1. Eligibility of Exhibitors and Entries: Open to Michigan youth that have reached their 7 birthday and are not yet 22
as of January 1, 2015. All cattle are to be solely owned and shown by the exhibitor making the entry. An exhibitor may
enter up to four breeding heifers and two market animals. All exhibitors and parent/guardian must sign the entry
form for entry to be accepted. Signing entry indicates that exhibitors understand and agree to abide by all rules and
consequences.
2. Entries and Entry Fees: There is a $45.00 entry fee for each animal entered before November 13, 2014. Entry fees
must accompany entries and sent to: Michigan Winter Classic, 453 Fleming Rd., Tekonsha, MI 49092. Checks should
be made payable to Michigan Junior Livestock Society- Beef. Entry Fees are non-refundable and must be
postmarked (no postage meters) on or before November 12, 2014. A $30.00 fee will be charged for all returned
checks. Any envelopes postmarked November 13, 2014 and after will be mailed back to the exhibitor.
* Late entries for steers and heifers will only be accepted on site at a fee of $100 per head. Late entries will close at
7 pm December 5, 2014 for steers and 6 pm December 6, 2014 for heifers. Do not mail late entries.
3. Arrival: Tack and cattle may begin arriving after 12:00 noon on Thursday, December 4, 2014. Doors will remain
locked until this time. Steers must be in place by 7 pm on Friday. Livestock trailers may be parked in the north trailer lot.
All other vehicles should park in the north spectator lot to avoid congestion.
4. Registration Papers: Registration applications or photocopies WILL NOT be accepted. NO FAXES WILL BE
ACCEPTED. ONLY ORIGINAL REGISTRATION PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Double check tattoos at home,
tattoo information provided on registration paper MUST match the tattoo in the animal’s ear. All animals not
matching the registration paper have the opportunity to show in the commercial heifer class or crossbred steer
class. Animals will not be allowed to return to stalling area and be rechecked for appropriate identification after
entering a check in chute.
5. Check-In: All check-in will be done in the auditorium. Check-in will be available from 6-8 pm on Thursday,
December 4, 2014 and will reopen from 10am-1pm and 3-7pm on Friday, December 5, 2014. Exhibitor packets will be
distributed from a designated area and must be obtained before checking/weighing in cattle. All steers and heifers that
arrive on Thursday or Friday must check in by Friday. Check-in for exhibitors arriving on Saturday with breeding heifers
will be from 5-6 pm. All females must be checked in by 6 pm, Saturday December 6, 2014.
6. Jackpot Steer and Heifer Division: Optional- only those paying at time of entry can participate. An additional entry
fee of $5 must be made at the time of entry. Steer and breeding heifer monies kept separate with splits of 50% to
Champion Jackpot, 35% to Reserve Jackpot and 15% remaining with MJLS.
7. Awards: Awards will be given to breed and crossbred divisions and overall champions. Premiums will be paid on a
sliding scale basis. The top 5 steers and top 5 heifers will be selected from the Champion and Reserve Champion in each
division. Premium checks will be mailed after the show.
8. All Around Youth Educational Contest Award: Competition divided into three age groups. Prizes will be awarded
in each age group. Michigan youth not showing cattle may enter by paying a $45 entry fee.
9. Showmanship: All exhibitors are welcome to participate in Showmanship (not invitational). Steer/Market
animal showmanship will be conducted on Friday evening. All market animals must be checked-in in order to be eligible
for showmanship. All showmanship will be conducted NO FIT.
The heifer show on Sunday will begin with Showmanship NO FIT. After the finals of heifer showmanship there will be a
30 min break before the breed show begins.
Showmanship classes will be divided by age determined as of January 1, 2015: Junior 8-12, Intermediate 13-15, and
Senior 16-21. Exhibitor must show their own animal.
10. Grooming Regulations: Use of false tail heads or adding of hair or hemp is prohibited. Coloring agents, except
powders, may only be used on the legs and tail switch. Use of powders is prohibited. No coloring agents may be used
above the animal’s flank. This includes colored show foams (black, red, etc). NO FORCED ADMINISTRATION OF
FLUIDS TO CREATE GUT FILL WILL BE ALLOWED! VIOLATION WILL RESULT IN THE DISQUALIFICATION OF THE
ENTRY AND THE EXHIBITOR. Any equipment found in the Pavilion or on the grounds, used for forced administration of
fluids, will be confiscated. NO aerosol cans in the Arena, make-up area or surrounding areas.
