KENAKENA SCHOOL FESTIVAL OF FUN!
Wow! What a day!
Last Saturday’s ‘Festival of Fun’ gala day was a fantastic event for our school community.
Parents, school staff and children contributed to the organization and success of the day by
working together to create a fabulous occasion that the community could enjoy, whilst also
raising funds to support school programmes and resources to benefit your children.
The organizing committee put in many hours and directed their individual knowledge, skills
and strengths collectively to make the day the success that it was. Thank you to you all.
At this stage it looks as if the financial gain was around $19000.
GOOD NEWS!
Whaea Deena Ashby received the Wellington Netball Region Volunteer of the Year award for
2014 at an awards ceremony last week. Congratulations Deena!
Deena has had a very long association with netball organisation and coaching at Kenakena
School for many years as her four daughters have moved through our school. This award
gives due recognition to the countless hours of work Deena has put in to organise and
promote netball at Kenakena School and in Kapiti. Kenakena’s ongoing success in junior
netball over many years has been influenced by the culture of respect, competiveness and
enjoyment displayed by our kids on the netball court.
SAD NEWS
On Tuesday morning we received the news that ex Kenakena Student (Year 8, 2013) Te Rehia
McGhie had died in a motor vehicle accident on Monday afternoon.
Te Rehia was a student at Kenakena from Years 4 to 8. She was a member of our Kapahaka
Group and a kai karanga for our powhiri (Maori Welcome Ceremonies). She was proud of her
whakapapa (heritage) and was proudly documenting it last year. She was learning Te Reo
Maori from her mother and had a goal to be a Maori language teacher. Te Rehia’s family
moved to Levin late last year and Te Rehia had been attending Waiopehu College at the time
of her death.
Te Rehia possessed a quiet ‘mana’ and dignity and her little brother Tumanako thought the
world of her. Her parents Harriet and Andrew are distraught at the loss of their daughter and
have taken her home to Tolaga Bay where she will be buried at Hauiti Marae tomorrow.
Te Rehia (centre) leads our Caulfield Junior College visitors into the school at the powhiri in 2012.
E hine Te Rehia. Kua hoki mai koe, ki te u kai po

CAULFIELD JUNIOR COLLEGE VISIT
The sixteen students from our Melbourne sister school, Caulfield Junior College depart for
home today after spending a successful week at Kenakena. Following the powhiri (welcome)
last Thursday the CJC kids did some harakeke (flax weaving) with Deena Ashby, spent the
day on Kapiti Island and walked to the summit (Tuteremoana), visited Pataka Museum in
Porirua, our national museum Te Papa Tongarewa. They also spent some time in Kenakena
classrooms and enjoyed a range of experiences and activities organised by their host
families.
It has been a pleasure hosting the CJC students and their accompanying teachers Stefan and
Kristina, who liaised with Kenakena Assistant Principal Tina Buchanan to organise the
exchange programme. Ka pai! Tino pai!
After 12 years, the student exchange programme between our two schools is as strong as
ever.
Our Kai Karanga, Hannah and Alyssa prepare to receive the call to bring our Caulfield Junior College
guests into Kenakena at last week’s welcome.
EARLY ARRIVALS
The time prior to 8.30 am is important classroom preparation time for teachers. Please ensure
your children do not arrive at school prior to 8.30am. This is also an important safety
consideration as school staff are not responsible for the safety of your children prior to this
time.
TEACHER ONLY DAY TOMORROW
A reminder that our annual School Review and Planning Day takes place tomorrow. It is on
this day that we review our 2014 operations and begin the planning process for 2015.
This year our focus is on reviewing learning projects and professional development and on
focussing where these areas will go in 2015.
By beginning this process now and devoting un-interrupted time to it, we can begin next year
very well prepared.
For more information on teacher only days, check out our website
www.kenakena.school.nz.
Please keep your children at home tomorrow.
2015 ENROLMENTS
We are in the process of planning for 2015. If you have a child starting school as a five-yearold next year and haven’t yet informed us, please contact Lynda at the school office to let us
know.
If you have friends, workmates, relatives or acquaintances who are intending to enrol their
children at Kenakena in 2015, please encourage them to get in touch.

KENAKENA SCHOOL FESTIVAL OF FUN
Wow, what an amazing day we had on Saturday at the Festival of Fun! This event would not have been
possible without the fantastic support of the families, children and staff of Kenakena. Thank you to all those
who contributed in some way to this event, we couldn't have done it without you.
Thanks goes out to those who volunteered prior to the event with organising supplies, sorting items and much
more, this help before the event assisted greatly.
We would also like to say thank you to all those who helped out on the day, who set up, cooked food, ran a
stall or a game, or packed down afterwards. You were amazing! We greatly appreciated your help on the big
day.
Above all we just want to say a HUGE thank you to all the families of Kenakena, your support made the
Festival of Fun the success that it was.
A big thank you also goes out to the amazing sponsors from within our community who supported this event.
