Tena koutou katoa KENAKENA SCHOOL FESTIVAL OF FUN THIS SATURDAY! By now you will be aware of the massive gala day being organised by the Kenakena School Parent Network, the Kenakena School Festival of Fun! You have been sent regular updates requesting your support of the festival and, therefore of your children’s school. The Festival of Fun is a recent initiative (from 2013) by the School-Parent Network to raise funds to support the programmes and resources that support your children’s learning. The money the school receives from the Ministry of Education through an annual Operations Grant is insufficient for running the range and quality of programmes we run at Kenakena. Once the operational costs of running the school and maintaining property are met, the remainder is what constitutes the bulk of funding for programmes and resources. So, please support the School Parent Network in the running of this event. Please do not be apathetic! We’re all working very hard to provide programmes and resources for your kids. Please get involved by offering your assistance or by responding to requests for support. SEE YOU THERE! NEWSLFLASH : 20 MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED OTAKI-KAPITI SCHOOLS KAPAHAKA FESTIVAL The Kenakena School Kapahaka Group performed very well at Monday’s festival. The group will be performing at the Festival of Fun on Saturday at 10.45am. Children in the group will need to meet at the school’s library at 10.15 to get changed into their costumes and prepare for the performance. They have received a newsletter in regard to this. CAULFIELD JUNIOR COLLEGE WELCOME POWHIRI Seventeen students and two teachers from Caulfield Junior College in Melbourne were welcomed to Kenakena School at a powhiri (Maori Welcome) this morning. Teachers Stefan Beal and Kristina and their students arrived in New Zealand yesterday and are being hosted by Kenakena Families. Most of the CJC children are staying with the families of the exchange buddies they hosted in Melbourne. Taylor and Samara call the CJC visitors lead by Hannah and Alyssa RUN-JUMP-THROW YEARS 5&6 INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS DAY Mal Hall managed Kenakena School’s participation in this event yesterday and sent me this very good report: “The year 5/6 Run Jump Throw Athletics event took place at the Paraparaumu Domain on Tuesday 28th October 2014. In between all of the off weather days we have had lately we had a glorious sunny day for the event. Kenakena took 30 students to the event from a range of 9-11 year old boys and girls. At year 5/6 the event is non-competitive and instead the students have target benchmarks to try and achieve for the following disciplines: Sprint, hurdles, vortex throw, shot putt, long jump and high jump. Reaching the minimum standard was awarded with 1 point, beating the minimum standard was awarded with 2 points and excelling beyond was awarded with 3 points. Campbell Reynolds and Isaac Hughes were the standout individuals on the day by achieving maximum points across all 6 disciplines. Future decathletes in the making… Our major team success was in the inter school relay where we had 6 students, a boy and a girl from each age group compete. This was extremely competitive and really got the crowd going as the athletes took to the track. Kenakena dominated from the start with each runner performing magnificently on their individual run and with swift changeovers of the baton ensuring we romped home first by a long shot! Congratulations to our relay team of Amelia Feaunati, Isaac Hughes, Manaaki Patea, Fraser Wallace, Bridie Webb and Genevieve Kunz. You guys did us proud. A special thanks to our year 7 boys Mitchell Burns and Harry Hargreaves, and all the parent helpers that transported or assisted on the day.” TEACHER ONLY DAY NEXT WEEK A reminder that our annual School Review and Planning Day takes place on Friday, November 14. It is on this day that we review our 2014 operations and begin the planning process for 2015. This year our focus is on reviewing learning projects and professional development and focussing on where these areas will go in 2015. By beginning this process now and devoting un-interrupted time to it, we can begin next year very well prepared. Please keep your children at home on that day. For more information on teacher only days, check out our website www.kenakena.school.nz EARLY ARRIVALS The time prior to 8.30 am is important classroom preparation time for teachers. Please ensure your children do not arrive at school prior to 8.30am. This is also an important safety consideration as school staff are not responsible for the safety of your children prior to this time. 2015 ENROLMENTS We are in the process of planning for 2015. If you have a child starting school as a five-year-old next year and haven’t yet informed us, please contact Lynda at the school office to let us know. If you have friends, workmates, relatives or acquaintances who are intending to enrol their children at Kenakena in 2015, please encourage them to get in touch.