11. Stalling of Animals: Stalls will be assigned. All cattle will be housed in the Pavilion, or in tie-outs. Cattle are not
permitted to stall next to trailers. All heifers that arrive on Thursday or Friday must be stalled in tie-outs until after
the steer show on Saturday. Stalling on Thursday and Friday night will be assigned based on the number of steers/mkt
animals entered. Exhibitors do NOT need to clean their stalls.
12. Outdoor tie-outs: The stalling committee requests that heifers arriving on Thursday or Friday be stalled in tie-outs
after check-in and through the conclusion of the steer show. The stalling committee reserves the right to enforce this due
to space limitations. Exhibitors do not need to clean tie-outs.
13. Animals must be under control of the exhibitor at all times. Removal of an animal deemed dangerous will be at
the discretion of the committee. If an animal gets loose three times in the show ring and/or makeup area, the
exhibitor and animal will be excused from the ring.
14. Pavilion Rules:
 Butt fans will not be allowed behind the cattle or in the aisles unless suspended overhead. A maximum of one fan
per three head of cattle allowed.
 No generators will be allowed in or around the Pavilion.
 Dogs are not permitted in the Pavilion at any time during this event.
 Alcoholic Beverages are Prohibited- In accordance with University policy and given this is a youth event;
consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited and will not be tolerated. MSU Police will be notified if
consumption is observed by or reported to show management.
 The Pavilion is a non-smoking facility. Please respect this!
15. Responsibility: The Michigan Junior Livestock Society and Michigan State University are not responsible for any
losses by theft, sickness, death, injury, crippling, bruises or condemnation.
16. All exhibitors as well as their parent/guardian must sign the entry form regardless of exhibitor’s age. Signing
this entry indicates that the rules and information provided in this packet have been read and that the exhibitor and
parent/guardian will abide by the rules and understands the consequences. Furthermore, all exhibitors and parents
signing this form agree to be subject to the MJLS By Laws. By Laws can be found on our website at

17. Stalling Requests: Stalling requests must be made by sending all entries in one envelope. No requests will
be accepted over the telephone or in separate envelopes. All requests must be sent at the time of entry, requests
received after November 12, 2014 will not be considered. There are no guarantees regarding stalling requests. The
committee volunteers will do their best to accommodate requests but make no guarantee!
18. “NO FIT” – Showmanship will be No Fit with the exception of U-Fit contestants– Animals must be presented with no
adhesives, oils, color agents, paint or similar products in the hair.
19. There is a minimum number of 5 head per breed for the steer and heifer shows. There is a three year probation for
all breeds to insure that there is at least 5 head shown. If for three years there is less than 5 head shown each year, the
breed will be discontinued and those animals will show in the AORB (all other registered breeds) division. The numbers
will continually be reviewed and when the breed reaches 5 or more head for three consecutive years, it will then become a
separate breed division the following year. However, if sponsorship is provided for a particular breed with less than five
head, that breed will continue to show as a separate breed.
20. Photography Release: All pictures or videos captured by official MJLS photographers may be used by MJLS for
promotional or other consideration. Signing the entry form constitutes a full release to MJLS of official pictures or videos
of you or your animal’s likeness.
HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
1. All cattle must be dehorned if horn length is greater than two inches.
2. Cattle infected with a communicable disease may not be brought to the show. To meet the health standards required
to show, animals need to be free of illness including but not limited to:
 Clinical signs of respiratory disease (watery eyes, nasal discharge, elevated temperature, excessive slobbering)
 Active ringworm and/or warts
 Identifiable external parasites
3. Evidence of surgical, conformation or any other unethical alterations will result in the animal and exhibitor being
disqualified from competition.
4. Castration procedure must be completely healed showing no sign of swelling, discharge or decay.
5. Animals not meeting these standards are to be removed from the Pavilion immediately upon notification to the exhibitor
and/or parents to retain his/her ability to exhibit in future MJLS shows.
6. All cattle participating in the 2014 Michigan Winter Classic must be tagged with official electronic
identification (RFID) tag approved by the Michigan Department of Agriculture.
