This year’s market features many new vendors along with returning vendors from last year. The expanded market moved from Adams Park to Depot Park and is open every week from 3-7 pm, rain or shine. Right next to Depot Park in the bus turnaround area, the weekly food truck rallies are scheduled from 6-9 pm, so market visitors can shop, then eat! Be prepared to walk a bit from public parking at City Hall or Adams Park as the parking area at the Depot fills up very quickly. The public lot on Moon Station Road just off Main Street is probably the best place to park; it’s a short walk to Depot Park from there. In development news, the Revival on Main project is steadily progressing and targets its first residential units to be available late summer/early fall with the remainder to be completed by December. In the commercial space, two restaurants are negotiating lease agreements and other restaurants are in discussions. The Dallas/Main mixed use project is also moving forward. The renovation of the former bank building which will house the Whistle Stop restaurant is underway; construction should be completed in August. The core of the project is anticipated to start site work in the August timeframe with vertical construction late 2015/early 2016. Bright Side page 6 CHAIRMAN’S CORNER By Chairman Tim Lee, Cobb County The first half of 2015 has brought numerous exciting announcements regarding SunTrust Park and its mixed-use development. Delta Airlines announced it will continue its partnership with the Atlanta Braves as the exclusive sponsor of Delta SKY360 Club, a new premium hospitality area in SunTrust Park. In March, Comcast shared its plans to occupy a nine-story office tower bringing 850 new jobs to Cobb and creating the most technologically advanced ballpark in the world. Last month, Omni Hotels announced it will build a four-star, full-service hotel as a cornerstone of the mixed-use community. As the Braves are working to achieve their goal,“Team Cobb” has been diligently working to ensure that on Opening Day 2017, residents, commuters and visitors can safely and conveniently access to Sun Trust Park and its amenities. Cobb County has always been proactive with transportation improvements and several projects were in process before the Braves announced their move here. More than $1 billion dollars of transportation improvements currently underway will positively impact game day travel. The county is equally committed to pedestrian safety in this major activity center. I am proud of the County’s ongoing efforts to construct a multiuse bridge connecting the Cobb Galleria Centre and the mixed use community. A study is also underway exploring the best options for implementing a Cumberland District Circulator with the goal of providing a new transportation option for Cumberland residents, workers, shoppers and visitors. Other than any minimal required local match, Cobb taxpayers will not bear the burden of the cost of this project. Our intention from day one has been to achieve 100% funding through multiple sources and that remains my focus. As the studies are completed and designs finalized, several funding sources outside of local taxpayer dollars will be identified. As on all transportation projects, Cobb will pursue all funding opportunities and partnerships. Since the Board of Commissioners voted in November 2013 to bring the Braves to Cobb, the county has already experienced significant economic benefit. •Property taxes collected for the site have more than doubled from $250,000 in 2014 to $512,000 in 2015. •Ongoing construction has resulted in $200 million in contracts awarded to Cobb County companies. retire your flag the dignified way BRIGHT SIDE COMMUNITY NEWSPA Please call 770-851-5469 ax corrections to 678-574-8793 while honoring PROOF KENNESAW CITY a veteran CallCOUNCIL Carol at 770-851-5469 e requests will have to be done in the next issue you adverfor your business. The bridge will create a connector between Frey Road and Busbee Drive over I-75, reducing traffic and giving commuters improved highway access to Town Center amenities, Kennesaw State University and the Northwest Corridor Managed Lanes access ramps at Big Shanty Road. This $17.3 million project has been highly collaborative, with the TCACID, Cobb County DOT, Georgia DOT and KSU each making significant investments. Once completed, the Connector will provide a 19% reduction in daily traffic along Chastain Road at the I-75 interchange and improve access and congestion relief from KSU to I-75. The Skip Spann Connector is multi-modal and includes a separated bike and pedestrian path in addition to the vehicular lanes. This pedestrian and bicycle access will provide a direct connection from Kennesaw