There are some true artisans out there in NZ and the winner of our recent “Share your project”
competition, Ross Arthur of Custom & Classic Bodies in Taranaki is definitely one of them.
You will see in these few photos the level of craftsmanship going on at his place….The car was
originally constructed by Ross’s father to showcase their coach building business. Their business was
started from scratch, and they viewed it as a way to show potential customers, what they do and just
how well they could do it.
Built on a 1928 Model A chassis, and modelled on 1930’s European styling the car brings together the
very best of that era. It isn’t a copy or reproduction, but a total one off and has absorbed over 14 weeks
of labour to get to this point. The steel sub frame was constructed from scratch using tubular section
and its covered in hand formed 1.6 aluminium sheet. Ross’s dads health hasn’t been great of late and
this has inspired him to get his skates on and complete the project – we are really pleased that Ross
won the draw and with the $500 tooling package heading his way hope that we have assisted him
getting there a little sooner.

THREAD MILLING Q&A
This month we will cover some of the
questions we are often asked regarding
Thread Milling.
Q. What is Thread Milling?
A. Thread Milling is a versatile, reliable and
cost effective process for the manufacture of
internal and external threads. It does, however,
require machines with feed drive and a suitable
3D control, so that the tool can carry out the
necessary helical interpolation movement.
Q. Why should I use Thread Milling over
Tapping?
A. The advantages of Thread Milling include
better chip control, precise thread depth and
a superior thread. Another big benefi t is that
Thread Milling can reduce costs considerably,
since a variety of threads can be produced with
a single tool. This allows you to do:
• Different dimensions with the same pitch;
• Blind and through hole threads;
• Right-hand and left-hand threads;
• Difference Tolerance classes.
Q. What’s the difference between a Solid
Carbide and an Indexable Insert type?
A. The two types cover different applications.
Firstly the Solid Carbide Thread Milling Cutters
are for the production of threads from as small
as M3x0.5. The Indexable Insert Type is used for
bigger threads up to 6.0mm pitch or 4 TPI.
Q. What types of Thread Milling Cutters can
I get?
A. There are two main types of Thread Milling
Cutters available. These are the Solid Carbide
Thread Milling Cutter and the Indexable Insert
type. Thread Milling can also be achieved by
using a single point tool such as an Internal
Threading bar.
Q. Why should I use Solid Carbide Thread
Milling Cutters over inexpensive HSS Taps?
A. The investment you make in Solid Carbide
Thread Mills certainly pays off. The same tool
does different diameter threads, left or right hand
and for different material types. Increased tool
reliability is achieved due to better chip control.
Productivity gains can be made because of high
machining speeds and feeds. There’s reduced
machine wear as no spindle reversal is needed.
Dry machining is possible due to coated cutters.
Regrinding is also possible, achieving tool cost
reduction. These cutters can also be used on
hardened workpieces up to 57 HRc.

Thread Milling large threads requires far less
power to produce a thread than the equivalent tap.
Q. How do I program these cutters?
A. Programming can be done by using the current
machine cycle and calculating your feed rate,
radial infeed etc. Alternatively you can take
all the guesswork out and use the software
available. This software eliminates complicated
programs and calculations. With minimal
input the program selects the optimum cutter,
identifies the best operating parameters, and
then downloads the information to your CNC.
This offers maximum tool life, better chip control,
reduced production time and a perfect thread
from the very first cut. Other advantages built-in
logic that can program a 90o or 180o arc into
your cut when needed, to eliminate vibrations and
selects radial and axial cut options. This software
is available free of charge from Trade Tools Ltd.
Q. How do the Indexable Thread Milling
Cutters compare to the Solid Carbide?
A. The same principle applies, just a different tool.
The insert cutters are ideal for the manufacture
of threads for small to large batches. They are
the most economical option for small batch
sizes. They can be used for all low to high tensile
materials, both short and long chipping. With
only a toolholder and a few inserts it is possible
to produce a diverse range of thread types,
tolerances and dimensions. Easy to load inserts
are double sided and at 40mm long means
increased thread length capacity for most pitches.
The advantages of Indexable Thread Milling
include the high quality inserts and carbide grade
for extra toughness and wear resistance in all
materials, meaning high cutting speeds and better
