[11/09 is the Feast of the Lateran Basilica in Rome; 11/23 is Christ the King, and 11/30 is the 1st Sunday of Advent.] Of the five Prefaces for a Funeral Mass, this one is - by far - the most common since most Priests use it at Funeral Masses. These words are probably all too familiar: Preface I for the Dead: The hope of resurrection in Christ It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. In him the hope of blessed resurrection has dawned, that those saddened by the certainty of dying might be consoled by the promise of immortality to come. Indeed for your faithful, Lord, life is changed not ended, and, when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven. And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim: Life Is Changed, Not Ended. As the five Prefaces for Funeral Masses will show, there are many biblically based ways to strive to grasp the bitter reality of death. That, in and of itself, is the first point: our faith does not exempt us from the sting of death; but while we can grieve and mourn, we cannot do so like those who have no hope. [C.f. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18] For we believe death is merely a transition, not an end; and even though we will and must return to the dust from which we came [C.f. Genesis 3:19] our life never ends but goes on for all eternity! What a comfort to know the Church’s prayers permit - and even condone - our grieving and mourning! Earthly Dust To Heavenly Dwelling. Why was cremation once forbidden for Catholics in most parts of the USA? [It was always permitted in other countries and in the USA in the winter, in areas where the ground was frozen solid for long periods of time.] Since some, like the Masons, cremated their dead as a denial of the bodily resurrection, and many Catholics back then were illiterate, such rules were necessary so ‘simple’ Catholics did not inadvertently take part in a heretical statement - or cause scandal by opting for an anti-Christian practice. But since cremation only escalates our return to dust, and the Masons no longer do it to mock our faith in bodily resurrection, it is permitted - ideally only after the Funeral Mass with the body present. Why? A Funeral Mass helps reaffirm our faith in all that God has promised us. For through Word [the Bible] and Sacrament [especially Eucharist], signs and symbols, hymns and orations, we profess that Christ has already conquered sin and death. And that brings us to the second theme of this Preface: As With Christ’s Body, So With Our Body! Our sacramental ‘economy,’ or the way the Church dispenses all God invested in her, literally makes present for us all Jesus made present when He walked among us. So when a Priest or Deacon baptizes, it is actually Christ who baptizes us through him. When a Priest celebrates Mass, Christ makes Himself present - in His Word and in the Eucharist - through that Priest. While not a Sacrament, the Rite of Christian Burial does for our body what was done to Christ’s Body - to help us remember that we who share in His Death will also share in His Resurrection! That’s why the sign of the cross is traced, as at Baptism, on the deceased persons’ forehead, and they are sprinkled with holy water. And we reverence their body since it was fed by the Eucharist, anointed in Baptism, Confirmation and the Sacrament of the Sick - just as Christ’s Body was anointed with oil. Then it rests in a tomb, as did Christ’s Body, until the Day of Resurrection, when He will awaken us and take us to join Him, body and soul, in heavenly glory! In Christ, Father Mark 514 page 2 Readings for the Week of October 12, 2014 Monday: Gal 4:22-24, 26-27, 31 — 5:1; Ps 113:1b-5a, 6-7; Lk 11:29-32 Tuesday: Gal 5:1-6; Ps 119:41, 43-45, 47-48; Lk 11:37-41 Wednesday: Gal 5:18-25; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 11:42-46 Thursday: Eph 1:1-10; Ps 98:1-6; Lk 11:47-54 Friday: Eph 1:11-14; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 12-13; Lk 12:1-7 Saturday: 2 Tm 4:10-17b; Ps 145:10-13, 17-18; Lk 10:1-9 Sunday: Is 45:1, 4-6; Ps 96:1, 3-5, 7-10; 1 Thes 1:1-5b ALTAR-ROSARY/ HOLY NAME SOCIETY ANNUAL COMMUNION BREAKFAST SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19TH, 10:00 AM TOMS RIVER HOTEL RT. 37, TOMS RIVER COST OF TICKET: $20 Tickets sold after Masses, or call: Pat McDonald: 732-270-4061 or Jean Glynn: 732-270-0656 PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE SYNOD ON THE FAMILY On October 8, 2013, Pope Francis announced that in October 2014 there would be an Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on topics related to the family and evangelization. Pope Francis provided this prayer for the Synod of Bishops on the Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love, to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division: may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, may the approaching Synod of Bishops make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer.
