Our Church is a center for spiritual growth, where
positive attitudes are developed, where good people
become better, where hurts are healed, where lessons are
learned, where friendships are developed, where marriages
restless find peace, where love is alive, where God is
understood, where the Holy Spirit leads, and where Jesus

God and Father of us all, in Jesus,
your Son and our Savior, you have
made us your sons and daughters
in the family of the Church.
May your grace and love
help our families in every part of
the world be united to one another
in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy
Family, with the aid of your Holy
Spirit, guide all families, especially
those most troubled, to be homes of
communion and prayer and to
always seek your truth and live in
your love. Through Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray
for us!
Calling all friends, calling all friends. St. Joseph the
Worker Group needs your help. On the 1st Saturday of
each month, we gather on the back porch of the rectory
around 9:00am. We then disburse around the parish
grounds doing work that needs to be done to make St.
Helena’s the best place it can be. You don’t need to be
a professional in anything…you just need to be able to
pitch in and help do the things that need to be done.
Sometimes we are painting, sometimes we are
cleaning, sometimes we are doing floors.
As you can see there is always something that has to
be done and we need volunteers to help us get these
projects done. Please mark your calendars for the 1st
Saturday of every month to come to your home away
from home and help us to continue to be a place where
people will want to come. We usually work from
9:00am till 3:00pm. You don’t have to stay the whole
time. If you can give an hour or two that would be
great! But I will tell you this…there will be coffee in the
AM and for the people who stay all day, we will feed
you lunch. If you have any questions, call the rectory
and leave a message for Dave Nguyen. He will get back
to you within 24 hours.
Thanksgiving Baskets 2014
If you are in need of a Thanksgiving Basket, please fill out this slip and return to Sister Sophie
by November 15th. Baskets are arriving on November 23rd at 3:00pm near the Lower School Parking
Lot. You must pick up the basket at this time….no phone calls will be made…please be there on
time.

Greeting & Penitential Rite
Plan to join us on Thursday, November
27 for our annual Thanksgiving Day Mass
at 9:00am in the Lower Church. We will
have a special Blessing of Bread during
Mass and distribution of bread after Mass.
------------------------------------------------th
After the hymn, with us standing, the priest and
the faithful make the sign of the cross and the priest
greets the faithful, usually with the traditional, "The
Lord be with you." At this point the priest may also
give a brief introduction to the Catholic Mass of the
day.
During the penitential rite, we reflect on our sins and
ask God to forgive them. The most common
invocation is, "Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy." This is a general absolution and
cannot replace going to the sacrament of confession.
We cannot receive the
Sacrament of Communion if did not confess a mortal
sin beforehand. At this point the priest may also
perform the blessing and sprinkling of water, to
remind us of the actions and promises of baptism.

We celebrate today the Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome because it is the head
and mother church of all churches in the world. On the façade of the basilica there is an inscription in Latin
which reads, “the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world.” One might think St. Peter’s
Basilica is the head of all the churches but in fact it is the Basilica of St. John Lateran. Every bishop has a
cathedral and the Pope’s cathedral is the Basilica of St. John Lateran not the Basilica of St. Peter.
You may ask “Why is the Basilica of St. John Lateran the Pope’s cathedral and not the Basilica of St.
Peter since he lives next to St. Peter's Basilica?” History gives us the answer. In the early centuries
Christianity was outlawed in Rome and many Christians in Rome suffered martyrdom. The Emperor
Constantine converted to Christianity and the famous Edict of Milan in 313 AD allowed Christians to
practice their religion in public. Constantine had been given the palace in Rome that belonged to the
Laterani and after his conversion to Christianity he gave it to the Pope. The Lateran Palace was then adapted
to become a church and was dedicated on November 9th 324 and the Pope then lived in the Lateran Palace,
as it was called, for the next 1000 years and the basilica was his cathedral. It was first called the Basilica of
the Savior but later was also dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist and so it acquired
the name Basilica of St. John Lateran. When the Papacy transferred to Avignon for about a century, the
condition of the Lateran deteriorated so much that when the Papacy returned to Rome the Pope lived in two
other locations before finally settling adjacent to St. Peter’s Basilica where he now lives.
During the month of November, we remember all those who were buried from our parish in this
past year and whose names are inscribed in the Book of Deceased, those whose pictures you put on the
tables in front of the Pieta and the ones whose memory we carry in our hearts. All Souls Envelopes will be
on the Altar for the month of November.
November 9th, will be our Health/Flu Shot Clinic in the School Hall from 9:00am until 2:00pm.
Flu shots will be available beginning at 9:00am. We have about 17 different agencies offering information
to you. Stop over to the school hall after Mass on Sunday and get information you have always wanted but
was afraid to ask. Please enter the doors on 5th Street near the flag pole.
I thank you for your donations to the annual block collection. To date, we received $9989.00. If
you did not return your census cards, please do so by the end of November.
I would like to thank Joanne Callahan Murphy, Maureen Callahan Castor, Irene Callahan
Buchert and Michael Callahan for their donation of $100.00 in memory of Mary Yhost.
Finally, I remind you to cut out the prayer for the World Meeting of Families found on page 2 of the
bulletin. We will pray the prayer each week after communion. Thanks for reading and have a good week!
