Winterreise (Winter Journey) concert with American tenor
Alan Bennett and Filipino pianist Albert Tiu from Singapore
Abelardo Hall Auditorium
College of Music, UP Diliman
6:00 PM
Winter Journey is a song cycle composed in 1827,
just a year before Schubert’s death. Finding
coldness and solitude, the protagonist of the
song decides to leave the town where he had
once found acceptance and love. He begins his
‘winter journey’ as he leaves the town with the
words “A stranger I came, a stranger I leave.” At
first he passes through familiar places, but near
the end he makes the mindful decision to go
down a track “from which no man has ever
returned.” From this point onward his plunge into
lunacy is certain. The final song presents a mystery for the audience. Ticket price is at PhP 300.
Alan Bennett, an American tenor, is admired for his performances in
concert and oratorio work. Specifically, he is known for his interpretations of the
compositions of Mozart, George Frideric Handel, and Bach. He studied vocal
performance at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He earned his
bachelor’s degree in 1984 and master’s degree in 1987. Currently serving as
head of vocal studies at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music of the
National University of Singapore, he used to be an associate professor of music
at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana.

CALL FOR PAPERS
FIELD SCAN 2015
UP Diliman and the Philippine Cluster of Performance
Studies International Conference
Field Scan is a roundtable conference to be convened among UP
system-based scholars and/or artists who have come in whatever
degree of working partnership with the UP community to weigh in on
the fairly recent shifts in both the practice and methods and
frameworks of study drawn from and/or applied to performance on 8
April 2015.
Precisely because Performance Studies as a field of study increasingly
enshrined in the international academe has its roots elsewhere in the
West, Field Scan is also a tactical gesture to deliberately find out how
Filipino scholar-researchers and artists have organically developed
methods to study and evolve grassroots practices, as well as possibly
find how the knowledge produced thus far could be evoked in ongoing
global conversations about what constitutes performance and how
and why performance research could even be more critically
sharpened. It is in this light that we invite 250-word abstracts for
email submission to [email protected] by November 30,
2014.
The abstracts may refer to analytical presentations of specific artistic/
research projects or be carefully considered attempts to critique or
invoke disciplinal and interdisciplinal frameworks that have
influenced the ways in which we have applied the tropes of
performativity and Filipino allied variants such as tanghal, palabas
and danas to bring about deeper and more productive engagements
with performance, its agents, publics and other invested agencies.
Please note that selected presentations from Field Scan would also be
taken for consideration in the upcoming Sa Tagilid na Yuta/On Tilted
Earth: Performance, Disaster, and Resilience in Archipelagic Space
conference which is the Philippine cluster project for Performance
Studies international 2015 to be held at De La Salle University and UP
Diliman in November 2015. The CFP for that conference may be found
here: http://fluidstates.org/article.php?id=62.
For Field Scan in UP Diliman (April 2015), the following are the
proposed sub-themes:
1.
Performance and Language-in relation to the language and
methods of performance studies as presently constituted; what
vocabularies/structures of thought are we bringing to bear on the
analysis of the making and experiencing of performance from the Philippines?; what are the cognitive modalities
invoked-- including and apart from performance studies intersections with the study and practices of history,
linguistics, sociology, anthropology, art studies as it converses with forms such as film, music, theater,
dance/movement studies, visual arts;
2.
Conceptualizing performance-what are the various theoretical and practical constructs that currently operate
in the fields of performance practice and performance research? How do we presently evolve parameters of study and
practice? What challenges and proposed solutions are we circulating in the field of the moment/contemporary
practice and research?
3.
Directions in Philippine performance research-what areas of study as well as new territories are
scholar-researchers-artists presently activating in their work? What convergences and divergences are arising in this
modest survey of individuated attempts at critical inquiry and practice?
