Description and Use
OptiSperse APFe is a unique liquid blend of two
specialized polymeric dispersants including blends
with a boiler alkalinity builder. The two polymeric
dispersants are the GE HTP and SCP polymers.
The polymers in OptiSperse APFe are multifunctional, and prevent deposits through their ability
to:
1. Form complex incoming feedwater contaminants such as calcium and magnesium keeping them soluble in the boiler water;
2. Distort crystal growth reducing the size of any
particles that are formed;
3. Alter the surface charge of the suspended
particles and the metal surfaces, reducing the
particle-particle attraction and the attraction
between particles and the boiler tube walls.
This results in significantly reduced scale potential
and cleaner heat transfer surfaces, especially
during upsets in control or variations in feedwater
hardness. As shown in Figure 1 below, the SCP
polymer used for hardness control has no
tendency for creating polymer-hardness fouling
during periods of treatment underfeed.
The HTP (“High-Temperature Polymer”) dispersant
is a unique polyphosphonate that has proven in
hundreds of successful applications in boilers operating up to 1800 psig to be one of industry’s
most effective iron oxide dispersants. The GE SCP
polymer (“Synthetic Carboxylated Polymer”) is a
proven boiler dispersant and hardness complexing agent, and is highly effective in preventing
hardness-based deposits, and in transporting calcium and magnesium contaminants through the
boiler in soluble form.
OptiSperse APFe is designed for application as an
“All Polymer” internal treatment program to prevent the formation of metal oxide and hardnessbased deposits on internal boiler heat transfer
surfaces. It may also be applied as a supplemental
dispersant in combination with phosphate and
chelant-based internal treatment programs.

As shown in Figure 2, the GE HTP polymer provides
superior iron deposit control versus commonly
applied carboxylated HTP polymers that have
been evaluated against by GE. It is important to
note that the striking iron deposit control performance gap between HTP and standard polymers
could not be overcome by increasing the dosage
of the standard polymers. Even at multiples of
three and four times the level of HTP, the standard
polymers could not match performance on iron of
HTP.
Dilution - OptiSperse APFe may be fed neat or
diluted to any convenient strength with good
quality condensate, demineralized water, or feedwater.
Equipment - Chemical feed should be through a
304 or 316 stainless steel injection nozzle.

Treatment and Feeding Requirements
Feed Point - In systems with high-purity feedwater (reverse osmosis or demineralized-quality
make-up), the recommended feed point for
OptiSperse APFe is directly into the boiler. In softened water systems, it is recommended that the
product be fed to the boiler feedwater downstream of the boiler feed pumps.
Feed Rate - Proper treatment levels for OptiSperse
APFe depend on many factors specific to a given
installation. The product should be used in
accordance with the control procedures that GE
establishes for a specific application.
