Presentation Abstract: BIM for the Mechanical Disciplines
This presentation focuses on the value and uses of BIM to Owners, Architects, Engineers, and the community. It
provides a consistent definition of BIM and provides the Mechanical Engineer with the information needed to begin the
process of adopting and using BIM as an integrated design tool to optimize mechanical systems design, improve
collaboration, minimize coordination errors, and deliver better work products and results. It also provides Mechanical
Engineers with the information they need to include in a BIM before they receive it so that they may take advantage of
its value without having to spend unproductive time cleaning up corrupt or incomplete files and filling in missing
information.

Understanding ships’ rolling characteristics is vitally important to designing a seakindly
vessel, particularly if the design is intended to make a significant departure from the
traditional design lanes. Rolling characteristics are typically described by the vessel’s
roll period as well as showing the roll decrement plot (example inset). The sally test is
used to determine these values, which are also sometimes used to determine the ship’s
mass moment of inertia with respect to rolling. However, a vessel’s rolling response to
the sally test is dependent on water depth, shallower water provides greater damping
and slower roll periods. Failure to account for this effect played a role in the poor
seakeeping performance of the USS Midway after she was blistered in the late 80’s.
Davy will be discussing the model sally tests he has performed and show results
depicting the effect of varying water depth on both roll damping and roll period of
ships.
Davy Hansch is the Publicity Chair, Librarian and T&R Rep of the Hampton Roads
Section of SNAME. He is a recipient of the Society of Allied Weight Engineers Ed Payne
Outstanding Young Engineer Award in May 2010 and the SNAME Hampton Roads

Recommended Practice No. 17 "Weight Distribution and Moments of Inertia for Marine
Vehicles" Issued 8 October 2009. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Ocean
Engineering from Virginia Tech with his thesis focusing on the effect of shallow water on
ships’ rolling characteristics. Other publications: "The Use of Inferential Statistics in
Ships’ Stability Analysis". Presented at the 69th Annual Conference of the Society of
Allied Weight Engineers. May 2010. Co-written with Michael Diggs and Melissa Cooley.

Autonomous aerial formations of multiple quadrotors can be used
for payload manipulation and surveillance, but often require an
external system for computation or control. By having locally
controlled quadrotors, swarm applications can be realized without
the limitations of an external system. In this talk, an algorithm is
proposed to establish a swarm formation of decentralized
controlled quadrotors. First, a method of localization and motion
planning is discussed for a single quadrotor. Next, the behavior of
quadrotor swarm formations with decentralized control is
discussed. Lastly, the future direction of this research is
explained.

About the Presentation:
From the beginning of the use of metals and alloys engineered structures have suffered
from failures. The scientific analysis of metallurgical failures often identifies chronic and
generic problems, and identifies ways to fix these problems. Scientific techniques are
also used to establish fault.
The instruments that are used to analyze aspects of failures are themselves extensions
of physics. This talk will examine some classic materials failures and develop an
understanding of the scientific techniques used in finding the failure causes as well as
examining the attributes and modes of different kinds of failures.

Abstract: M att W ilbur w ill provide an overview of the FI RST programs, and
provide insight as to why FIRST is critical to the future of Hampton Roads. Based on his
experience as head coach, he will discuss challenges and opportunities that FIRST
provides for students, educators, and practicing engineers alike.
Biography: M ATTHEW L. W I LBUR is a Senior Research Engineer for the US
Army Research Laboratory (ARL) where he investigates state-of-the-art helicopter rotor
system technologies. His duties include the analytical investigation of advanced rotor
system concepts, and the planning, preparation, and execution of wind-tunnel tests of
aeroelastically similar, model-scale helicopter rotor and tiltrotor systems in the Langley
Transonic Dynamics Tunnel (TDT). Mr. Wilbur helped to pioneer the use of embedded
piezoelectric-fiber actuators to impart active-twist control on helicopter rotor blades, a
field of study that has proven application for rotorcraft vibration and noise reduction.
For this research, he received the 2001 ARL Achievement Award for Engineering.
In 2007, Mr. Wilbur volunteered to start and coach a FIRST Robotics Competition team,
Triple Helix, at Menchville High School in Newport News, Virginia. Now entering their
8th season of competition, Triple Helix has become one of Virginia’s most successful
FIRST teams, having earned numerous awards and reaching the 2014 FIRST FRC
Championship Final. The team has also been active serving needs in our community
and furthering the education of students with robotics summer camps, teacher
workshops, and the development of a robotics class at Menchville High School. Mr.
Wilbur continues to serve the team as head coach and a mechanical systems mentor.