TB TEST REQUIREMENTS FOR 2014 MICHIGAN WINTER CLASSIC
For Cattle in the Modified Accredited Zone (Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Montmorency, and Oscoda counties): Must
provide a movement permit. Originate directly from a bovine TB Accredited Free Herd or have had a whole herd test
within the past 12 months and had a negative movement test within 60 days. Steers only have to provide proof that the
individual animal was TB tested with negative results within 60 days prior to this show.
For Cattle in the TB Free Zone: No TB tests are required for exhibition at this show.
For Cattle in the Modified Accredited Advanced Zone (Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Otsego
and Presque Isle counties): Negative movement test within 60 days if not from a TB Accredited Free Herd. If from a TB
Accredited Free Herd, no movement permit or testing is required.

Contest

Friday, December 5, 2014 at 2pm
This contest offers youth an opportunity to showcase their abilities to fit an animal for show.
1. Awards will be divided based on age in two divisions – Jr. and Sr. divisions. Jr. Division- youth 8-12 years of age and
Sr. Division – youth 13-21 years of age (age determined as of January 1, 2015).
2. Cattle will be clean and dry with no adhesives, oil or other foreign substances when they enter the ring.
3. Chutes will be used and provided by the participates.
4. No helpers, clippers or blowers will be used.
5. No paint or coloring agents allowed.
6. Thirty minutes will be allowed to fit and groom the animal, followed by a display of the animals.

Any junior exhibitor awarded 1 prize in this contest must compete in the senior division in following years, if they choose
to compete again before turning 13. An exhibitor is only allowed to win the senior division twice.
Howard King Memorial Bred & Owned Steer and Market Heifer Class
Sponsored by: Doris King and Howard King Memorial Fund
The Bred & Owned class will be held at 8 am Saturday December 6, 2014. This class is open to any youth with a steer or
market heifer (crossbred or registered) that was bred and raised by the youth exhibitor or by a member of their immediate
family (parents/guardian and siblings living at the same home). A Champion and Reserve animal will be recognized and
will receive a traveling trophy.
Prospect Market Animals
Show: Saturday, December 6, 2014
9 am
Show Order (different from heifers): Crossbred steers, Market heifers, Simmental, Shorthorn Plus, Shorthorn,
Mainetainer, Maine, Hereford, Chi, AORB (all other registered breeds), and Angus. Prospect animals will be shown by
breed, then weight.
Registration requirements: All steers entered in a specific breed must be registered solely in the name of the youth
exhibitor with their respective national breed association. Registration certificates or appropriate performance pedigrees
must be presented at check-in time. All breed steers must be tattooed and tattoos must correspond to registration papers.
All steers entered in a breed division will abide by the guidelines for registry by the respective national breed association.
Shorthorn Plus division includes all “appendix” registered shorthorns with 50% or greater Shorthorn as well as registered
Durham Red. Steers that are not registered will be shown in the Crossbred division.
Market heifers: Market heifers will be shown by weight. Market heifers may be shown in breeding classes.
Weight requirement: Prospect animals must weigh a minimum of 400 lbs. and a maximum of 900 lbs. All steers
weighing over 900 lbs, regardless of breed, will be allowed to show in a 900 lb + class and receive a premium for that
class but will NOT be eligible for a division or championship drive.
Breeding Heifer Show
Show: Sunday, December 7, 2014
9 am
Show Order (different from steers): Angus, AORB (all other registered breeds), Chi, Hereford, Limousin, Maine,
Mainetainer, Shorthorn, Shorthorn Plus, Simmental (Percentage), Simmental (Purebred) and Commercial. Heifers
will be shown by breed, then youngest to oldest.
Eligibility: Heifers born from July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014 are eligible to show.
Registration requirements: All heifers entered in a specific breed must be registered solely in the name of the youth
exhibitor with their respective national breed association. Registration certificates must be presented at check-in time. All
breeding heifers must be tattooed and tattoos must correspond to registration papers. All heifers will abide by the
guidelines for registry as established by the respective national breed association. Registered, low percentage heifers
that are dual registered can show with only one breed and must be entered as such. Shorthorn Plus division includes all
“appendix” registered shorthorns with 50% or greater Shorthorn as well as registered Durham Red.
Commercial Heifers: Breeding heifers that are not registered will be shown by weight in the Commercial division.
