Doing the workshop on internet banking using the Westpac site gave an insight into what the bank had on their web site. Further to my Printer power point in April, I was about to print something from a file and all I got was blank pages, at first I thought it may have been an error, but after 6 blank sheets, a few bleep, bleep words later I turned off the computer and headed for a shower, it was then it came to me, maybe the printer needed a clean as well. First thing in the morning that’s what I did turned on the printer and put it in clean mode - that did it. This month we hope to have Bruce Young, our Dargaville Undertaker, (provided he does not have a job on. They have been busy so far this year, they have even had to call on Reg Hart). I know it’s a scary thought, but to make things go smoothly and cheaper Bruce can answer the questions we all need to know. Having been through it myself I wished I had more information about the subject beforehand. There is a plan B in place. Cheers See you on the 15th Dot Welcome to new members, Dulcie Gates, Iris Tier, Margaretta Cherry and John Watson we hope you have an enjoyable time learning technology with us and hope to see you doing many courses. It was a bit quiet in the rooms this month but we did have some new members with Windows 8 needing to know how to get around the new operating system. Tech Group at the beginning of the month was busy and iPhone, Android devices continue to be popular. The Open Day with Kelly went well and we ran the Banking Workshop again, this is a good way to assess the mysteries and safety of doing your banking at home. It is easy to be able to see your transactions and you don’t have to wait till the end of the month for a statement. Contact me to book for the next Workshop date not yet set. I had an inspirational meeting the other day with a couple who had travelled from Whangarei to learn about SeniorNet. They come to Dargaville to do their shopping etc because they can park close to where they want to go. John is 88 and Joan is just a little younger, so they are not that active. Having resisted the age of technology all these years they have decided that now is the time to get started, John was wondering if he got set up now, would the equipment still be able to do for him what he wants in 12 years time when he would be 100, as he had been put off computers years ago because his friends had to replace their equipment each time an update came available and that was always within a year or two! Well I did liken it to his motor car which would probably still get him from A to B in 12 years time, but it wouldn’t have the ‘bells and whistles’ that the newer models have. They want to be able to email their family in different parts of the country and also UK, and Skype would be good. And he did have a lot of photos that needed attention, and for that matter his camera was old and he could do with a Smart Phone with camera too. But then he spoke about his passion for writing music for brass bands, he does this by hand—it takes him a lot longer now but whilst others use computer programmes both he and Joan believe that the sound is not as good, so he probably wouldn’t go down that track with his new computer. (I think that he probably will in a couple of years—what do you all think?) Anyway I hope to be as forward thinking as those two when I am 88 years old, I came home with a big smile on my face, thinking that is why I like SeniorNet, older people wanting to be involved with the here and now. Cheers for now Heather Phone 439 4452 or email [email protected] MasterCard NZ: Digital wallets lock in the benefits New Zealanders are increasingly shopping online, although many have yet to fully unlock the benefits of digital wallets... James Henderson (Computerworld New Zealand) interviews Peter Chisnall, Country Manager, MasterCard NZ. A recent MasterCard survey of shopping habits showed 75% of New Zealanders regularly shop online and two thirds are open to the idea of using a digital wallet. “Digital wallet platforms, including MasterCard’s MasterPass, have only been available in New Zealand for a short time but we’re already seeing uptake from early adopters. A digital wallet is a cloud-based payment form that can be used on a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. Once set up, the user’s credit, debit or prepaid card information is securely stored in one location, simplifying the process of completing a transaction by removing the need to enter payment and delivery details every time a purchase is made – which is particularly useful for those devices with smaller screens. As well as offering a fast and safer way to pay, digital wallets provide further experience enhancing benefits including the ability to input multiple loyalty and rewards scheme cards, shipping information and addresses, which can be easily selected during checkout. “New Zealand consumers are technologically savvy and have a real desire for a safe and efficient way to make digital payments," Chisnall adds."Using a MasterPass connected digital wallet is an easy way to make sure payment transactions are as safe and convenient as possible. "Guaranteeing users that their information is stored securely and safely through a legitimate service." Car Parking and your convenience. There is still a lot going on at the Complex where we are situated, as they are resealing the parking area.
