We want to know what you feel are areas in which we can improve. Our School Improvement Steering Team is open to ideas and suggestions about how we can be a better school. At this time, we have “Strategy Teams” that are working in the areas of math, reading, writing, community communications, student discipline, attendance goal setting and asking questions. Each of these teams has developed plans to improve their specific area of interest. As the year goes on, there are deadlines for implementation of those ideas and data is recorded to show involvement and success. But, a key component of our improvement process is YOU! SICTC Now Accepting Applications ECA Test Coming up Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center (SICTC) is now taking applications for the 2015-2016 school year. With 20 courses of study in 10 different career clusters, students can take classes that prepare them for a high skill, high wage and highly in demand career. SICTC will host an open house on November 3rd from 6-7:30pm and again on November 22nd from 10:30 am– Noon. Interested students and parents are encouraged to attend. Check out www.sictc.com to get more information and to fill out your application. Students who need to retake the ECA exam in Algebra and/or English 10, will be testing starting December 4th-17th. All students in a math lab, Algebra I/2nd semester and juniors and seniors in a language lab will be expected to take the test. Remember to get a good night’s rest, eat breakfast and come with a good attitude. Results should be in when we return from winter break. Good Luck!! DAR Winner Congratulations to Macy Dimmett for being named the 2014-2015 Boonville High School Daughters of the American Revolution Award Winner. BHS staff was asked to nominate a senior who displays the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism, and Macy received the most nominations. Congratulations Macy on your outstanding character!! Page 2 Vincennes University Field Trip a Success Twenty-Five students loaded up a school bus and headed to Vincennes University for a college visit. Students enjoyed a campus tour, a meeting with the admissions’ advisors, and a nice lunch on campus. The BHS Guidance Department encourages all students to get out there and explore the colleges, universities, technical schools, or jobs you are interested in post graduation. Remember, you can have up to two days of school to visit a college campus or shadow a job that interests you if you fill out a college visit or job shadow form. Army Ranger Challenge Congratulations to Ryan Nance and Sarah Hamilton on being named the 2014 Elite Army Challenge winners. During the Army Range challenge all the kids endured two intense phases. The first phase consisted of a series of exercises consecutively one right after the other while being timed and motivated by the Army instructor. Phase two consisted of a modern day Military obstacle course. During these two phases of training the students had the opportunity to compete against one another for the title of “The Elite’ 2014 Ranger Challenge winner for Boonville High School. Ryan & Sarah were presented with a Ranger Challenge Plaque and two tickets to the Indianapolis Colts football game. Boonville Basketball The boys basketball season is nearing its first day of practice. The Pioneers hit the hardwood for the first time November the 10th. Coach Altstadt is joined by Mark Meier (varsity assistant), Dane Russell (JV) Dave Morris, and Courtney Mockobee (frosh coaches). First up on the schedule is the Tecumseh Braves November 29th. That time is fast approaching. Please get out and purchase your season tickets. BHS News Page 3 On-Line Driver Education Classes BTW Driving Academy is offering driver education classes on-line. Go to <btwdriving.com> or contact Mr. Little at 812-202-1241 for more information. Mr. Little will be the primary driving instructor for Boonville students who sign up with Behind the Wheel Driving Academy. You can sign up for these classes as soon as your son or daughter turns 15. BTW Driving Academy is currently offering its’ next traditional classroom class at Boonville. Class starts in November. Times/Date/Days TBA. Call or see Mr. Little for additional info. Classes will be in Mr. Little’s classroom. Whi te Chri stmas The Boonville High School Class Officers are excited to announce this year’s Snowball Dance, White Christmas, on Saturday, December 6 from 8pm-11pm with doors opening at 7:30 for pictures. The dance will take place in the BHS Auxiliary Gym. Watch the announcements for ticket sales information. Remember all dresses must meet BHS dress code. If in question, please see Mr. Whitten. All guest must have proper paper work on file in the office. Forms can be picked up in the office the week before the dance. The Counselors’ Corner Mark your calendars for the annual financial aid meeting which this year will be January 14th at 6:30 p.m. in the Media Center. That same evening, counselors will meet with parents of juniors to discuss important information about preparing for college. The November guidance newsletter will be distributed to seniors early this month. Check out the scholarship opportunities, campus days, etc. Visit the BHS website for updated info! November 14th is midterm for the second 9th weeks. Please help us monitor the progress our students are making in their classes. We want to see all our students earning credits and moving toward their goal of graduation. Remember, students always have something to study—notes, study guides, vocabulary—even if they don’t have a homework assignment due. Also in December, the counselors will be finalizing second semester schedules. Students need to be in the correct classes to reach their goals. After report cards have been printed, if a grade has been changed, you will receive a notice on a special form sent by the teacher with your student or mailed home. You can also check for changes on the Boonville High School website through PIV. Changes will not be made on report cards. Juniors and Seniors are invited to attend college representative visits in the guidance office during part B and C of IRP when available. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to get information and have questions answered without having to drive a long distance. Students must sign up in the guidance office beforehand to attend. Bill Mohler Scholarships We are excited to announce that applications for the Bill Mohler Scholarships will be available to seniors on Friday, November 14th during IRP-A. Beginning with the class of 2013, this award is creating a lasting legacy at Boonville High School for generations to come. What an amazing gift and a wonderful opportunity for our current seniors to graduate with a Bill Mohler Scholar! These awards will be given in various amounts, with the grand prize being an award of $10,000 that is renewable for up to 4 years. This award is capable of covering the entire cost of 4 years of tuition comparable to rates at a public college or university in the state of Indiana. Mrs. Flamion will be meeting with students who qualify on November 14th during IRP-A to explain the scholarship in more detail and provide applications. Applications will be due January 30, 2015. Students must have a 2.8 suggested GPA and plan to enroll in a 2 or 4 year college after high school. Underclassmen should be aware of these scholarships as they will be available for future generations of Pioneers. Rigorous coursework, high GPA, well rounded activities and interests, and character will all be considered in naming these award recipients.
