And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.

And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring."

Owner of Villas at San Bernardino
Happy fall to all of you beautiful “Villas Goblins” I am looking forward to the change of
season and cooler weather coming soon. What a wonderful Halloween party, our little trick or
treat visitors all dressed up. I know the incredible kitchen staff is busy preparing a wonderful
Resident Thanksgiving luncheon Feast with all the trimmings. Thanksgiving is just around the
corner and I’m so grateful for my caring and incredible staff, warm and loving families, and
most of all the residents of the Villas who make our community the extraordinary place it is!
I would like to welcome all the new residents to our wonderful community. I encourage you all
to take advantage of the many activities and adventurous outings we have to offer at the villas.
My office is always open if you need anything.
Happy Thanksgiving,

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!! Another year coming to an end is really hard to believe.
For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.

I wanted to take this opportunity to explain what our Employee Fund is all about. We here at the
Villas pride ourselves on providing the best care in a loving environment and it takes many hands
to make that possible. Many residents and family members start asking me about this time, is it ok
to buy gifts for some of the caregivers that take care of my Mom, Dad, Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt,
Uncle, Friend, Brother or Sister? I know that the caregivers are our hands-on staff that you see when
you come to visit, or chat with during their visits to your loved one’s apartments; however, there are
many other team members that you may not recognize or see and I want to make sure that all are
noticed for their hard work. We have housekeepers, a laundry attendant, servers, dishwashers, cooks,
a chef, office personnel, activity director and assistant, medication technicians and an LVN; all of
whom provide hands-on service to your loved one. With that said, in lieu of gifts I would ask you to
make a donation to the Employee Fund. There is no set dollar amount, just whatever you would like
to donate or gift. These monies are then distributed in addition to Dan and my bonuses to our team in
December. I have already scheduled the employee holiday party for December 20th at the Castaway
Restaurant. The past couple of years we have been fortunate enough to have a good bonus for our
employees with combined totals of $13,000. This is distributed based on tenure to ALL employees
except Dan and myself.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to stop by my office or give me a call.
Until next time, be safe and happy.

glory of the year, bringing us the fruition of months

colour effects as from August to November."

Nurses Notes
Hypertension (also known as high blood pressure)
is one of the most common conditions that affect
one out of three people in the United Sates. What
exactly is blood pressure? As your heart pumps
blood to the different parts of your body, the blood
pushes against the walls of your blood vessels and
arteries. The force that is exerted is what doctors
refer to as blood pressure. Your blood pressure is
determined by the amount of blood your heart
pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow
in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps
and the narrower your arteries are, the higher your
blood pressure will be. When it’s too high, it raises the heart’s workload
and can cause serious damage to the arteries. Over time, uncontrolled
high blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney
disease. Most people with these conditions don’t have signs or symptoms.
According to the American Heart Association and stroke statistics one in
every five Americans don’t know they have high blood pressure. Although
a few people with early stage may have dull headaches, dizzy spells, or a
few more nosebleeds than normal, these signs and symptoms usually don’t
occur until high blood pressure has reached a severe or life threatening stage.
You can have high blood pressure for years without any symptoms this is
why visiting your doctor on a routine basis is very important. You’ll likely
have your blood pressure taken as a part of a routine doctor’s appointment. It
should be taken in both arms to determine if there is a difference. You should
ask your doctors for a blood pressure reading at least every two years starting
at age 18. Your doctor will most likely recommend more frequent readings if
you’ve already been diagnosed with high blood pressure or other risk factors
for cardiovascular disease.
Uncontrolled hypertension can damage your blood vessels, as well as organs
in your body. The higher the blood pressure and the longer it goes uncontrolled
the greater the damage. Hypertension can cause heart attacks by causing
hardening and thickening of the arteries which is known as Atherosclerosis. It
can also lead to heart failure due to blood pumping against your vessels. Your
heart muscles thicken and eventually the thickened muscle may have a hard
time pumping enough blood to meet the body’s needs. Another complication
that hypertension can cause is an aneurysm by weakening the blood vessels.
High blood pressure is sometimes called a silent killer because it may have
no outward symptoms for years; internally it can quietly damage the heart,
lungs, blood vessels, brain, and kidneys if left untreated.
Normal blood pressure readings will fall below 120/80. The top number
(systolic) shows the pressure when the heart beats. The lower number
(diastolic) measures pressure at rest between heartbeats, when the heart refills
with blood. High blood pressure is if your readings average 140/90 or higher
for either number. Though you may still have no symptoms. It becomes
more common in both men and women as they age, and more women have
hypertension by the time they reach 65. You have a greater risk if a close
family member has high blood pressure or if you are diabetic. AfricanAmericans are also more likely to develop hypertension and to develop
it at a younger age. Another risk factor is Stress. It can make one’s blood
pressure spike, but there’s no evidence that it causes high blood pressure
as an ongoing condition. Weight, caffeine, and alcohol consumption can
increase your blood pressure.
Ways to lower your blood pressure you may be able to lower your blood
pressure by switching to a better diet. The DASH Diet is a dietary approach
to stop hypertension. It involves eating more fruits, vegetables, wholegrain foods, low-fat dairy, fish, poultry, and nuts. You should eat less red
meat, saturated fats, and sweets. Reducing sodium in the diet can also have
a significant effect. Regular exercise helps lower blood pressure. Adults
should get about 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every week.
That could include gardening, walking briskly, bicycling, or other aerobic
exercise. Muscle-strengthening activities are recommended at least two days
a week and should work all major muscle groups. Diuretics are often the first
choice if diet and exercise changes aren’t enough. Also called “water pills,”
they help the body shed excess sodium and water to lower blood pressure.
Beta-blockers work by slowing the heart rate, which means that the heart
doesn’t have to work as hard. ACE inhibitors reduce the body’s supply of
angiotension II a substance that makes blood vessels contract and narrow.
The result is more relaxed, open (dilated) arteries, as well as lower blood
pressure and less effort for the heart. ARBs are another form of medication
that can help lower your BP. It however can take several weeks to become
fully effective. Instead of reducing the body’s supply of angiotension
II, these drugs block receptors for angiotension. This blockade prevents
the chemical’s artery-tightening effects, and lowers your blood pressure.
Calcium channel blockers slow the movement of calcium into the cells of the
heart and blood vessels. Since calcium causes stronger heart contractions,
these drugs ease the heart’s contraction and relax the blood vessels. These
are medications that doctors will use in order to help your blood pressure
decrease. It is always important to follow your doctor’s instructions and have
appointments routinely.
