Cobb County Police Officer Charles Vill (above center) was awarded the Medal of Valor, the highest award recognizing an individual for an act of bravery in a life-threatening situation. In February, Vill was shot five times by the driver of a vehicle he pulled over. Despite being seriously wounded, he maintained his tactical awareness. He acted quickly, moving to cover out of the line of fire, maintained control and provided clear and accurate descriptions and directions over the radio which ultimately led to the capture of his assailant. Acworth Police Department Agent Kyle Arnold (above left) was named the Public Safety Employee of the Year. Arnold, currently assigned to MCS Narcotics, is one of the first entry officers when serving high risk warrants. This year alone, he has participated in the service of 15 to 20 high risk warrants. Arnold has handled major drug cases with highlevel drug dealers. Marietta Police Officer Paul Reynolds won the 2014 Award of Merit. In January, Reynolds provided emergency treatment to a seven-month pregnant woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. His tourniquet not only stopped the bleeding, but moved her broken femur back into place. Smyrna Police Officers Tom Rooney was also honored with the Award of Merit for his actions during an apartment fire where he went door-to-door, evacuating people from the building. His actions were credited with saving at least 17 lives. Cobb County Police Det. Tom Bastis won the Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes an individual whose service and performance has exceeded the realm of the job. Bastis has worked for the Cobb County Police Department since 2003, serving more than five-and-a-half of those years within the Crimes Against Children Unit. Public Safety Appreciation Week, which runs through Oct. 12, is sponsored by the Cobb County of Chamber of Commerce. For more information, visit www.cobbchamber.org/ publicsafety.. ACWORTH’S VETERAN’S DAY CEREMONY Veterans Day Ceremony – The City of Acworth would like to say thank you to those who have faithfully served their country as well as those who are now serving. Acworth is honored to have these brave men and women living in our community and what better way to honor them than to host a Veterans Day Ceremony. Join us on Tuesday, November 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Patriots Point at Cauble Park, home of the Veterans Memorial to honor our nation’s veterans. This year’s keynote speaker is Lt. Col. Doug McKittrick, U.S. Army, Retired. In addition to a distinguished military career, Mr. McKittrick served as the Chairman of the Acworth Veterans Memorial Advisory Committee in 2006. This committee oversaw the building of the Acworth Veterans Memorial at Patriots Point. If you have not seen the Veterans Memorial at Patriot’s Point at Cauble Park, make sure you visit us on November 11. The service flags of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Cost Guard surround the American Flag. The concrete dome structure is surrounded by a paver walkway with engraved pavers. You can still honor a veteran by purchasing Pavers. The pavers are available in 4x4 or 8x8 sizes. With the 4x4, you get 3 lines, each with up to 18 characters engraved on the pavers. The 8x8 comes with 4 lines, each with up to 18 characters engraved on it. By Raymond D Rhoades, CPA Whether it is playing the lottery or traveling to a casino, gambling is an activity that many enjoy. Winning can be exciting but gambling winnings are one of the types of income that must be included on income tax returns. Gambling winnings include lottery, slot machines, table games, horse racing, keno, bingo, poker tournaments, raffles, sweepstakes, sports betting, and so on. Even noncash prizes are taxable. You must include the fair market value of any merchandise received as a prize or winnings. The IRS’ computers will match any W-2G forms received with the amounts on the tax return. If there is income reported to the IRS that is not listed on your tax return you can expect a letter from the IRS. Though the IRS requires you to include all winnings on your tax return, they also allow you to deduct losses from gambling, but only up to the amount of your winnings. You cannot deduct more losses than your winnings unless gambling is your only business. It is important that you do not net the losses against your winnings and report only the difference. Total gambling winnings for the year must be included on line 21 of Form 1040. Gambling losses for the year are deductible only as an itemized deduction on Schedule A, line 28. Since the winnings and losses must be reported separately you must keep records that show both your winnings and your losses. The IRS recommends that you keep an accurate diary or similar record of your losses and winnings. It should contain at least the following information: • The date and type of your specific wager or wagering activity. • The name and address or location of the gambling establishment. • The names of other persons present with you at the gambling establishment. • The amount you won or lost. In addition to your diary you should also maintain other documentation to prove your winnings and losses. IRS Publication 529 Miscellaneous Deductions (page 13) goes into great detail of suggested recordkeeping for documentation that will support gambling winnings and losses. Hopefully you will never need the documentation they recommend. But if you need it to document your losses and don’t have it, denial of the deduction could be expensive. Some years ago, I wrote an article which was printed in an issue of the Bright Side newspaper about a wonderful-butlittle-known Veterans’ benefit called Aid & Attendance. With this benefit, qualified veterans and their spouses with health issues can get a substantial amount of money each month to pay for assistance with such personal care needs like bathing, toileting and dressing. How much? Up to $2,085 per month for a married veteran with a spouse, up to $1,758 per