Psalm 46:2-3,5-6,8-9 , 1 Corinthians 3:9-11,16-17 , John 2:13-22
Zeal for your house will consume me. (John 2:17)
Imagine a church adorned with marble columns, bursting with colors, gold ceilings,
marble floors, walls covered with New Testament scenes, a mosaic of Mary and the
saints, and a seven-meter high statue of Jesus Christ. This is the Lateran Basilica in
Rome.
This building isn’t just visually stunning; it has a rich history as well. As the cathedral
of the Diocese of Rome, it is considered the pope’s church in his capacity as bishop of Rome. The
emperor Constantine donated the land for it to Pope Melchiades around a.d. 311, and had a church
built there for him. Until the construction of St. Peter’s in the sixteenth century, the popes lived in
a residence built on the site as well.
Over time, the Lateran Basilica has faced many hardships. It has been sacked, damaged by more
than one fire, and nearly destroyed by an earthquake. But even in these challenges, this historic
church, which is a symbol for bishops everywhere, can teach us. Like the Lateran, the universal
Church is both stunningly beautiful and has faced many challenges. It has been persecuted, and
some of its members and leaders have made mistakes that have inflicted grievous wounds on it.
Many bishops have handled their responsibilities well; some have not.
None of this should surprise us. The Church is made up of imperfect people, and bishops are no
exception. Like us, they face temptation, and so they need support. As our brothers in Christ, they
need our prayers, our encouragement, and the witness of our lives.
Try something different today. Write a letter or e-mail to your bishop! Tell him you’re praying for
him. Rather than asking something of him, just encourage him, and lift him up to the Lord.
“Thank you, Father, for those you have called to be bishops. Bless them and protect them. Together with them, we all pray, ‘Lead us not into temptation.’ ”

Let Us Pray ……
Prayer remains a constant that unites and draws us closer together. Please advise us of
your prayer needs and let the power of our parish’s collective prayer support you.
A parish united in prayer creates a mighty power!

Let us pray for the families and communities who are grieving lost sisters,
daughters, mothers and friends who are missing or who have been murdered in this
nation. Lord God, grant eternal rest to those who have died, and healing and protection to those
who remain missing. Lead all of us to end the injustice, poverty and racism that so often underlie the violence faced by Aboriginal women.

Let us pray that those who have died in the service of their country will always be remembered for the sacrifice they made to preserve our freedom.

Let us pray that God's people, who proclaim that death has been conquered in Christ, may be
active in defending His gift of life.

Let us pray for couples who were married. We pray for Mitchell Lysak & Jamie Lapitsky.
May the gift of their love for one another bear witness to the great gift of God’s love for the
world.

Let us pray for growth, love and joy to be the fruit of our response to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.

Let us pray that the sick be healed, the dying be comforted, and their caregivers be renewed in
spirit. We pray for Kira Chestolowski, Lorinda Abanes, Maurice Tremblay, Ramona Dahl,
Garry Woytas, Adam German, Patricia Jennison, Jackie Price, Alyssa Noonan, Jackie Perreault, Ken Meyer, Sophie Zeljeznak, Amase Lafontaine. May they experience the healing
presence of the Lord.

Let us pray for those who have died and for those who are mourning. We remember Margaret Gutenberg, mother of Phyllis Henschel. We remember Jim Ashcroft, brother of Lee &
Anne Ashcroft. We remember John German, Daniel Brennan, on the anniversary of their
deaths, fathers of Marianne & Hugh Brennan. We remember everyone in The Book of Remembrance. May they experience the fullness of peace in heaven.

Loving Father, we ask that you hear our prayers and help us to continue to grow in faith. We
pray through your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Walking With Our Sisters commemorative art event at Wanuskewin Heritage Park in
Saskatoon is in need of support, volunteers and donations. Find out more about this event,
which runs until Nov. 21, at www.wanuskewin.com/calendar_event/walking-with-oursisters/ Those interested in helping out can inquire about volunteering at the site itself, or on the
Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/saskatoonwwos or by e-mailing: [email protected]
There is presently an urgent need for men to assist as “firekeepers,” as well as other volunteers. Fundraising is underway to help cover accommodation, meal and travel costs for families of
missing and murdered women, to cover the cost of a deaf interpreter, etc. (The Facebook page includes a link to an online fundraising auction being held to offset some of the expenses of the
Walking With Our Sisters event.) Other needs include: hides for drum-making workshop (moose,
elk or deer), tobacco for ceremonies, firewood, and food for the men who are volunteering around
the clock to keep the fire going.
Marriage Preparation—Growing the Good Seed:
Pope Francis speaks of how in every life there are weeds and thorns but the good seed can still
grow! The seeds we plant at marriage preparation are good so how can we nurture them? How
can we improve and recast our current marriage preparation programs? If you are involved in
marriage preparation in your parish, please consider lending your experience and wisdom to a
gathering taking place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, November 15 at the Cathedral of the Holy
Family. The afternoon will give those who are leading marriage prep and those who are simply
interested in the state of marriage in our diocese a chance to discuss the content and process of
marriage preparation, and brainstorm ways of improving the quality of the experience for young
couples. Contact Blake Sittler [email protected] or (306) 659-5834 for more
information. (The diocesan Office of Marriage and Family Life is supported by the Bishop’s A nnual Appeal)