State University to the Town Center Park (which is currently being developed by the TCACID) as well as the Town Center Mall and economic activity center, bringing two of the key areas of our CID together like never before. Tracy Rathbone, Executive Director for the Town Center Area CID states, “The Skip Spann Connector is vitally important to our district because it provides another east to west artery that will ease congestion, encourage a variety of transportation options, and further the connectivity of the entire district.” BRIGHT SIDE COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER PROOF Call Carol at 770-851-5469 OPTIMISTS WORKING WITH SCOTTISH RITE TrueVision Eyecare Happy Fathers Day From TrueVision David Grant, President of the Kennesaw Optimist Club has created a new project in conjunction with the Optimist International Childhood Cancer Program. More and more people are finding out just how helpful different oils can be in their everyday lives. Below are a few examples of how oils are being used in everyday life: Bergamot - Used in Earl Gray tea, calming effect during emotional stress, used during women’s monthly cycles. Golden Rod - Supports circulation, cardiac function, and improvement of libido. Lavender - Most versatile oil, used for cleansing skin, sooth minor skin irritations, and very calming. Myrtle - Not as available as some oils, supports a healthy respiratory system, and thyroid function. Peppermint - Good for digestion issues, ease tension, used for easing migraines. Rosemary -- Used to improve mental concentration. Tangerine - source of d-limonene, a powerful antioxidant, can be uplifting to a mood. The purer the oil, the more effective it will be. It is important to know the source of your oils and how they are produced. Oils cold pressed, from fresh plants, and made from the first pressing are the the most powerful. Often times oils that are very inexpensive are made from materials that have fallen to the ground, not fresh, and have additives. Our oils, sold at Trilogy Massage, are of the highest quality available in the United States. Currently I have a list of single oils and blends at trilogymassage.com. All the oils I offer are ingestible and do not have any additives or water to the base. I use only pharmaceutical almond oil for the base of my blends. I recommend that anyone trying essential oils seek advise from the physician concerning their medications or conditions. All statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. With all that said, enjoy your oils. Relaxing protects your heart: Intense, sudden periods of stress or shock, like a breakup or even winning the lottery, can trigger such a rush of adrenaline that the heart can’t function properly, resulting in heart failure or heart attack-like symptoms. Relaxing lowers your risk of catching a cold: Chronic stress lasting more than a month but less than six months doubled a person’s risk of catching a cold. Citizen’s Police Academy On Tuesday, May 19th at 6:00pm, the Acworth Police Department hosted a graduation ceremony for the Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA). Forty members of the community have completed the 12 week program which offers an inside look at the law enforcement profession. This program has been a huge success in building lasting relationships between the Officers and the citizens they serve. Over the past 15 years, more than 600 citizens have participated in the CPA. This year’s class included small business owners, local pastors, and retirees among others. Citizens are instructed on a variety of topics, including search and seizure, traffic law, judgmental shooting, criminal investigations, K-9 demonstrations, domestic violence, drug investigations, etc. The class also had the opportunity to shoot various firearms at the range after first completing a firearms safety course. Graduates will also have an opportunity to ride with officers during a shift. Believe in yourself, be honest and be bold! S h a n C o o p e r, v i c e president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company shared this message with teen girls during the 3rd Annual Girls to Women Leadership Symposium. The event hosted by Destiny’s Daughters of Promise was held at the Mansour Center and attracted nearly 200 participants, to include Claire Bartlett, Field Director to Congressman Loudermilk, Carla Jackson, Cobb County Tax Commissioner, Chief Wayne Dennard of the Acworth Police Department and other community leaders. The one-day event gave prominent women a platform to share the insights they have learned along the way with girls in a small group setting. The women and teens participated in sessions on self-defense, branding and social media, healthy relationships and more. Shan encouraged the girls to pursue their dreams during a question and answer session. Program organizers also recognized Karima Kallon, a student graduating from North Cobb High School Magnet Program for her successful completion of Destiny’s Daughters of Promise’ Leadership Program. Kallon will attend Johns Hopkins University in the fall. Pictured is Karima Kallon being congratulated by Shan Cooper. 