month for a single veteran, up to $1,381 for the spouse of a living veteran, and up to $1,130 per month for the surviving spouse of a veteran. That’s a lot of money, and it buys a lot of help. I am writing about it again because with each passing year there are ever so many more veterans who need this benefit to live more comfortably, more fully, and more happily. If you are a veteran in need of this kind of help or if you are a veteran’s spouse who would benefit from Aid & Attendance, you may contact the Veterans Administration directly, or you can contact Comfort Keepers at 678354-0102. Calls from family members are welcome, too. If you call Comfort Keepers, we can answer many of your questions. We can also connect you with folks who are trained to assist you in filling out the benefit application accurately and completely. This help is provided at no charge to the veteran or the veteran’s spouse, and it often minimizes the waiting time for benefit approval. And for many veterans and their spouses, the quicker they get this benefit, the better. Interested in learning more? Call. ADDRESS CORRECT Neighborhood Realtor® 14 NOV NC Buying a Home? Don't Let Fear Get in Your Way Last week, I was talking to a young couple looking for a home. First, I had our mortgage broker prequalify them. Prequalification lets the Buyer know how much house they can afford, how much the monthly payment will be and it gives the Buyer a stronger negotiating position when making an offer. Yet, when the conversation shifted to finally living in a home that they would own, their disposition changed dramatically. Suddenly, they wanted to wait and save more money for a down payment. The problem with that logic is that any money they put into savings will get eaten up by rising interest rates and housing appreciation. Moreover, according to the Labor Department, U.S. workers’ pay still isn’t keeping up with inflation. Also, a nationwide panel of over one hundred economists, real estate experts and investment & market strategists projected that home values would appreciate by approximately 8% from now to the end of 2015. Lastly, according to Freddie Mac, “In the next few months, mortgage rates are likely to remain at their current, low level, but will not remain there for long. As the Federal Reserve is expected to ‘taper’ its purchases of long-term Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities, and as economic growth picks up, long-term yields will gradually rise. Fixedrate mortgages are expected to be higher in six months, and may even approach 5 percent a year from now.” The moral of the story is: BE NOT AFRAID, TAKE THE PLUNGE. By not waiting, buyers can get the house they want with a payment they can afford today. We are a full service agency located in Marietta, Georgia, but serving all of Georgia. My background is in business with an MBA. I left the corporate world over 25 years ago to live my dream of owning my own business. We are appointed with all the major insurance carriers. We employ our son Chris, and my brother Ron, as well as independent contractors. Throughout the years in the “benefits market place”, I have developed personal relationships with the carriers we represent. So when I say that I shop the market for you, that also means I am able to stay on the cutting edge of what is going on and see the trends as they emerge. Today I want to speak to you about Medicare Health Plans. So, you’ve just become eligible for Medicare. Great! But, as you are probably finding out, it doesn’t cover everything: only about of 80% of your medical expenses. Whether you are “aging in” (turning 65) for the first time, leaving your group medical plan or at “open enrollment”, I can help. Overwhelmed by the confusion of Medicare Health Plans – Medicare Supplement (Medigap) or Medicare Advantage? Most people are. You probably have questions like: What is a Medigap Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan? Which is better for me? That’s where I come in. There is no best plan, only the best plan for you. As an “independent agent”, I can help guide you through the “Medicare information overload”! Once you are enrolled in Medicare Part A & B, you have two main options to handle the expenses not covered by Medicare A & B. One choice is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap policy). The other choice is a Medicare Advantage plan, administered by the insurance carrier. Independent agents like me don’t represent one insurance carrier. This enables me to get to know you and understand exactly what your personal needs are and find the plan that is best for you. I can then “cut through the clutter” and place you in a plan that really fits your needs! I look forward to seeing you! Over the years, we have recognized the positive impact of commercial and residential alarm systems. There are countless cases where alarms have protected our citizen’s and business’s properties. Unfortunately, apathetic behavior in segments of our communities across our country has reduced the effectiveness through false alarms. Typically, national and local research indicates 10% of calls for service come through alarm calls for law enforcement response. Of that, 90% of the calls are false. Aside from the drain on law enforcement resources, overall public safety becomes compromised. Law enforcement and alarm industry representatives have partnered to address current challenges and make technology improvements. The 2013 GA state legislative passed a law requiring 2 call verification from alarm companies prior to 911 notifications (O.C.G.A. 35-1-9). We ask that our residents and businesses educate themselves thoroughly with their current or future systems: Choose a reputable alarm company with experienced installers that pass background checks. Follow recommended routine maintenance schedules and report problems promptly. Educate all users thoroughly on the operation of the system. After Councilman Thrash’s passing there was a huge void to fill. Councilmember Welsh and Mrs. Thrash