EXPANDED EMPHASIS ON LEADERSHIP –
EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME
•Trainee
• Neonatologist, medical director, program director,
division chief, or department chair
• Any pediatric professional that cares for the fetus
and newborn
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The AAP gratefully acknowledges support for this workshop
in the form of educational grants from Abbott Nutrition and
Mead Johnson Nutrition.
Neonatologists, even those who are not in formal leadership
positions, must have leadership skills to provide care as
part of a medical team. Organizations, from local hospitals
to state and national bodies such as the AAP Section on
Perinatal Pediatrics and the AAP, also need skilled leadership.
These skills are not typically a point of emphasis during
training or at medical conferences. A major goal of this
workshop will be to provide a variety of opportunities
for attendees to enhance their leadership skills, thereby
assuring that we continue a strong tradition of leadership
in our profession.

SPECIAL CODING SEMINAR
This seminar is designed to instruct neonatologists about
CPT codes and how they are used in daily practice. It will
update participants on the new changes in CPT and ICD-10
codes as they apply to neonatology. Application of codes
to various patient conditions and situations will be explored
using audience response system (ARS) technology. Discussion
will include recommendations from the audience on the
needs and limitations of the current codes. Please indicate on
your registration form if you would like to participate in this
optional educational opportunity.
EXTENDED CODING SEMINAR FOR CODING
AND BILLING PROFESSIONALS
Please join Drs. Ed Liechty and David Kanter from the Perinatal
Section Coding Committee immediately after lunch on Friday
for an afternoon discussion exclusively devoted to issues and
concerns relevant to your practices, such as:
• Role of diagnostic coding for hospital reimbursement:
APR-DRGs
• ICD-10 and 2015 CPT update relevant to Neonatologists
• Role of Hospital Care vs. Well-Baby care coding in normal
newborn nursery
• Focus on copy functionality in hospital-based EHR
• Unique coding scenarios when transferring patients: to
lesser levels of care; to other groups; to other hospitals.
• Delivery room coding: attendance and procedures
• Transport coding: supervision and attendance
• Intensive vs. Critical care coding in NICU
• Working with nurse practitioners
• Using physician documentation to support proper coding
• Complete the online, pre-course self-assessment.
• Attend the 2015 Workshop on Perinatal Practice Strategies.
• Complete the online, post-course self-assessment with
a minimum passing score of 80%.
• The pre- and post-course self-assessments are a bonus
to registered course attendees to enhance the learning
experience at the live activity and provide 10 ABP MOC
Part 2 points in addition to the CME credit earned by
attending the course.
Note: You are not eligible to claim MOC Part 2 credit for this
course-related self-assessment, if you have received MOC Part
2 credit for completing the 2011 AAP NeoReviewsPlus SelfAssessment or for completing the course-related self-assessment
at 2014 AAP NeoPREP course in San Diego, California.
WELCOME RECEPTION
Network with faculty and colleagues to share ideas and
discuss practice issues in an informal setting.
Welcome Reception supported by Abbott Nutrition.
AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS (AAP)
The AAP is an organization of 62,000 primary care
pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists, and pediatric
surgical subspecialists committed to the attainment of
optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being
for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
SECTION ON PERINATAL PEDIATRICS
Membership in the Section on Perinatal Pediatrics is
open to Fellows of the AAP who have an interest in
perinatal medicine. As the AAP home for neonatologists
and other Fellows with this interest, the Section presents
two educational offerings each year. At the National
Conference and Exhibition, the Section presents a 3-day
program highlighting current research (through its abstract
presentations and awards) and current clinically related
topics. The focus of the spring workshop is “how to get the
job done and evaluate the outcomes,” i.e., the organization
of academic, private, or hospital-based practices to carry out
effectively the practice missions of clinical care, education,
administration, and research.
The Section Executive Committee is comprised of
representatives from each of the 10 districts of the AAP.
The Executive Committee meets twice a year in association
with the previously noted meetings and directs the overall
activities within the Section. The Committee on the Fetus
and Newborn (COFN) maintains a close relationship with
the Section, allowing members to communicate with COFN
as they prepare policies and guidelines regarding neonatal/
perinatal medicine. The Section actively collaborates with
other AAP sections and committees and has liaisons with
other organizations dedicated to improved perinatal health.

Jon Edward Tyson, MD, MPH, FAAP
Joe Butterfield was an expert in coordinating
the expertise and energies of his colleagues
and predecessors while applying his own
leadership skills to create new and effective
strategies and solutions. His leadership resulted
in the implementation of systems for health
care education and health care delivery that
saved many lives and improved the well-being
of millions. The neonatal intensive care unit
involves the efforts of a broad, multidisciplinary
team of people. The 17th offering of this lecture
will discuss how to use available evidence to
guide parental counseling and provision of care
for extremely preterm infants.
The Butterfield Lecture is supported by an
endowment from Abbott Nutrition.

the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation
in the activity.
This activity is acceptable for a maximum of 17.75 AAP credits.
These credits can be applied toward the AAP CME/CPD Award
available to Fellows and Candidate Members of the AAP.
The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts
certificates of participation for educational activities certified

Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP)
Continuing Education Guidelines.
DISCLOSURE OF FINANCIAL RELATIONSHIPS AND
RESOLUTION OF CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
The AAP Policy on Disclosure of Financial Relationships and
Resolution of Conflicts of Interest is designed to ensure quality,
objective, balanced, and scientifically rigorous AAP CME
activities. All individuals in a position to influence and/or control
the content of AAP CME activities are required to disclose to
the AAP and subsequently to learners that they either have no
relevant financial relationships or any financial relationships
with the manufacturer(s) of any commercial product(s) and/or
provider(s) of commercial services discussed in CME activities.
All potential conflicts of interest are identified and resolved prior
to an individual’s confirmation of service at an AAP CME activity.
Beyond disclosure of financial relationships, AAP CME faculty are
required to disclose to the AAP and to learners when they plan to
discuss or demonstrate pharmaceuticals and/or medical devices
and/or medical or surgical procedures that involve “off-label” use
of a device or pharmaceutical. The AAP is committed to providing
learners with commercially unbiased CME activities.
