Projecting Possibilities for Writers:
Designing Units of Study
GRADES K–5
Some of the most common questions teachers ask about teaching writing are “How do I decide what
to teach? How do I ensure that my mini-lessons fit the needs of my actual classroom of students?
How do I increase the pool of possibilities for what I might teach in a conference?” This practical,
hands-on workshop will engage teachers in a process for designing writing workshop units of study
that are responsive to the needs of their students.
Matt will start by building background knowledge around key concepts of writing workshop that
are necessary for creating a unit of study. Participants will practice reading like a writer in order
to improve their skill at noticing what authors do. This will allow participants to more easily see
teaching possibilities for students as they study a stack of mentor texts. Participants examine the
role of mentor texts to ensure that mentor texts they are using match what students are actually
making.
Later in the workshop, Matt will take teachers through the process of creating an actual unit of study. By going through the process for one
unit, teachers will have the skills needed to create any unit of study. Matt will guide teachers through the process by helping them study a
stack of texts, envision teaching possibilities, set primary and secondary goals, and project a sequence of possible mini-lessons.
Finally, participants will have time to start developing a unit of study they will use with their actual students. Matt will have materials for
teachers to use for a variety of units of study appropriate to a wide range of grade levels, so teachers will be able to select a unit that matches
their needs. Teachers may also bring a stack of mentor texts with them to the workshop to use to create their own unit of study.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Define the difference between projecting and planning
• Model a practical process for designing a unit of study in writing workshop
• Create flexible units that are responsive to the needs of individual classes of students
• Understand the importance of using a stack of mentor texts as the starting point for a unit of study
• Explore the role of reading like a teacher of writing in order to envision teaching possibilities
• Appreciate immersion as a crucial phase in a genre-based unit of study
• Understand the importance of choice of genre and strategies for designing non-genre specific units
• Incorporate district and state curricular goals in a unit of study