770-627-4725 BOOK ONLINE: WWW.PATRICIAHILLCOLORSTUDIO.COM 2950 Cherokee Street • Suite 100 • Kennesaw BRINGING YOU THE POWER OF ENERGY “My EMC helps my family make smart energy efficiency choices” cobbemc.com This summer, keep your house warmer than normal when you are away, and lower the thermostat setting to 78°F (26°C) only when you are at home and need cooling. In the United States, the most recent Census shows our 65 and older population growing faster than the total U.S. Population. By the year 2030, an estimated 84 million people will be in this category and will represent 20 percent of the total population. Beginning in 2012, Baby Boomers began turning 65 at a rate of 10,000 per day -- a trend that will continue for 20 years. Concomitant with this growth, elder abuse is spiraling. In January 2013, just weeks after being initially sworn in, I established an Elder Abuse Unit in my office to handle all prosecution of such crimes and to work with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, local Police Departments, Adult Protective Services, the YWCA of Northwest Georgia, and the Georgia Department of Human Services. Elder Abuse can take many forms: neglect, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and financial exploitation. Today, I will address one area of Elder Abuse: Financial Exploitation. Studies indicate seniors lose about $2.9 billion a year to fraud and scams. On average, individual victims of elder abuse lose $90,000. In Georgia, it is illegal to knowingly and willfully exploit a disabled adult, elder person, or resident of a longterm care facility. “Exploit” means to illegally or improperly use an elder’s resources through undue influence, coercion, harassment, duress, deception, false representation, or false pretense. As prosecutors, we have seen Elder Financial Abuse take many forms, such as forging an elderly person’s signature; gaining an elder’s trust, then exploiting the relationship for gifts or loans; coercing someone to change legal documents; stealing possessions; or telemarketing scams. Such abuse also has an emotional impact. The victim may be ashamed, lose confidence, or become fearful or depressed. Many times, victims are too embarrassed to tell anyone what has happened. If you or someone you know has been the victim of Elder Abuse, please contact your local law enforcement agency immediately. Read more about DA Vic Reynolds and the activities of the Cobb District Attorney’s Office at www.cobbda.com or on Facebook. Chief’s Corner by Bill Westenberger At the end of last month, Special Olympics Georgia hosted the state-wide summer games at Emory University. As always, it was an exciting weekend for all involved. The 2015 Summer Games was initiated earlier in the week with law enforcement officers around the state participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR). LETR is the largest grassroots fundraiser for Special Olympics. The run culminated with the law enforcement officers relaying the “Flame of Hope” finally lighting the cauldron officially opening the summer games. Kennesaw Police is a proud sponsor of the LETR for Special Olympics GA. Annually, we participate in several fundraising events to raise money to include the Polar Plunge (February), the Super Hero 5k (March) and selling donuts (this year coming up June 6-7) to name a few. Our participation always provides us with the most humbling experiences. We hope that you take the opportunity to participate or support us as we help provide opportunities for children and adults with mental disabilities. We can all apply the Special Olympics Oath to ourselves and our lives – “Let me win. If I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” -In Humble Service- page 15 Bright Side 15 JUNE NC SUPPORT THE MILITARY WITH CARE PACKAGES Let’s show the Military we Care! Inside is a gorgeous, modern hair salon where they pride themselves on studying and mastering all of the newest hair coloring, cutting, and styling techniques. They use amazing products from Davines, and share their sustainable beauty vision. Patricia Hill was inspired to begin her journey in hairdressing by her mother-in law, Hanh Hill. Hanh came to the U.S. as a Viet Nam immigrant for the love of a local soldier, Ben Hill, who she met during the war. She is