Bred & Owned Heifer Show
Any heifer that is Bred and Owned by the exhibitor may participate in this show. Only registered heifers are eligible, no
commercial heifers. Heifers MUST be bred and owned by the exhibitor. The show will run simultaneously with the
regular heifer show. After each breed champion selection and overall champion selections, a bred and owned will be
selected if the champion or reserve do not qualify. No extra entry fee is necessary, just check the box on the entry
form if your heifer is B&O. A Top Five Overall will be selected with the Champion Overall receiving a banner and $250,
Reserve Overall receiving a banner and $200, Third Overall receiving a banner and $150, and Fourth Overall receiving a
banner and $100 and Fifth Overall receiving a banner and $50 each.

2014 All-Around Youth Award
Michigan Winter Classic Show
This is an educational contest which includes four categories of competition; poster, quiz, graphic design and photography
contests, for all Michigan youth. Participates will be divided into three age categories with age determined as of January
1, 2015. The age categories are senior 16-21, intermediate 13-15, and junior 8-12. The top three individuals within each
age group, with the greatest number of points in the five categories of competition, will receive awards. An individual may
compete in as many categories as he or she would like. Michigan youth not showing cattle may enter ($45 entry fee).
Contests
Poster – The topics for the poster contest are:
Junior: After you select your calf for the upcoming show season, what do you do to have them ready for the first show?
Intermediate: What impact has the rising cost of cattle both in the market and breed sales had on the industry? With the
rising costs, has this affected America’s eating habits? What impact will this have on the beef industry in the future?
Senior: Beef check off dollars are used to promote the beef industry from pasture to plate. Please explain what programs
the check off dollars are used for and the benefit they provide farmers and ranchers.
Posters must be checked in by Saturday by 11:00 am Posters should be original work, not exhibited at previous
MJLS events. Evaluation will be based on (1) neatness, grammar, and spelling; (2) clarity of “answer” to question; (3)
accuracy of information. List all resources used on back of poster with your name and birth date.
Quiz will be administered from 6:00 to 8:00 on Friday, December 5, 2014 and again (only for
youth arriving Friday evening) on Saturday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am
Quiz - Contestants will be tested on their general knowledge of beef cattle and ability to identify items related to their beef
cattle project which may include: nutrition, management, health, reproduction, genetics, fitting and showing, selection,
meat products, breeds, feeds, body parts, breed traits, equipment and others that pertain to beef production and
promotion. It is suggested that contestants refer to the following for information to prepare for the event:

North Central Region Extension Beef Skills for Life Material: Available in your county Extension office
Retail and wholesale cuts of beef charts
Feed tags from your local grain elevator
Photography Contest - Contestants should submit one entry no smaller than 3 x 5 and no larger than 8 x 10. All entries
must be matted, mounted or framed. The photograph should include cattle in some area of the fore or background.
Entries will be judged on quality of photograph, originality of shot/pose, overall audience appeal. Photograph must be the
work of the youth participant making entry. Digital photographs are accepted; however quality of the print will be
evaluated. Please include your name and birth date on the back of the entry. All photography must be turned in by
11:00 am on Saturday.
Graphic Design Contest - Create a flyer or brochure (8 ½ x 11). Please use the topics listed above in the poster contest
for your age division. This contest will enable participates to use computer technology to design materials that promote
and/or teach individuals about the beef industry and activities. The entries will be judged on the following areas:
originality, message, attracts attention, use of space and design. Please include your name and birth date on a separate
card attached to the design project, if it is not already included in the text of the project. Graphic design projects should
be original designs that have not been entered in previous MJLS events. All graphic design must be turned in by
11:00 am on Saturday.
MJLS Scholarships
The Michigan Junior Livestock Society is offering scholarship opportunities to college students with a
minimum of three years experience exhibiting livestock. MJLS is awarding a minimum of three $500
scholarships at the 2014 Michigan Winter Classic. Applications may be obtained from our website or
by contacting the scholarship chairperson: Tara Miller at [email protected] or 517-749-8187.
Applications must be mailed and postmarked by November 10th, 2014.
NOTES & REMINDERS
~ Campers—Registration and pre-pay is required, please check this information out on the
entry form. You must have your permit visible during the event!
~ If wanting to stall in a group, please send all entries in one envelope. Entries sent in
separate envelopes will not be stalled together and no master lists accepted.
~ All entry forms must be signed by the exhibitor as well as a parent or guardian, regardless of
exhibitor’s age.
~ All market animals must be checked-in prior to showing in market animal showmanship on
Friday evening.
