Worcester State Students Clinicians Seminar of Hearing Loss
Wednesday, November 5 at 1pm
Graduate student clinicians from the Worcester State University Speech-Language-Hearing
Center will present an interactive and informative talk about living with hearing loss. The
students will discuss factors that contribute to hearing loss, the effects hearing loss has
quality of life and strategies to enhance communication. Suggestions about how to
communicate effectively with a person with hearing loss will be provided to loved ones and
friends. The presentation will be followed by a short question and answer session. In
addition, attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a self-assessment questionnaire to
see if further evaluation of hearing is warranted. Informational handouts and examples of and
applications for hearing assistive technology will be available for those who are
interested.

OUTREACH UPDATE
Fritzi Petrie
To begin with, this message is written with much love. Yes, you are loved.
It is true of all seasons but especially as we enter into Fall and Winter that
there are more upper respiratory conditions such as colds, bronchitis and
Flu type illnesses. These problems are contagious and are not only serious
for the person suffering the symptoms but for those around them who are
most vulnerable to illness. They are mostly spread by direct contact, bodily discharges and secondary contact such as handling
contaminated materials, air borne (sneezing and coughing), and commonly
through poor or no hand washing. When we do not wash our hands after
using the bathroom then disease causing bacteria are spread on such ordinary surfaces as a door knob.
First of all those of us who frequent the Senior Center tend to be more vulnerable because of age and
multiple health issues which make us more susceptible to contract these seasonal conditions. It is
important to remain at home when experiencing symptoms of illness and get the rest and treatment
necessary to recover. It is also essential that we not spread our contagious diseases to others. So it
truly is a matter of loving yourself enough to take good care of yourself and loving others enough to not
expose them to becoming sick. Remember you are loved and missed when you are not here at the
Senior Center and also loved because you care enough about others to stay away until you are well and
can return to our loving community. Call and let us know when you are not coming in when you have
symptoms that are contagious, especially when we are accustomed to having you here regularly. The
same is true of any place you might decide to go. If you are contagious then your presence could be
harmful to those around you. Thorough hand washing and protected coughing and sneezing are
essential where ever you are both as a protection for you as well as others. Remember you are loved
and your health and well being are very, very important to those of us, your friends, here at the Senior
Center.
