BOOMERS AND FRIENDS CELEBRATE Boomers and Beyond invites all supporters and friends in the Gunnison area to a party on Friday, November 21st at 5:30 p.m. in the Gunnison Community Center. Creative appetizers and beverages, catered by Palisades Restaurant, will be free and those in attendance will celebrate the successful conclusion of the Boomer’s led campaign to raise $300,000 for the construction of a new Senior Center addition to the Gunnison Community Center. The drive for funds achieved $356,000 at the end of October with a $150,000 grant from Colorado’s Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) which helped to trigger an additional $38,000 award from the Daniels Fund. The campaign began in August 2013 with an appeal to local donors, organizations, and Gunnison government entities. With generous support from the community in hand, Boomers then was able to apply for grants from other granting organizations. Gunnison Recreation Director Dan Ampietro assisted in the grant writing. Additional grants were made by the Gates Foundation, el Pomar, and the Boettcher Family Foundation. The center will include space for senior activities such as exercise classes, parties, meetings, discussion groups, or card and board games. Boomers now invites the community to join in celebration. The party will include entertainment, and tours of the Gunnison Community Building which will highlight its many on-going activities. WESTERN STATE COLORADO CHAMBER ORCHESTRA On Thursday evening, November 20, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., the Western State Colorado Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Kenneth W. Todd, will present its first full concert of the season in Taylor auditorium. The concert is free and open to the community and public. The program will feature music of American composer Jack M. Jarrett. Dr. Jarrett resides in Asheville, NC and holds degrees in Voice and Composition from the University of Florida, Eastman School of Music and Indiana University. From 1961-1962 he studied advanced composition and conducting at Hochschule fuer Music (Berlin, Germany), under a Fulbright grant. Throughout his career, he has taught music theory and composition, directed choral ensembles, and conducted opera productions and symphony orchestras throughout the United States and abroad. From 1965-1967, he served as Composer in Residence for the Oshkosh, WI public school system as part of the Ford Foundation Composer in Residence program. Dr. Jarrett’s compositions include works for strings, chorus and band and range from solo to concert literature. Featured on the evening’s program will be Dr. Jarrett’s Renaissance inspired “Courtly Dances”, an emotionally charged “Elegy” and a unique arrangement of four American Folk Songs-all for string orchestra. Also on the program, the orchestra will perform music of Felix Mendelssohn and J.S. Bach. Western Music Education student Danielle Austin will conduct the orchestra on Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” from the cantata, Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147. CRESTED BUTTE FILM FESTIVAL New documentary film, The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir We all have our personal stories of how we first heard the songs of the Grateful Dead. For me it was AM radio in the 70s then spending an eye-opening weekend with my older sister on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson. On a beaten old turntable played such Dead classics as “Deal”, “Candyman” and “Operator.” It was a sound instantly recognizable and altogether western and American. It spoke to the heart, this twangy voice coming through, and I was an instantly mesmerized. Along the way, I even got to see some shows: Red Rocks a number of times, outside at The Greek, McNichols Sports Arena, probably the best being Red Rocks where I felt myself to be a cork bobbing along to “Uncle John's Band” in an ocean of Deadheads . A lot of folks in Crested Butte have similar, and probably better stories, and many of them have seen an incredible number of shows. The Dead were a part of many people's upbringing, initiation, and lives. Unfortunately, the magic bus mostly came to an end with the passing of founder and lead guitarist Jerry Garcia in August of 1995. Many of those days are recaptured in the new documentary film, The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir. The title refers not only to a Dead song, but perhaps to Weir's status in the band, as being “the other one” to the more famous, more recognizable Garcia. The film is being presented as part of the monthly Crested Butte Film Series and plays Thursday night, November 20th, 7:00 p.m., at the Center for the Arts. Tickets are $10. The Other One recounts how Weir