Dear Friends,
8TH GRADERS DISCUSSING A
MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
“Our teachers make it fun, something I thought
learning could never be. I could feel the change.
I began to enjoy learning, and began to do better
at school. Without Summer on the Hill, I wouldn’t
be who I am today.” – SOH’s 2014 Salutatorian
With academic enrichment and test prep classes,
guidance on school and college choices, and
a supportive, engaging community, SOH is
developing the enormous potential of hundreds
of NYC students.
Since 1994, SOH’s enrichment and guidance
program has had a tremendous impact on
education in the Bronx, Washington Heights,
and Harlem. We have made strong connections
with 1,300 students -- from the 3rd grader who
said, “Thank you for teaching us stuff we didn’t
know!” to the freshman at the University of
Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, who wrote:
We couldn’t expand educational opportunities
for deserving students without the support of the
Horace Mann School,
our wonderful donors,
and a superb faculty
and staff. With deep
appreciation for your
support,
“If it were not for this program, individuals from
underprivileged backgrounds such as myself
would not have the opportunity to attend
prestigious schools.”
Sincerely,
John P. McIvor, Ph.D.

At SOH, I encountered
persons who believed in
me, and realized I was
capable of more than I
thought. SOH’s learning
environment
fostered
my academic skills while
it encouraged respect,
self-worth,
empathy,
and the opportunity to realize my potential.
Consequently, I became a diligent student,
and with SOH’s guidance on the independent
school application process, I attained wonderful
accomplishments. I was accepted to all four
schools to which I applied, and chose the
Spence School. In 7th grade, I entered the
Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented
Youth (CTY) Talent Search. Over the summer,
I enjoyed my first CTY course, Introduction to
Biomedical Sciences, at Franklin and Marshall
College. In August, I was delighted to learn
that I had been selected as a cohort 14 Jack
Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholar. Thank
you, SOH, for your enrichment classes and
guidance!

THE WHARTON SCHOOL AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
When talking about SOH,
these words come to mind:
guidance,
leadership,
diligence,
enrichment,
friendship -- qualities and
opportunities that SOH
has helped me cultivate
during my years with this
wonderful program.
As a student, I witnessed the unity that SOH
instills in its participants, while providing
genuine academic and social benefits. Without
SOH’s guidance and help, I would not have
been able to attend Cardinal Hayes High
School, where I began to fulfill my potential as
a student, athlete, and individual.
Attending SOH was a delight! I remember teachers
who were ideal role models -- and the joy that I felt
each morning, knowing I would spend another
day at SOH. That joy was the reason I applied for
the mentor position as soon as I was eligible, and
served as a mentor for three summers.
I’ve now started my freshman year at the
University of Pennsylvania, but was glad to
spend my last summer before college as
a mentor in SOH’s 2014 summer program.
Without SOH, I would not be the diligent and
dignified young man that I am today, and I
thank SOH for all that it does.
STUDENT VOICES
I joined SOH as an excited
3rd grader who found the
curriculum challenging
and the days exhausting. But it was worth
the effort because the friends, teachers, and
experiences that I gained changed my life.
Through SOH, I won admission to the De
La Salle Academy, an independent school
that challenged me beyond my public school.
My decision to leave public school was
bittersweet: on enrolling at an independent
school, I had to leave SOH. However, my SOH
experiences gave me a drive for better things.
After graduating from De La Salle Academy, I
attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart.
I excelled because of an outstanding
foundation: my love of learning was rooted in
my SOH experience. In high school, I deeply
wanted to give back to SOH and volunteered
to be a summer mentor to students, because
I had admired my own mentors. As a role
model who helped guide students, socially
and academically, I found the experience so
rewarding that I mentored at SOH for three
summers.
SOH’s SAT classes, college visits, and advice
helped me through the college process, as did
the encouragement to apply for a scholarship.
I am using that scholarship for expenses, now
that I am attending the State University at
Albany to study business administration.
BRANDON MERHAI
BRONX HS OF SCIENCE
Nine years ago, when
I began SOH, I had no
idea how much my life
would be shaped by the
program. As any child
would, I initially dreaded
the idea of giving up my
summers and Saturdays
for school. After the first
week, I realized that SOH is a place where
everyone fits in and belongs. The people I met
years ago are in my life to this day. And so the
summers quickly flew past, especially when we
had overnights at John Dorr Nature Lab.
As a mentor for two years who is now preparing
to go to college, I want the summers to
last even longer. I’ve learned so much at
SOH: I’ve become a better student, but more
importantly, a better person. As I face the
college admissions process, I feel confident
that I will find success. Whatever success I find,
it will be a result of my time at SOH and the
family I met there.

The fourth Ann Kies Arnold Citizenship/
Scholarship Award was given to Daniella Kwubiri
at SOH’s 2014 commencement ceremony. The
award was established in memory of Ann
Arnold, who was president of the Oaklawn
Foundation and a strong supporter of SOH.
Daniella, a 9th grader at Equality HS, was
recognized for her exemplary character
and commitment to SOH’s values: excellent
attendance, academic achievement, respect
for her teachers, and a caring attitude towards
her peers.
“In language arts, we read and analyzed
poetry. Ms. Fonseca also had us teach
lessons, because when we move on to our
careers, we will have to plan and present
things to our co-workers. This was a great
way to prepare us for our future. Then
again, that’s what Summer on the Hill
is all about!”

