(John 2:17) Imagine a church adorned with marble columns, bursting with colors, gold ceilings, marble floors, walls covered with New Testament scenes, a mosaic of Mary and the saints, and a seven-meter high statue of Jesus Christ. This is the Lateran Basilica in Rome. This building isn’t just visually stunning; it has a rich history as well. As the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, it is considered the pope’s church in his capacity as bishop of Rome. The emperor Constantine donated the land for it to Pope Melchiades around a.d. 311, and had a church built there for him. Until the construction of St. Peter’s in the sixteenth century, the popes lived in a residence built on the site as well. Over time, the Lateran Basilica has faced many hardships. It has been sacked, damaged by more than one fire, and nearly destroyed by an earthquake. But even in these challenges, this historic church, which is a symbol for bishops everywhere, can teach us. Like the Lateran, the universal Church is both stunningly beautiful and has faced many challenges. It has been persecuted, and some of its members and leaders have made mistakes that have inflicted grievous wounds on it. Many bishops have handled their responsibilities well; some have not. None of this should surprise us. The Church is made up of imperfect people, and bishops are no exception. Like us, they face temptation, and so they need support. As our brothers in Christ, they need our prayers, our encouragement, and the witness of our lives. Try something different today. Write a letter or e-mail to your bishop! Tell him you’re praying for him. Rather than asking something of him, just encourage him, and lift him up to the Lord. “Thank you, Father, for those you have called to be bishops. Bless them and protect them. Together with them, we all pray, ‘Lead us not into temptation.’ ” MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH, 2014 8:30 am - Morning Prayer 4:45 pm - Rosary & Divine Mercy Chaplet 7:00 pm - RCIA 7:00 pm - K of C Planning Meeting 7:15 pm - Christ Centered Yoga TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH, 2014 Remembrance Day WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12TH, 2014 8:00 am - Rosary / 8:30 am - Mass 6:15 pm - (9:00) choir practice 7:00 pm - Justice & Peace Meeting 7:00 pm - Baptism Prep 8:00 pm - Adoration THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH, 2014 8:00 am - Rosary / 8:30 am - Mass 6:30 pm - (5:00) choir practice 8:00 pm - (11:00) choir practise FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH, 2014 8:30 am - Morning Prayer 2:00 pm - Mass @ Primrose Chateau SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH, 2014 4:00 pm - Reconciliation 5:00 pm - Mass 7:00 pm - Youth Group SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH, 2014 9:00 am - Mass 11:00 am - Mass Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast 12:15 pm - 1st Reconciliation class CWL NOVEMBER BAKE SALE Cupcakes, cookies, cakes galore, Muffins, pastries, pies and more Loaves, squares and candies too, Will make this event exciting for you. Please advise us of your prayer needs and let the power of our parish’s collective prayer support you. A parish united in prayer creates a mighty power! Let us pray for the families and communities who are grieving lost sisters, daughters, mothers and friends who are missing or who have been murdered in this nation. Lord God, grant eternal rest to those who have died, and healing and protection to those who remain missing. Lead all of us to end the injustice, poverty and racism that so often underlie the violence faced by Aboriginal women. Let us pray that those who have died in the service of their country will always be remembered for the sacrifice they made to preserve our freedom. Let us pray that God's people, who proclaim that death has been conquered in Christ, may be active in defending His gift of life. Let us pray for couples who were married. We pray for Mitchell Lysak & Jamie Lapitsky. May the gift of their love for one another bear witness to the great gift of God’s love for the world. Let us pray for growth, love and joy to be the fruit of our response to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Let us pray that the sick be healed, the dying be comforted, and their caregivers be renewed in spirit. We pray for Kira Chestolowski, Lorinda Abanes, Maurice Tremblay, Ramona Dahl, Garry Woytas, Adam German, Patricia Jennison, Jackie Price, Alyssa Noonan, Jackie Perreault, Ken Meyer, Sophie Zeljeznak, Amase Lafontaine. May they experience the healing presence of the Lord. Let us pray for those who have died and for those who are mourning. We remember Margaret Gutenberg, mother of Phyllis Henschel. We remember Jim Ashcroft, brother of Lee & Anne Ashcroft. We remember John German, Daniel Brennan, on the anniversary of their deaths, fathers of Marianne & Hugh Brennan. We remember everyone in The Book of Remembrance. May they experience the fullness of peace in heaven. Loving Father, we ask that you hear our prayers and help us to continue to grow in faith. We pray through your Son Jesus Christ. Amen. LOST: A coat has been mistakenly taken from the parish fall supper. Please call 934.2158 if you have it. Thank you.
