Why is that Cathedral so important? As Bishop of Rome, the Pope’s ‘cathedra’ [Latin for ‘chair’] or symbol of his teaching authority - is in Rome’s main Cathedral. Most erroneously think that’s Saint Peter Basilica, as many think Washington D.C.’s Cathedral is the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception; actually it’s Saint Matthew Cathedral: site of the only Catholic President’s Funeral Mass, JFK, in 1963. I hope you know that the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption in Trenton is the ‘seat’ of our Bishop’s cathedra. Only our Bishop may sit in it and preside from it - and any other Catholic Bishop to whom he extends that privilege. But notice how the Preface for this day makes NO mention of any Bishop’s cathedra or of the Lateran Basilica -which is called the ‘Mother Church’ of Christianity or our first Church. It was a gift from the Emperor Constantine, given as the site where many of the Church’s Bishops met for one of our first Councils - in AD 313! It became the home of Pope Sylvester I, who died on 12/31/335 - or the first papal apartments. Preface: The mystery of the Church: the Bride of Christ and the Temple of the Spirit. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For in your benevolence you are pleased to dwell in this house of prayer in order to perfect us as the temple of the Holy Spirit, supported by the perpetual help of your grace and resplendent with the glory of a life acceptable to you. Year by year you sanctify the Church, the Bride of Christ, foreshadowed in visible buildings, so that, rejoicing as the mother of countless children, she may be given her place in your heavenly glory. If God Is Everywhere, Do We Need Churches? Absolutely! But while God is everywhere, He easily gets lost in life’s hustle and bustle, so we need ‘consecrated’ [which means ‘set aside for holy purposes’] places to pray. Besides, as the Bible often notes, God Himself chose certain designated, blessed places as the point of contact between Him and us. And as Catholic Christians we have all the more reason to rejoice in the dedication of any church! God ‘Dwells in This House of Prayer.’ One of the most solemn, moving rites in the Dedication of a Church is when the Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession to its new home: the tabernacle. Through His ‘Real Presence,’ God literally dwells in every church -+- from the most magnificent Cathedral to the most humble country Chapel. Through the ages there has been much tension as to how to respect our Lord’s Eucharistic Presence; since Christ dwells both in us, who are His Body, and in the Tabernacle, which contains His Real Presence. While we may never find the perfect balance, any rubric or custom that ignores one over the other is not orthodox! As current rubrics make clear: once Mass begins, our focal point is the Altar, the symbol of Christ’s ACTIVE presence among those ‘gathered in His Name’ - NOT His static Presence in the Tabernacle. Even the Preface for the Dedication of the Church makes this preference clear when it highlights US: the HUMAN Temples of God’s dwelling, not the Tabernacle or the building. But as this Preface also makes clear: we cannot BE God’s Temple unless we COME to God’s temple to receive the grace - especially through Word and Sacrament - to BE His Temple. So the Preface highlights the Baptismal Font at which Mother Church gives birth to her many children! It’s Not a One-Shot-Deal. As this Preface notes, by coming to God’s Temple, the Church, ‘year by year’ - or time and again - week after week, we are gifted with the graces and blessings we need to truly become ‘the Church!’ But as the old saying goes: ‘Going to Church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.” What are YOU doing to BECOME God’s Temple: His Church? In Christ, Father Mark 514 page 2 Readings for the Week of November 9, 2014 Monday: Ti 1:1-9; Ps 24:1b-4ab, 5-6; Lk 17:1-6 Tuesday: Ti 2:1-8, 11-14; Ps 37:3-4, 18, 23, 27, 29; Lk 17:7-10 Wednesday: Ti 3:1-7; Ps 23:1b-6; Lk 17:11-19 Thursday: Phlm 7-20; Ps 146:7-10; Lk 17:20-25 Friday: 2 Jn 4-9; Ps 119:1-2, 10-11, 17-18; Lk 17:26-37 Saturday: 3 Jn 5-8; Ps 112:1-6; Lk 18:1-8 Sunday: Prv 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31; Ps 128:1-5; 1 Thes 5:1-6; Mt 25:14-30 [14-15, 19-21] The Altar Bread, which will become the Body of Christ at the Masses celebrated during the week, will be offered in loving memory of Honora Rispoli requested by husband, and Gabe & Nick The Sanctuary Candle which burns near the Tabernacle in Church, the reminder of the Lord’s Presence in the Most Holy Eucharist, will burn with 50th Anniversary Blessings for Patricia & Edward Mount, Sr. Requested by Paul Cullen For Sanctuary Intentions, contact the Parish Office at 732-270-3980 St. Justin the Martyr Nursing Ministry sponsors a Chair Exercise Program.
