SRC Community Club’s 52nd Annual Turkey Dinner November 7 The SRC Community Club’s 52nd annual Turkey Dinner is planned for Friday, November 7, 2014! Please join us for a turkey dinner feast including turkey & dressing, potatoes, green beans, jello salad, cranberry sauce, dessert, and a beverage at the SRC Cafeteria. Dinner will be served from 5:00 until 7:30pm, with dine-in and individual to-go meals served in the SRC Cafeteria and family style re-heat and serve available for quick and easy pick-up at Rock Creek Baptist Church from 4:30-5:30pm. FAMILY TO-GO STYLE TICKETS MUST BE RECEIVED BY NOVEMBER 4TH. The annual Turkey Dinner is the Community Club’s largest fundraiser. It takes everyone in the SRC community to make the event the success that it has become. 4th-8th grade students sell tickets while their teachers do their part in encouraging their classes to be in first place so they can wear the lucky turkey hat! Parents and other SRC boosters are completing their volunteer forms, donating $5 to off-set the cost of jello-salad ingredients, serving shift at the event, and advertising with a yard sign. We are so lucky to have the best turkey bakers and pumpkin pie and chocolate cake makers in Pottawatomie County amongst us! This year, we are thrilled to include a silent auction to the evening's festivities! Each grade will contribute a themed basket that will be auctioned off. This will be a fun way for the younger classes especially to become involved in the Turkey Dinner! No need to be present to win. To encourage students to sell tickets and turn in jello-salad money and volunteer forms, incentives are in place to promote involvement. Every 4th-8th grade student who sells a ticket is eligible to participate in the very popular dodge ball tournament held the Friday before Thanksgiving break- along with concession tickets and the ever coveted “back in the game” pass are awarded as the students bring in ticket money. The class with the highest percentage of returned volunteer forms receives a pizza party. The biggest reward, however, is the ability to assist our school, our teachers and our students in making SRC an exciting, learningfriendly environment. In the past, the profits from the dinner have been used to fund a variety of school activities, such as Red Ribbon Week, to large capital purchases, such as smart boards in the classrooms, to student requests, such as balls for tetherball and basketball, and playground picnic tables. The SRC Community Club appreciates all the support received from our students, teachers, and the SRC community. Thank you for all you do! 3/4 Basketball News Flu Season is here! The 3/4 grade basketball teams participated in the Justice Basketball Tournament the week of October 20-24th. The girls placed 3rd in the tournament. The boys placed 1st in the tournament!!! Congrats to both teams!!!! The next game will be on Nov. 12th against Asher. The game will be at 9:30 a.m. All the school will be invited to attend. Please consider the flu vaccine for your child and your family. The flu vaccine can be obtained through your primary physician, many pharmacies and the Health Dept. and are covered by insurance. The flu vaccine offers you increased protection from getting the flu. Also remember, that good hand washing and always coughing or sneezing into your elbow help to keep you and those around you healthier. Coach S. Brooks What’s 6B Been Up To? has had an awesome start to this year. We have a total of 21 students with two new students. We have just finished a really cool book called Tuck Everlasting. After we read the book we watched the awesome movie. If you haven’t read the book or have not seen the movie, you really need to! Also we are going to be reading Harry Potter this week. That should be a whole lot of fun! 6B has also been busy selling Turkey Dinner tickets. If you need any, just call a 6B student! We are also collecting canned foods for the food drive. We are trying to reduce the number of intercom interruptions. Page 2 If your child is sick, please do not send them to school. Oklahoma’s Promise is a program for students that will help pay for their college tuition if the family income is $50,000 or less. Students must sign up in the 8th, 9th, or 10th grade and meet certain academic requirements. They also must stay in control outside of the classroom by avoiding trouble, like drugs, alcohol and gangs. There are additional requirements to get and keep the scholarship while in college. NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER A Note from the Counselor, Mrs. Cooper Red Ribbon Week Proves to be a Success STEM Day 2014 at Gordon Cooper Technology Center Thank you to parents, students, teachers and staff for continuing to make Red Ribbon Week a success! A special THANK YOU to Kasey Dean and the Absentee Shawnee Tribe for all of the prizes each student and teacher received. Your generosity is greatly appreciated! I also would like to thank Kasey, GateWay to Prevention and the Shawnee Police Department for your presentation to our 6th—8th graders. You all did a fantastic job! Select students in the 8th grade attended Gordon Cooper Technology Center’s STEM Day 2013: Design Your Future on October 28th. Twenty students that are interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) had the opportunity to explore various careers that STEM education has to offer. Various professionals held workshops for the students and were able to give insight to what they do and what education they obtained to be able to go into their respected fields. Agricultural Science, Cyber Security, Alternative Energy, Health Science, Rocketry, and various fields of Engineering were some of the workshops that students were able to attend. Thank you Susan Brooks for doing such an amazing job with RRW all these years. It is a lot of work and I appreciate all your help and support this year! I also would like to thank the SRC Community Club! Without your support and funding, RRW would not be possible. We appreciate you continuing to see the importance of teaching kids to live a drug free lifestyle. At this time, it is unknown who the winners are for the Door Decorating Contest and Student Participation Contest. However, thank you so much for working so hard in both contests, students and teachers! I also will announce how much money was raised for the Rock Creek Baptist Church Shoe Ministry by November 7th. Madeline Motley, Maddie Curtis, Hannah Gillespie, Hannah Todd, Emily Hudson, Payton McNeil, Gabel Ledbetter, Blaedn Sherrill, Jayden Shafer, Brandon Eropkin, Caylin Chlouber, Kristin Haddox, Jack Gentry, Aaron Ellis, Cade Mikish, William Ellis, Tyler Bingham, Michael Gale, and Ben Spencer attended STEM Day. These students represented SRC very well and I am proud of the leadership that was shown by each of them in the workshops. Career Expo for 8th Grade Students I apologize to all 8th Grade students and parents, we will not be attending the Career Expo at Gordon Cooper Technology Center this year. Students will be attending a play with Mrs. Walker on that day. I take full responsibility for the mix up in scheduling. However, I am in contact with Donna Stone from GCTC to make alternate plans for our students. When the details are finalized I will let teachers and students know as soon as possible.