living the American dream, as the owner of Kennesaw Hair Salon. Hanh inspired Patricia to leave her Mortuary Science background to pursue hairdressing. While working for her, Patricia also took on a part time education position with MATRIX, traveling the southeast teaching hair coloring, cutting and styling. This enhanced Patricia’s knowledge of the chemistry behind haircolor, as she worked hard and earned a color master certification. Two years ago Patricia decided to branch out and begin her own small studio with an amazing new Artist, Sri Metaeo. Together they built a thriving following, that they are humbled to have. On March 31st this year, Patricia opened Patrica Hill Color Studio, a full sized salon, in historic downtown Kennesaw, with Sri as the Manager. They are so excited to share their new environment that fuses a modernized historic space with the art of hair. The salon is an incredibly relaxing space which heightens your salon experience. Art galleries, museums, boutiques and restaurants host jazz musicians and local artists from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3. Visitors enjoy the in-town culture and small town charm this Southern city center is known for, while strolling the brick sidewalks of Marietta Square. Starting Friday evening, Marietta Square comes alive with activity for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. While Church Street closes to traffic to set up Saturday’s arts and crafts festival, photographers aim their lenses at a unique alley photo shoot off of Church Street, adjacent to Lenny’s Hair Salon. On West Park Square, dk Gallery presents ‘Farm to Table,’ a landscape and still life show. On South Park Square, Red Door Art Gallery & Studio will have their mid-year studio clearance sale, and Marietta Square Artist’s Attic will provide entertainment with their regular jazz ensemble. At the heart of Art Walk are the visual artists selling their artwork on the sidewalks of Marietta Square. From April through June, these artists competed for two sought-after awards, ‘Best of Show’ and ‘People’s Choice.’ Awards resume in August and culminate in the Encore Show in November, where ‘Best of Show’ winners from each month will be given the opportunity to display their art at one of four local gallery sponsors: dk Gallery, Marietta Square Artist’s Attic, 2 Rules Fine Art and Red Door Art Gallery & Studio. Proceeds from the Art Walk’s Beer Garden support cash prizes for ‘Best of Show’ winners. Although the Beer Garden won’t be set up for ‘Jazz in July,’ it returns in August with musical entertainment by Jennings Music, Marietta Social Club and the Emerson Drummers. Free parking will be plentiful in the parking deck on Cherokee Street, across from the Earl Smith Strand Theatre, as well as the other two parking decks located off of Waddell Street and Lawrence Street. NCHS VOLLEYBALL STATE CHAMPS North Cobb accomplished what no one thought possible and relished in the first championship for the school since 1983. In a five set thriller, the North Cobb Lady Warriors volleyball team captured their first state title after defeating the North Gwinnett Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, November 1, 2014. The Lady Warriors last loss came on October 11 against Harrison in the area tournament before playoffs began. From the area championship until the state championships was definitely a Cinderella story. The Lady Warriors were as low as they could be after getting dominated by Harrison and the team had their fair share of doubts. North Cobb’s aggressive service game proved pivotal in knocking off the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Warriors tallied 14 aces with only two serving errors in the entire match and won by a significant margin 15-9 to capture the state title for their school. Way to go, Warriors! Let’s Talk About Guns By Mario Campisano s e e tin 6:00 a M 0 r until Noon 0 . 6 $ -Thu n until Mon at & Su ri, S F “What happened to the bang??” You are at the range, throwing some lead and during your volley, trigger is pulled…… nothing happens or five seconds later, “BANG. What happened? You probably just experienced a misfire, hang fire or a squib. Misfire – Pulling the trigger, nothing happens; related to ammo or gun. Hang Fire - Pulling the trigger, nothing happens initially, then, BANG; most likely a delayed primer. Squib Load or Squib Round – Pulling the trigger, which produces a less than normal bang or slight pop; most likely related to insufficient or no powder load in the cartridge. Projectile may be stuck in the barrel. You may not know which of the three, so, it’s important to remember a few things: Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction down range. Wait 