. The children could also demonstrate their skills in our specialised facilities, such as the ceramic studio and the three computer laboratories. Our sports academy coaching specialists also demonstrated their techniques. From the Senior Primary... AMESA Maths Challenge Results The final round of the Sasol SAMF South African Maths Challenge was written at Merrifield on Monday, 28 July. Our results were very pleasing, with 69 of our 87 learners who participated in the final round receiving certificates. We achieved 15 gold, 35 silver, and 19 bronze certificates. Gold certificates are awarded for 85% and above. The Hudsonians (pictured below) who received these are: Nika Eybers and Joane Joseph (Grade 4 Doubles) Daniel Emslie (Grade 4 Singles) Brooklyn de Klerk and Oyama Mzayidume (Grade 6 Doubles) Milisa Sithole, Corbin Stander, Aron Hubbard, Nicole Thompson, Jessica Craddock and Joshua Emslie (Grade 6 Singles) Skye Coombes and Melissa Bham (Grade 7 Doubles) Klara Eybers and Benjamin Brent (Grade 7 Singles) In addition to these fantastic results, we are proud of Benjamin Brent who is one of 5 learners nationally to be invited to the prestigious SAMF week long development camp at Stellenbosch University during December. The camp is seen as a first step in the selection of teams to represent South Africa at the International Mathematical Olympiad and the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad. SACEE Language Challenge Results Hudson Park is very proud of its achievements in the South African Council for English Education Language Challenge this year. 34 345 learners from 89 schools nationwide participated in 2014. Dylan Kurten won the national Grade 4 section, with a score of 97%. Palesa Mandile and Liyanda Vusani placed joint second in the national Grade 5 section, with a score of 99%. They are pictured here with our school’s English head, Mrs Sheryl Human. From the ICT Department... Our children live in a digital age and the challenge for all schools is to embrace appropriate new technology as a tool for enhancing learning. Hudson Park Primary has always taken a lead in this area being one of the first schools to utilise interactive whiteboards in our classrooms as well as with our computer academy. As part of Vision 2020, initiated in 2010, our ICT department has been studying local and international trends and particularly the use of tablets/laptops by learners. The research has yielded mixed results – some successes and some failures. The challenge for us is to embrace this technology but to do so in a manner which does not create unnecessary cost for the parents or risk to the learners who would need to transport these devices between home and school. We have chosen Office 365 as the platform for Cloud computing. This is supported by the Education Department who has a school license agreement with Microsoft. Microsoft Office is also the software required for Matric IT subjects and the most commonly used software in business. We are considering providing each Foundation Phase Class with tablets to be used in the classroom for group / mat activities. We believe that tablets are ideally suited to young learners whereas laptops/netbooks are being evaluated for Grade 4‐7 pupils because of their greater functionality both at home and at school. Installation of a direct fibre connection is the first step we will be taking to ensure that the additional devices can be accommodated onto our network without impacting the speed and quality of connectivity, ensuring efficient use of the new technology. This will take us closer to achieving our vision and work will begin on the direct fibre connection in early 2015. The Grade 7's wrote 7 computer skills exams endorsed by the ICDL (International Computer Driver’s Licence). All our learners achieved gold certificates, and the grade average was 88%. The exams topics were IT basics, files and folders, drawing tools, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and internet and email. Our top achievers, whose averages ranged between 94‐98%, were Klara Eybers, Siobhan Barry, Erin Bruton, Zenande Rubushe, Dylan Chantler and Bradley Schreiber. One to Watch ‐ Old Hudsonian stars in South African Dragon’s Den The popular British TV show Dragon’s Den has recently launched a South African version. The premise of Dragon’s Den is to match startup companies with investors who will aid them to grow their businesses. Old Hudsonian Vinny Lingham is one of the South African investors. Vinny, who now lives in San Francisco, made a substantial amount of money by creating internet technology based companies, such as Clicks2Customers, Yola and Gyft. Vinny has won multiple accolades, including being appointed as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader in 2009 and being named as one of 10 young African millionaires to watch by Forbes magazine in 2012. Vinny co‐founded the Silicon Cape NGO, which aims to make the Western Cape a technology hub. Earlier this year Vinny sold Gyft for an estimated R1 billion. Watch Dragon’s Den on Mzansi Magic (DSTV channel 161) on Tuesdays at 19:00 to see Vinny impart business wisdom and encouragement to young entrepreneurs. From the Pastoral Department... Once again our school contributed to the Santa’s Shoebox Project. Through this project volunteers pledge to fill a shoebox with Christmas gifts for an underprivileged child. Hudson Park pledged 66 boxes in total. The Grade R’s contributed 49 boxes, along with odds and ends to assist filling additional boxes. A big thank you to the parents and children for their enthusiastic participation. From the Sports Department... Sports Results 27 October 2014 3 November 2014 Cricket U13A: HPPS 187/4 – (J.