joined the band at the tender age of sixteen after convincing his parents his personal safety was not at risk. Whether or not Weir was actually lying to his parents will be judged in the eyes of the viewer, but what follows is the melodious, long strange trip of Weir and the band encompassing near fifty years. Weir states rather deadpan in the film, “I took LSD every Saturday I think, pretty much without fail for about a year.” So if at times, he seems a touch out of it, please understand the context. Yet, what emerges largely in the film is that Weir isn't just a rock 'n' roll survivor, he actually got through the Sixties and gained a whole lot of insight from it. He even seems to have figured it out, and by that I mean life itself. By the end of the film, Weir appears the Wise Man himself, and shares that knowledge with us - giving us something we can take for our long, strange trips. Tickets are $10 and are available at cbfilmfest.org, at the Center for the Arts, and at the door. Warren Miller’s No Turning Back Warren Miller began making ski films 65 years ago. The year was 1950, long before many ski resorts such as Crested Butte even existed. Their mission was to get people out to ski - to enjoy this new, fascinating sport that many of us now call our favorite. Miller pioneered the art-form and many have followed in his wake, including local production companies Matchstick and Two Planks. Yet Warren Miller is who we all grew up with, they were the originator, the company that set the standard which others emulate, and they're coming back to town - so get ready to see some great new skiing and fantasize about your season. In honor of this sixty-fifth year of production, the Crested Butte Film Festival, along with the Center for the Arts and the Crested Butte Snowsports Foundation, is proud to present Miller’s latest effort, No Turning Back, which pays homage to 65 years of mountain ski culture. The film is shot around the world: in France, Montana, Alaska and here in Colorado, but also features segments filmed in such exotic locales as Greece and Japan. In fact, the Chamonix segment features local skier Heather Paul Featherman who rips the steep and deep of Mont Blanc, and who will also emcee the show on Saturday night, November 22nd. The film plays at 7:00 p.m. at the Center for the Arts. Tickets are $10 and are available at cbfilmfest.org, at the Center for the Arts, and at the door. The film is narrated by Olympic champion Jonny Mosely and runs ninety-seven minutes long. It will be presented in two parts - with a fifteen minute intermission during which prizes from both Heather Featherman and Warren Miller will be raffled off. Start off your season with another great ski film, Warren Miller’s No Turning Back, Saturday night, November 22nd, 7:00 p.m. at the Center for the Arts. $10 tickets available at cbfilmfest.org. FACULTY ARTIST RECITAL On Friday, November 14, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., Western State Colorado University faculty members Kenneth Todd (violin/viola) and Alicia Belgiovane (piano) will present a recital as part of the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan concert series, hosted by Enid Holden. The church is located at 307 W. Virginia in Gunnison. The recital will feature works of J.S. Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Jules Massenet and John Williams. The works represent “teaching pieces” that Mr. Todd uses with his string students in his studio at Western. Mr. Todd, a Gunnison native, returned to Western in 1999. At Western, he is the director of orchestral activities, the director of applied string studios including violin, viola, cello and bass and instructs music education and G.E. courses in music. Alicia Belgiovane recently retired from teaching Middle School and High School Choral music as well as Elementary music in the Gunnison schools. She is now teaching adjunct within the Department of Music at Western and is the staff accompanist and Concert Choir accompanist. Her children, Lauren and Daniel grew up in Gunnison and live in Seattle, Washington and Fort Collins, Colorado, respectively. Married in 2005, they both enjoy outdoor activities in the Gunnison area as well as spending time with their pets, Hunie, Hobbs and Samson. page 3 40th Annual 30th Annual Sugarplum Festival Saturday, 9:30AM - 3PM Saturday,November November 20 b22rd 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Gunnison Rodeo Grounds, Multi-purpose Building Bring the kids to visit Santa Quality Arts, Crafts, Gift & Holiday Decorating Items LAJ=K9D= FGE9LL=JL@=O=9L@=J ;GGH=JLAJ=K9J=;J9>L=< >GJDA>=KJG9<LJAHK& POTTERS/CLAY ARTISTS: Opening in a small cooperative downtown Gunnison studio for a ceramist, beginning December 2014 or January 2015.
