NewsLetter
No.155
November 2014
From the Chair
Hi All,
At last month’s Q & A it seemed that some members had problems with a web
browser hijacker which was hard to get rid of, this also happened when I had a fake
security system pop up, sometimes you just have to take the computer to the Dr to get
rid of it.
With the hopefully changing warm and dry weather
coming up and the fire ban coming into place, just a
reminder as to what the smoke alarm can do for us.
Following the Dargaville Fire Brigade on Facebook it
seems that they have had call outs for these going off
as well as attending a rubbish fire.
This is the last Open day for the year as next month
we have our Christmas lunch. This year it will be at
the Central Hotel, check out the ad further in this
newsletter.
There has been talk that we may be moving into our new rooms early next year (don’t
hold your breath) as the move was to have been 2 Christmases ago. Waiting for the
finishing touches and the carpet installed.
Cheers
Dot
From the editor:
This will be the last newsletter for this year as I will be away early December, gosh hard to
believe that I need to say “Happy Christmas” to you all and it is only a few days into November!
But hopefully I will see lots of you at our Christmas Luncheon, come join us for fun and food.
Christmas cheer to all Heather and the team.

Course Co-ordinator’s Report November 2014
Members,
If you know the course you want then please phone the Tutor direct. Choose
a Tutor who is working on the day you are available.
Give me a call if you have queries we can chat and sort something, 439 4452.
The year is winding down now with just a few courses in progress. If you have something you would like to
master before the Christmas holidays please be in touch with me asap.
Some of you will be buying new smartphones before heading off for the Christmas break, come along and get set
up and use it before leaving home. The teenagers love to show us stuff especially when they can see that you
understand the Apps and just need pointing in the right direction, so be prepared to enjoy their knowledge. Two
or three lessons are all you need, phone me to book a tutor.
Don’t forget to be thinking of your Christmas messages, you can type a letter and insert pictures making a pretty
message, then save it and open an email to all your email friends, attach your saved letter and wait for all the replies. For those who are not on email then you can print your letter and send it off in a card saving a lot of
writing and sharing your year with your friends instead of the usual To…. And From…. Written in a card.
I love getting my Christmas letters each year.
Look forward to doing those last minute “help” sessions with those who contact us.
Cheers for now
Heather

Microsoft tempts buyers with slim, cheap smartphone model
Microsoft’s affordable flagship Lumia 830 is coming to New Zealand.
The device is the first Windows phone to use Spark’s new 700MHz spectrum, which
Microsoft says delivers ‘blistering’ fast 4G speeds in more places.
Steve Lewis, General Manager of Microsoft Devices in Australia and New Zealand said:
“With PureView imaging, wireless charging and a wealth of other great features, the Lumia 830 delivers the best innovations and experiences from our flagship smartphones at a more affordable price,
cementing Microsoft’s commitment to offer a competitive Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone for everyone.”
Spark says 4G is changing the way people use their phones, allowing them to do more online, in more
places, and at faster speeds. “It really is allowing them to unleash the potential of their phones and of
themselves.”
The Lumia 830 is the thinnest and lightest Lumia in the flagship range. The handset comes pre-loaded
with Windows Phone 8.1 including the new Lumia Denim update, and is packing a range of Lumia innovations including wireless charging, Optimised Image Stabilisation and SensorCore.
The Lumia 830 is expected to be available in New Zealand with Spark from 13 November.
Pure View Technology summarised:
It's a new camera technology that has been under development for over 5 years…
You have to at least double the resolution of a photo to actually see any convincing difference. Not to mention
that 5MP images are enough for any consumer; it's just the way you create them that needs revolutionising.
…that shoves 41 actual megapixels in a phone camera…
customers wanted a 3x zoom, but the problem was that optical zooms on a camera phone are near impossible
due to size, and they reduce the amount of light you can get onto the relatively small sensor anyway. So the answer was a zoom that you could do purely digitally.
…and uses "oversampling" to give you all the advantage of much larger pixels…
The PureView technology takes 41-megapixels' worth of information and condenses it down to 5MP. In essence,
7 individual pixels are collated together and combined into one "superpixel". This process means you benefit
from the same amount of light that would hit the much larger pixels of a 5MP sensor, if it fitted into the same
physical footprint. You benefit from solid low-light performance and at the same time you can remove noise and
digital artifacts from individual pixels through the oversampling process. It's all done at the raw sensor information level too, but its lightning quick utilising a dedicated processor to get the job done. The result is a super
crisp 5MP image that's much sharper, with greater detail than an ordinary 5MP sensor can achieve.
Any PureView-packing phone will supposedly be the "best possible camera phone" in its class. At any rate you
should be excited to see what PureView technology is going to bring to the Phone Camera market.