30-45 seconds, to rule out a Hang Fire. Release the magazine, lock slide back and check to see what was extracted from the chamber, a whole cartridge or a casing only? Results: complete cartridge, inspect primer for impact dimple, which means a bad cartridge; chamber another cartridge or try different ammunition; if no impact dimple, could be firing pin. This would need gunsmith support. Empty casing, inspect the barrel for blockage. I carry two very important pieces of equipment in my range bag, a mini flash light and a bore light. The bore light has a fiber optic end, which slides into the barrel. If the light shines through to the chamber, all be clear, if not, you may have a projectile stuck in the barrel. If so, my recommendation is to see on-site gunsmith to assist you, avoiding further damage to the barrel. That’s it for now. As always, if you have questions, feedback, or interested in taking a class, please contact me at [email protected]. The next NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Class will be end of June time frame. Safety is your number one responsibility, for a fun time shooting!! Sam Storey, Columnist The new geographic “center“ of Christianity has shifted slightly. Want to guess where the global geographic center of Christianity is now located? No, it’s not Vatican City or some football stadium sized sanctuary in Texas; it’s not in South Korea, South Africa, or Southern Jerusalem. The new global center-point for Christianity, the new center of gravity for the Christian religion, is . . . Timbuktu. That’s right, Timbuktu in Mali. Can anyone locate Timbuktu on the map? Timbuktu is the ultimate, classic definition of “the middle of nowhere.” What better place to locate the heart of Christianity? Where is the hope and love of Christ needed more . . . than in the midst of all our “nowheres?” The good news is that from its central point of Timbuktu, Christianity is the largest and fastest growing world religion. There are now over two billion Christians scattered across the globe. But “scattered” is the operative word to describe these Christian communities. They are scattered geographically across the planet. And the cultural diversity among these different populations is huge. There are about 34,000 different “denominations” recognized within twenty-first century “Christianities.” But some other faith-counters put the number much higher, putting Jesus’ flock into as many as 122,000 different tribes. There are two dangers in this fracturing of the faith. First, if we call everything “Christianity,” then eventually nothing is Christianity. Not every spiritual sputtering can be declared a new incarnational expression of Christ-centered faith. The second danger is the hazard that every baby chicken faces. If one chick in a flock looks or behaves as somehow “different” than the rest of the baby chicks, its days are numbered. Eventually somebody will peck at it, pulling out some feathers, maybe causing a red sore spot to emerge, making it look even more different. Now all the other flock members will start pecking at the offending chick. Pecking, plucking, and persecution will continue until the chick is killed. Individuality is not tolerated in a flock of chickens. When Jesus described himself as the “good shepherd,” he promised to care for his “flock” completely, even to the point of laying down his life for the sake of his “sheep.” Being in relationship with the good shepherd, not being some right size, shape, or color, make the good shepherd and his flock One. As the “Good Shepherd,” Jesus cautioned those all ready gathered that there were “other sheep that do not belong to this fold.” These “other sheep” would also be joined into the one flock of the one shepherd (John 10:1-21). Jesus’ flock is composed of the coming together of a host of different people. Jesus’ “flock”, is going to have members that definitely look different, act different, and are different. These particularities are what make Jesus’ “flock” strong, adaptable, enabled to grow and flourish in all sorts of different environments. The kind of unity that joins us into one “flock” is the “perfect harmony” of the Spirit of Christ. In Colossians 3:14, Paul says to “Put on love which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” I’ve often wondered if that is where the ad-writers for the 1971 Coca-cola commercial got the inspiration for their hit song: “I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony . .” It’s known as one of the best commercials in television history. True “religion” leads to “harmony,” to concord, not to combat and contention. (Rev. Sam A. Storey, Sr. is Senior Associate Minister, Emeritus, First United Methodist Church of Marietta, Georgia.
