Emil in Lönneberga
New York City for nine years from the age of three. He decided to become an artist
at an early age, and after art studies in Sweden went to Paris to study for Fernand
Legér and André Lhote.
His association with Astrid Lindgren began when Astrid saw one of his drawings
and thought that the boy in the picture looked like an Emil. Björn Berg illustrated
the books about Emil for over 30 years.

”I want to write for
a readership that can
create miracles. Children
create miracles when they
read. That’s why children
need books.”
Astrid Lindgren is one
of Sweden’s most beloved
authors. Her works have been
translated into more than 90 languages. She renewed children’s
literature and combined artistic integrity with commitment to the
rights of children and young people.
Astrid Lindgren once said that she always wrote for her inner
child. By doing that, she reached out to the whole world and her
stories will live forever.
The Swedish government has founded an international prize in
her name, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
