No two jobs are
ever the same for
Stuart Baines and
his landscaping
crew.
L
ANDSCAPER Stuart Baines
has worked on many a
challenging project during his
years as a landscaper.
Some of the more memorable
ones have been the multimillion
dollar Karori Park upgrade, the
climbing structure at Freyberg
beach, and the removal of fallen
trees on Tinakori Hill.
‘‘One of the most out-there
projects was taking those stormdamaged trees off the hill with a
heavy lift helicopter in a safe
manner,’’ says the former
Wellington City Council parks and
gardens portfolio manager.
‘‘That was tricky, forestry and
aviation mixed together in the
Capital, it was an unusual project
but one I will never forget because it
had a lot of challenges.’’
These days, as owner-operator of
his own company, Aspen
Landscaping, the Palmerston Northborn father of three is faced with a
whole different set of challenges.
As landscapers, Baines and his
team of 22 could be tackling projects
that range from simply weeding an
elderly woman’s garden through to
full-scale residential makeovers
that involve retaining walls, fences,
pergolas, decking, outdoor
fireplaces, instant lawn and all
planting.
And while there are always
challenges along the way, Baines
says working in the greater
Wellington region, particularly
central Wellington, poses even
greater ones.
‘‘We’ve got mountain goat staff,
that’s for sure,’’ he jokes.
‘‘They’re extremely fit for
Wellington’s hills.’’
He says no two sites are the
same, even getting materials on to a
site can require some thinking
outside the box.
‘‘We’ve come across landlocked
properties a number of times where
there’s no way to get materials in
other than to fly it in via helicopters
or cranes.
‘‘We had to crane a digger over a
house in Wadestown to put the
poles in, we’ve used cranes a few
times, it’s just a matter of coming
up with solutions to problems that
present themselves.’’
Those efforts have been
rewarded with accolades, winning
silver and bronze in the small
residential projects category of the
National Landscape Industry
awards this year.
‘‘It’s the first time
we’ve entered. I
couldn’t believe it, it
was very special and
it’s given the whole
team here a lift,’’ says
the newly appointed
New Zealand
Landscape executive
committee member.
Baines is quick to
praise his staff, made
up of builders,
construction guys
and gardeners, all of
whom he says are
passionate about
their work.
He also attributes
Aspen’s success to
date to his wife and
business partner
Jodi, who looks after
payroll, employment
contracts, marketing
and customer service.
Awards aside, it’s
the fact that no two
properties are the
same that excites
Baines most about
landscaping.
‘‘What always amazes me is
when you go to a property, you
might know the street but you
never know what’s around the
corner, the size or shape or garden
layout, whether it’s a great big hill
and most of the time it is, which
way it’s facing . . .’’
Much of Baines’ work is based
around clients wanting some flat
space, be it grass or garden, and due
to Wellington’s hills that usually
means retaining walls too.
‘‘That’s almost standard. From
there we develop it, whether it’s a
deck to put a spa pool on or, more
frequently, the smarter properties
are doing outdoor fireplaces or
pizza ovens. That’s because they
give out a bit of heat so it prolongs
the evenings outdoors in
Wellington.’’
Whatever the project, Baines
gets plenty of most satisfaction from
his clients’ feedback and from the
difference he knows it makes to
their lives.
‘‘One that springs to mind is a
job we did in Wadestown.
‘‘The people had a lovely garden
but it got too much for them so we
laid instant lawn about the size of
half a tennis court and put in a
whole lot of retaining walls. We
couldn’t crane a digger in so we
ended up digging it all by hand.
‘‘It absolutely just changed the
whole way they were using their
property, and with the planting we
did, it had a huge impact on their
lives.’’
But it doesn’t have to be big
dollar items, says Baines.
Sometimes the little things have
had just as big an impact to his
clients’ lifestyles.
‘‘Like a little path we did, an

accessway in Breaker Bay.
‘‘The people had a crumbled old
path up the back of their garden so
we put down concrete, pressed
stones and tiles, made it coastal
looking and that to them was a
major improvement.’’
It’s been 12 years since Stuart
and Jodi set up Aspen Landscapes,
a business they set up ‘‘on the side’’.
‘‘I was looking after the
[Wellington council’s] parks and
gardens portfolio at the time, but it
was mostly office-based and because
landscaping was something I’d
always done.
‘‘I grew a little business on the
weekends, a bit of an insurance
policy I guess, something I could
move into later in life.
‘‘In the beginning I used to take
the family car and trailer to work,
and I remember working just about
every weekend for a whole year – it
was tough going because we also
had a young family, but now we’ve
seen the light at the end of the
tunnel and every year we’ve
grown.’’
Baines says his passion for all
things horticulture is as strong now
as it was when he started out
working at a Palmerston North
garden centre after school in the
early 80s.
A call to the Palmerston North
City Council’s parks and gardens
boss for a work experience
opportunity paid dividends – after a
day’s work in the nursery and a
follow-up meeting he was offered an
apprenticeship.
‘‘I had visions of being a national
parks ranger, I was into tramping
and skiing, I wanted to work in the
outdoors, and this was a great
opportunity.’’
For four years Baines moved
around the city conducting all types
of horticultural applications, from
sports turf management to
arboricultural work to begonia
house displays and annual
plantings. He also gained a
thorough understanding of plants,
which species suit which climatic
and soil conditions.
After working his way up to be
foreman of the streets, trees and
garden crew, he headed off on his
OE, taking on landscaping jobs as
he went.
‘‘I really enjoyed that, it was
fantastic. We worked on some very
smart properties in Kensington, to
big lakes and man-made ponds in
Kent. I even did a stint in Yorkshire
running a garden centre in between
my three ski seasons in Kitzbuhel,
that was a lot of fun too.’’
Within a week of returning to
Palmerston North Baines was
offered a job back at his old
workplace, this time as recreation
assets officer.
‘‘I looked after all the service
contracts for parks and gardens, I
helped to develop maintenance
contracts and levels of service
required, developing all those kind
of standards.’’
It wasn’t long before he had
worked his way up to second-incharge, responsible for any project
development work that came up.
Armed with plenty of
management experience and
industry knowledge, he successfully
applied for the Wellington City
Council role in 2000, a job he
remained in until he took the leap
into his own business fulltime.
‘‘In the council roles I was
passionate about the work I was
doing and I really liked that it was
making a difference for the
community in a positive way, the
same can be said with what we do
now.
‘‘It’s one of the few industries
where we can actually make a
massive difference to people’s
lifestyles and properties in so many
ways – they get such value out of
really changing something to enjoy
it.
‘‘It may be developing a deck in
the right area where they can sit
out in the sun or a shelter or a space
where they can feel like it’s their
own little sanctuary, it’s a real,
positive vibe.’’
