of the world". In 2005 the millennium of Kazan was celebrated.
The tourists in Kazan
More than 1000 years ago Kazan was founded as frontier fortress in the north of the Volga
Bulgaria.
In 1438 Bulgar fortress was captured by the Golden Horde khan Ulu-Mukhamedd, the city
became the capital of the Kazan khanate.
The series of wars with the Moscow principality at first compelled Moscow to render tribute
to the Kazan khanate, and as a result led to a capture of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible's troops in
1552, with the subsequent destruction of the most part of the city and resettlement of Tatars
on marshy coast of Kaban Lake, having laid the foundation of the Old-Tatar settlement of
Kazan.
After final suppression of revolts in the Kazan region at the
city a new era in the history — as a part of the Russian state
began.
In 1708 Kazan became the capital of the large Kazan
province.
From 60th years of the XVIII century building of the city
accepts the ordered character, there were wooden pavements,
bridges across Bulak and the Kazanka river.
The city became the educational and cultural center of the
Volga region: in 1758 in Kazan the Russia's first provincial
gymnasium was opened, in 1771 — the first madrasahs were
opened, in 1791 there appeared a constant theater.
