and Youth Studies
Want to make a difference in your community? Our students do.
They appreciate that WelTec’s addiction, counselling and youth
studies courses are practical and applied, and that you learn
through actual work experience.
What you learn is how to actually help people
in the community. Whether it's helping
a family affected by alcohol, counselling
someone who's mourning or inspiring young
people, your training will help get you ready
to handle these challenges.
Our students like that they learn from people
who have rich experience in these areas and
who are doing research in these fields.
We also work with professional bodies to
make sure what you study is recognised,
applicable and approved. Our close
connection to the sector also offers you
many opportunities to do work experience,
practicums, clinical practice and to get
supervision.
Our study programmes can be designed
to suit you. We know life's busy. We offer
full-time and part-time options at both our
Wellington CBD campus and at Petone, as
well as in Auckland. You can also do some
learning online or do a short course.

Addiction Studies
Youth Studies
You'll grow your understanding of addiction
– the theory behind it as well as practical
strategies to treat clients and help them
manage addictions. What you learn is based
on tested research and you'll then do work
experience to practise your skills. You can
study at several different levels and you've
got options to do full-time or part-time study.
Want to see young people succeed? The
Bachelor of Youth Development gives you
the skills and on-the-job training to help
do just that. You'll learn and work as you go
with a work placement – if you're already
doing some youth work, you can continue
that, or we'll help you find somewhere you
can use your skills.

You will become familiar with current issues in

unique graduate programme designed to
meet the needs of graduates with related
qualifications and work experience, for
knowledge and understanding of addictive
behaviour, alcohol and drug issues and
problems, and approaches to practice in the
addiction services field. This is a one-year
programme of study.
This is a non-clinical programme and therefore
is not workplace based. It will however equip
graduates with knowledge and skills relating
to addiction, alcohol and drug services. The
programme aims to attract students who want
to increase their knowledge base, in ways
that will enhance their professional practice
where addictions, especially alcohol and drug
problems are an issue for the people they
work with.
The programme introduces students to the
scope of addiction, alcohol and drug services;
assessment and intervention strategies for
clients with addiction and co-existing mental
health disorders. It provides knowledge of the
ethics, theories and principles that underpin
the work of addiction, practitioners.

Like the idea of working as an architectural
technician or draughtsperson? You’ll get the
skills to design and produce construction
drawings for a building site. As well as
developing your technical drawing skills
using computer-aided design (CAD)

The Bachelor of Engineering Technology
is an nationally-led qualification offered in
collaboration with five other Institutes of
Technology throughout New Zealand and
forms the basis for a career as an Engineering
Technologist – an area in huge demand across
the country and around the world.
The aim of the New Zealand Diploma in
Engineering is to provide skilled and competent
engineering technicians who: apply engineering
theory to practice, and competently perform
technical operations to the standards, ethical
and professional responsibilities required by
the engineering profession; have a knowledge
sufficient to permit informed, rational decision
making in a specialist field of engineering
and to implement these decisions; will work
collaboratively with construction workers,
clients, authorities, agencies, industry and other
professionals to provide a comprehensive

The majority of your learning takes place in
computer labs, where you will use specialised
facilities such as virtual machines, servers or
our hardware lab with repair, maintenance
and test facilities.

IT skills are very much in demand and the

Information Technology
You can either complete a one-year graduate
diploma or the three-year bachelor’s degree.
You’ll get a solid grounding in IT, plus you’ll

The Bachelor of Information Technology
is a degree focused on applied IT – the
practical side of things. If you’ve always
loved working with computers, this could

Network Administration
Computer networks are a vital part of any
business – they keep employees connected
to each other and businesses to their
customers. Up-skill in Microsoft network
administration and you’ll get practical

Web Technologies
Computer Servicing
A hands-on course that’s not just about
hardware. Sure, you’ll do things like take
a computer completely apart and put it
back together again, but you’ll also learn
networking, programming, help desk work
and how to troubleshoot problems. All that