came together and have put together an amazing program for our future leaders. Councilman Thrash had always wanted to take the Youth Council to Washington DC…this year, in his honor, this council will be going to Washington DC in April. But before they do that, they have much to learn. The mission of the Kennesaw Youth Council is to establish a forum to show selected leaders in our youth community the who, what and most importantly the “why” of governance and servant leadership. This year our selected group will help address pressing needs and involve the youth of our City in creating a better City, County, State, and Nation. On September 23rd the newly selected Kennesaw Youth Council spent the day learning about our County and how Cobb works! They started the day meeting Vic Reynolds our District Attorney and his staff. From there the witnessed two seasoned Superior Court Judges, Judge Ruben Green and Judge Jim Bodiford. Then they were treated to a brown bag lunch and roundtable discussion with Cobb County Commissioner Helen Goreham. The KYC then left the square and headed to the Cobb County Jail and had an enlightening conversation with Chief Beck and Sheriff Warren. After a tour of the Jail they headed over to the Marietta Daily Journal where they met with Editors and Reporters and learned of the importance of media relations in Government. The day concluded at the Cobb County Commission meeting where two of our KYC members engaged in the process. It was a jam packed day that gave the members a quick overview of how the county works. Next up, the KYC will attend a Cobb County School Board meeting. Of the over 60 nominations, this years Kennesaw Youth Council consists of 8 High School Students and a KSU Student Mentor. Our 2014-2015 Kennesaw Youth Council: John W Arnett, Haley Biggins, Jacob Drobney, Jake Hackney, Alex Kirby, Samantha Maddin, Riley Swab and Sam Vang. The KSU mentor is Khy Chestnut. Rev. Sam Storey, Columnist Expectations…Everybody’s got ‘em. But sometimes dealing with them can be difficult. A man once asked his good friend why he had never married? The friend sighed, and said, “Well, I guess I just never met the right woman… I guess I was always looking for the perfect girl.” “Oh, come on now,” said his buddy. “Surely you met at least one girl over the years that you wanted to marry.” “Yes, there was this one girl,” he finally admitted. “I guess she was the perfect girl… The only perfect girl I ever really met. She was perfect in every way… I really thought that she was the perfect girl for me.” “Well, why didn’t you marry her?” The friend paused, and sadly replied, “Apparently… she was also looking for the perfect guy.” Now my point is simply this, often times we are the problem; And a big part of the problem is, again, our expectations. Remember the cartoon that showed a young boy standing toe-to-toe and nose-to-nose with his teacher. Behind them was a blackboard covered with unsolved math problems; presumably ones that the boy had been unable to finish, or do correctly. And in the caption, the boy is saying to his teacher, “I’m not an underachiever… you’re just an over-expecter!” Expectations. And they can really get in the way. Sometimes… they can be really hard to deal with. Just ask Jesus…You see, expectations, especially unmet expectations, were a big problem for Jesus as well. In Matthew 11:16-30, Jesus is saying to them: But you just don’t get it, do you? What were you expecting? You’re like immature children, he says. And then he characterizes their expectations in this way: We played the flute for you, and yet you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and yet you did not mourn. John and Jesus were almost polar opposites. The people didn’t like John’s confrontational attitude whereas Jesus was accessible and understanding. And the people didn’t like that either! It seemed that no matter who God sent, it was never right. Neither John nor Jesus met their expectations… The problem, here, is that it’s not supposed to be about our expectations, it’s not about what we want. Rather, it’s all about what we need so we can be healthy, happy, and well-adjusted. That was what Jesus was all about. He knew about all the things we want or desire in this life. But he loved us so much, that he chose not to give us what we wanted; but, instead, to give us what we desperately needed. Jesus is someone who could take away those heavy burdens that we are always carrying around on our shoulders. Someone who could give us the peace and rest that we are forever seeking, but never seem to find. Someone who loves and accepts us for who we are, and then tells us that, no matter who we are, we are always welcome in His Father’s house. As we find ourselves in the Thanksgiving Season, we recall “the best” Thanksgiving story is what God has done in the history of humankind. And the best part of “the best” story is that it is our story. It is a story that tells us “who” we are by telling us “whose” we are. Have a blessed Thanksgiving! (Rev. Sam A. The preschool morning performance is Friday, Dec. 12 from 9:30 a.m. - noon. “For more than 20 years, Mountain View has recreated the shops, the townspeople, the census takers, the Roman soldiers, all going about their business while an unnoticed miracle takes place in a small corner of the city,” said Rev. Bill Burch, senior pastor at Mountain View UMC. “This wonderful holiday event provides everyone with a superb opportunity experience the goodness of the season with our neighbors and the members of our congregation.” “We accomplish our goal by recreating the entire city of Bethlehem on our church grounds. Each night of Bethlehem Walk is a 2-acre interactive play where visitors can walk through the city’s streets and talk with the potter or the baker. sThe annual production involves more than 175 church members and area volunteers who begin setting up the “city of Bethlehem” in the week after Thanksgiving and play the roles of the people who populated the city on the night of Christ’s birth.
