Cyril & Methodius Parish “United in Faith” From the Pastor’s Desk One of the greatest painters of all time, Vincent Van Gogh, died in misery and loneliness. His housekeeper sold his paintings for almost nothing in order to buy something to eat. His genius was not appreciated by contemporaries; however, Van Gogh did die peacefully. He looked at the dusty paintings gathered in his room and said: "I didn't waste my life." He didn't waste his life because he was a man who knew how to take advantage of the talent that God had so generously given him. In today’s Gospel, we listen to Christ's parable of the talents. Again, Jesus reminds us of the well known truth, that everything we possess is a gift from God. Everything we possess our talents, our money, is from God. It's not just my own business what I do in my private life, how I take advantage of the talents given to me by God. After all, I received my talents not just for my own benefit, but also for the benefit of my family, friends and irrevocably for the benefit of the Church and the society as a whole. God prepared a plan for me. He has given my life a specific set of goals to achieve, which only I can accomplish. Is my laziness, lack of work ethic, persistence or reliability in my daily responsibilities just like burying the talents provided by God? Am I not burying my talents when I am comfortable with mediocrity. What am I doing with my talents, when I am not fully utilizing my time to study or work? God does not want us just to use our talents. He wishes for us to fully cultivate our talents through constant and systematic work. We ought to multiply our talents when it is difficult to do so and the results are not immediate. Today's Gospel touches on one more important topic. We often compare ourselves to others. We compare our skills, work ethic, our personal and professional successes. More often than not, we harbor a grudge against God when others have received a greater gift, when others accomplished goals easier. Meanwhile, Jesus clearly tells us that even though He does not bestow it all equally, He does not require the same from all of us. After all, Jesus did not demand five talents from the servant whom received two. Jesus clearly teaches us that each man should be judged by his own standard and that such standard should not be applied to everyone else. Accomplishments that come easy for me may require a lot of hard work and sacrifice from someone else. Let us think about our point of reference to God and His gifts to us. Let's consider the use of our time, talents and November 16, 2014 capital. Am I trying to multiply my talents, which were designated for me and am I sharing them with others? Cardinal Newman wrote: "God designated one of a kind goal to me. No one can accomplish this goal since everyone's goal is unique. That's why I trust God in all circumstances and scenarios in my life. If I am sick, I will try to serve God through my illness, if I'm depressed and sad, I will offer Him my depression and sadness. Everything that God does is intentional. He can prolong my life or curtail it. He knows well the result of His actions. O God, I surrender myself into your hands". And now a few things I want you to know: A special thanks to the 130th Anniversary Banquet Committee for organizing a great party. Thanks to Donna Nowobilski for coordinating the entire effort. We had a great time. Thanks to all who participated in the church celebration and at the banquet hall. We had a full house. A picture report is in today’s bulletin and the acknowledgement of our sponsors. Thank you for your generosity. A financial report will be published as soon as we pay a last bill. Parents and Sponsors of the Confirmation class of 2015: Do not forget about the meeting this Sunday, November 16th at 3:30 PM in the church. On Tuesday, November 18th, the installation of the new Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago will take place. Please keep Archbishop Cupich and retiring Cardinal George in your prayers. The Tree of Love project will be on again this year. On November 22nd, two Christmas trees will be up in the back of church covered with paper ornament tags which are items from the wish lists of children, seniors and families in need. See the bulletin for more details. And finally, I want to congratulate Mr. Neil Rogers, our parish ‘deacon in training’ for his institution into the Ministry of Acolyte, last weekend. He is in his second year of studies to become a deacon. He has two more years to go. Neil, keep up the good work… Thanks for your continuous support and generosity toward SSCM church. Cyril & Methodius Parish School Dear Parents, Our school is an incredible place! We had a very successful “130th Anniversary Week” filled with different events and opportunities for parents to visit the school. A special highlight was the All School Mass on Friday, November 7th. Students, staff and school alumni were all represented and we were honored to have the Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Sr. Mary Paul McCaughey, O.P. in attendance. Afterwards, everyone went into the gym for a beautiful power point presentation. It included the history of our school and parish along with events happening in the world. Each grade level from our school was represented. We finished with cupcakes for all the students. Thank you to everyone who helped with the planning and to everyone who was able to join us during this special week! This past Friday, November 14th, saw us reach the end of our first trimester. Report Cards will be given out during Parent/Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, November 25th. The completed forms containing your assigned time went home this past Thursday. We look forward to seeing all of our parents on that day. This coming week, we will gather as a school family for two very important events. On Thursday, the 20th our annual Talent Show will take place. Many of our students have been working hard and are ready to share their special talents. The next day, we will come together again as a school family to celebrate Thanksgiving with our “Feast”. Both of these activities are great moments for our school and would not be possible without the help and hard work of many parents. Thank you to all from SS. Cyril & Methodius School! Mrs. S. Cyril & Methodius Parish “United in Faith” November 16, 2014 ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO October 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has come to the aid of communities nationwide for over forty years in an effort to eradicate poverty. During World Youth Day, on July 25, OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP 2013, Pope Francis told us, “Never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity.” The CCHD puts these words into action by funding housing, education, the development of job opportunities and other social-justice initiatives. Projects supported by the CCHD go beyond providing for basic needs. They work to build healthy, sustainable futures for communities. For example, for several years now, the Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation (PBMR) has been transforming the way communities engage in restorative justice practices to develop a culture of nonviolence in Chicago’s South Side. The PBMR has also developed a strong leadership model for at-risk youth to facilitate peace circles in areas of high conflict. In addition, the PBMR assists families to address unjust legislation surrounding juveniles without parole. The heart of the PBMR is about building human relationships; it carries on Christ’s mission “to bring glad tidings to the poor…liberty to captives…sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free” (Luke 4:18). This Collection is the primary source of funding for the CCHD’s anti-poverty grants and education programs. Collection funds offer new hope each year to those living in poverty throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Fifty percent of the Collection’s proceeds stay here in our archdiocese to fight poverty in our communities and defend the dignity of our neighbors, and the other 50 percent go to funding programs nationwide. This year, the Appeal Weekend for the CCHD is November 15–16, and the Collection Weekend is November 22–23. Please help us defend human dignity and show Christ’s charity to those in need. To learn more about the CCHD in the Archdiocese of Chicago and the groups it funds, please visit www.ChicagoPeaceAndJustice.org/CCHD. Thank you for your generosity and for your lives of faith. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago ONLINE DONATING SS. Hand Crafted Religious Figurines & Articles Today, in our church, we will have with us representatives of the Catholic Christians Community from Jerusalem and Bethlehem in the Holy Land, who will display olive wood hand crafted religious figurines and articles. The Catholic Christian Community in the Holy Land depends mainly on olive wood carving and tourism. Due to the political conflict and the lack of tourism there, a lot of Christians were forced to leave the Holy Land. Displaying these religious articles abroad and selling them, helps these Christians survive and keeps their community alive. The articles are beautifully hand carved and crafted, and they reflect our faith and love for the Lord. Please take a look after Mass, and get a gift that will be remembered and cherished for yourself or someone dear to you. Lista rzeczy potrzebnych do Kościoła Św. Cyril & Methodius Parish “United in Faith” Drodzy Parafianie, November 16, 2014 będzie wymagało wiele wysiłku i wyrzeczenia. Jeden z największych malarzy wszechczasów - Vincent Van Gogh, umierał w nędzy i opuszczeniu. Dlatego ufam Bogu we wszystkich okolicznościach i sytuacjach mojego życia.