2014 COLLEGE PLACEMENTS
In April 2014, SOH took eight students on
an eye-opening overnight trip to Skidmore,
Union, Trinity, and Wesleyan universities.
Seven of the students said that they would
not have been able to visit these colleges
without SOH. Students’ survey comments
demonstrated the value of the college trips:
Academy of the Arts University
Amherst College
Arcadia University, PA
Ashland University, OH
“I love that I had the opportunity to visit these
schools and learn a lot about myself.”
“My favorite part of the trip was talking to
students and getting an insight on college
life.”
“I learned how to be more open-minded about
applying to colleges.”

ACT CLASS
ACT CLASSES
The 90-minute math and English prep classes,
which had a total enrollment of 30 students,
were held on 18 Saturdays. The English and
math teachers each taught two well-received
classes (ACT for 9th/10th graders, and ACT
for 11th/12th). Students’ course evaluations
included:
“I Iiked peer editing each other’s essays
because it gave me more perspective on
what to write about and how to structure my
essay and grade others, so I can see what the
graders look for.”
“It is a tough class, but it’s worth it in the end!”
VISITING UNION COLLEGE
Each Summer, 25-30 responsible high
school students serve as mentors to the
younger children in the program. The mentors
attend a daily leadership seminar, after which
they help supervise the children in sports and
in the classrooms, under faculty and staff
supervision.

HOW MATH
ADDS UP AT
SUMMER ON THE HILL
SOH’s math teachers create a lively
classroom atmosphere by encouraging
students to discuss problems, derive
formulas, and compete. They even hold
math trials! Grade 3-8 teachers develop
students’ quantitative reasoning and critical
thinking skills, and prepare them for algebra
with traditional lessons and such creative
strategies as:

5TH GRADE MATH - EXPLAINING A PROBLEM
SOH’s math outcomes are excellent:
•
Students consistently score at
the highest levels on the Stanford
Achievement Test,
•
High school students say they have
been well-prepared to achieve at a
high level. n
2014 SUMMER
PROGRAM
COLLEGE INTERNS
LEARNING POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE INTEGERS IN
6TH GRADE MATH.’
During “Discuss and Share” in teacher
Andrew Gonzalez’ 5th grade class, students at
each table discuss their answers to a problem
and learn math by using words as well as
numbers. During the summer program, Mr.
Gonzalez introduced his students to topics in
trigonometry -- at their request.
Dana NaTelli, 6th grade math teacher, sets
up a “math court:”
•
Divided into two teams, students are
given a math problem with more than
one solution,
•
Students must convince a “jury”
of classmates that their logic and
answers are correct.
Ms. NaTelli also channels 6th graders’
energy in math competitions that sharpen
students’ skills.
The students of 7th grade teacher Elizabeth
Flores gain a deeper understanding of math
by deriving their own solutions. To find the
area of a shape, students used connecting
manipulatives to create a surface. Through
exploration, students derived the formula for
area and solved the problem. They had fun
and easily remember the formula!
Eighth grade teacher Tom Siegel says that
the 8th grade summer test prep math classes
are essential for preparing students for
high school entrance exams, as the public
schools cannot provide test prep classes.
“Being in the SOH office is akin to working
backstage for a Broadway production--there
is always a flurry of activity, but outside the
office, all appears seamless and easy. That
is the mark of the talent and dedication of the
administrative staff, under whose tutelage
I’ve learned about the inner workings of an
academic program.
SOH acknowledges the outstanding support
of two 2014 Summer Program college
interns:
MATT TAUB
SUMMER INTERNS, MATT TAUB AND AMANDA LEVITT
This past summer, I worked in administration
and admissions, and assisted teachers in
the classroom. Every day, I was floored by
the dedication of SOH’s teachers and the
enthusiasm and curiosity of SOH students.
The experience has been invaluable, as I
hope to pursue education as a career. It’s
been a joy to work at SOH!”
HORACE MANN ’13, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY ‘17
“Although I graduated from Horace Mann
over a year ago, working at SOH has been
one of the most fulfilling experiences I have
had at the school. As an intern, I observed
administrators, faculty, and students. Every
member of the SOH community is dedicated
and talented to a truly inspiring degree.
The students impressed me more every
day. They are enthusiastic about learning
and kind to one another. I greatly enjoyed
playing an active role in the preparation
of the students’ theatrical production; they
asked meaningful questions and wanted to
keep rehearsing even during their break. I
have never known kids of their age who are
so hardworking and engaged.
Likewise, I am impressed by the attention
the administrators give to each student and
his or her unique situation. Every problem
– and every achievement – is met with
immediate administrative action. No student
is left behind here.
SOH students and alumni are vocal about
their love for the program and demonstrate
true appreciation for what it offers. Their
responses to SOH, above all, are what make
working here so worthwhile.”

“Our teachers love what they do
and they care about us!”
Since 1994, Summer on the Hill (SOH), a yearround, after-school enrichment program, has
provided educational and guidance services
to 1,300 bright, low-income students from
the Bronx, Washington Heights, and Harlem,
and has placed 300 students in college.
SOH gives students the encouragement and
education they need to develop their intellect
and confidence.
In July 2014, thanks to the support of the
Heisman Trophy Trust, SOH offered 80
middle school students a new enrichment
activity. Chaperoned groups of middle school
students had wonderful experiences in the
outdoors at an Outward Bound campsite in
New Jersey.
“The climbing…with our harnesses and
ropes…up a huge tree, and that rush of
adrenaline when you jump off, like a falcon
diving for its prey.”
