Husain Lehri, the director of Super Book House,
approached Yashwant Pitkar, teaching at the Sir
J.J. College of Architecture in Mumbai, to bring out
a book on a contemporary Indian architect whose
approach is different from the run of the mill. Pitkar had no hesitation in choosing Shirish Beri who
in a career spanning almost forty years has built
works ranging from private residences to educational complexes and large public projects across
India. As it turned out, this book is the result of an
extensive collaboration between Lehri, Piktar and
Beri – Pitkar describes the process of making the
book as one of slow and deep unfolding.
What is most interesting about this book is its
structure. Interspersed with the projects are Beri’s
written and sketched expressions. Each set of two
projects is bookended by his illustrated essays
and poetry. The essays are more like collections of
rambling thoughts, posers and anecdotes – seeking connections between nature, art, architecture
and life. There is a seamless rhythm set up in the
book that constantly keeps the reader acquainted with the architect’s outer manifestations in form
of his buildings and his inner thought processes,
integral to that creation. The first essay, »Working
with nature ... towards sustainability« sets a tone
towards not just architecture but life in general.
Beri asks whether man’s relationship with nature
could become a universal archetype for a sustainable future. He advocates an approach towards
architecture that grows out from the place and its
spirit rather than imposed technocratic solutions.
The book features about a dozen projects in
greater detail, well illustrated with clear drawings,
evocative sketches and excellent photographs –
accompanied by the architect’s own analysis of
the design process and governing concerns in
each project. The opening section of the book
contains a note by B. V. Doshi and a foreword by
Christopher Charles Benninger who was Beri’s
mentor when he was a student at the CEPT in
Ahmedabad. The Hirwai Farmhouse in Nathawade for himself, one of his earliest projects, is perhaps the best example of his avowed philosophy:
spaces inspired by nature. The Sanjeevan Primary
School and the Laboratory for the Conservation of
Endangered Species at Hyderabad display Beri’s
playful and unconventional approach towards
space organisation which is at once in harmony
with the site’s topography and natural features.
Projects such as the Dharwad Engineering College
or the Computational Mathematics Laboratory in
Pune display a nuanced sense of structure, construction and meticulousness towards detail. In
the closing section of the book there is an exhaustive list of projects with thumbnails giving a good
idea of the full range of the architect’s work. Accompanying the book is a CD titled »The Unfolding White: Shirish Beri’s search for wholeness«.

Paul Böhm, jüngster Sohn des Pritzker-Preisträgers Gottfried Böhm und Enkel von Dominikus
Böhm, des wohl bedeutendsten Kirchenbaumeisters der frühen Moderne in Deutschland, hat
mit diesem spektakulären Kuppelbau den Typus
der osmanischen Moschee in die Moderne überführt. Kuppel und Minarett dienen der türkischislamischen Kulturgemeinschaft als Identifikationsmerkmale. Zugleich öffnet sich der in einzelne
Segmente aufgebrochene Schalenbau der Nachbarschaft und der Welt. Tagungssäle, Gemeinschaftsräume, Basar, Bibliothek und Museum
bilden einen Komplex, der Rückbindung an das
Herkunftsland, Integration in die neue Heimat und
Gesprächsangebote an seine Umgebung vermitteln soll.
Für Paul Böhm, geboren 1959, Lehrer für Entwurf und Konstruktion an der Fachhochschule
Köln, stellt die Moschee die vorläufige Krönung
seines Werks dar. Es umfaßt eine Fülle anregender Projekte und ausgeführter Bauwerke, darunter Gebäude für Kultur, Hochschule, Verwaltung
und Wohnen. Bei einem Architekten, der einer
Familie von Kirchenbauern entstammt, nimmt
es nicht wunder, daß sich darunter auch ein eindrucksvoller Sakralbau befindet. St. Theodor in
Köln-Vingst ist ein Zentralbau von meditativer
Geschlossenheit und zugleich weiter Öffnung in
einem sozial schwierigen Stadtteil.
Zu den Bezugsfiguren, die für die berufliche
Entwicklung von Paul Böhm eine Rolle spielten,
zählen Tadao Ando, der Meister des samtenen
Betons, Oswald Mathias Ungers, der Liebhaber
der Geometrie, und Peter Zumthor, der Essentialist unter den Zeitgenossen. Wie diese vertraten auch die Lehrer und Architekten, bei denen
Böhm vor der Gründung seines eigenen Büros
im Jahr 2001 gearbeitet hat, ganz unterschiedliche Positionen: Otto Steidle, Anton Schweighofer, Richard Meier. Natürlich ist Paul Böhm der
Tradition der eigenen Architektenfamilie verpflichtet, die er auf sehr persönliche Weise fortsetzt.
Wolfgang Pehnt, der Germanistik, Kunstgeschichte und Philosophie an der Philipps-Universität Marburg, der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität
München und der Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main studierte, hat grundlegende Arbeiten zur deutschen Baugeschichte
verfaßt, darunter Die Architektur des Expressionismus und Deutsche Architektur seit 1900 sowie Architektenmonographien über Gottfried
Böhm, Hans Poelzig, Rudolf Schwarz und Karljosef Schattner. Von 1995 bis 2009 lehrte er
Architekturgeschichte an der Ruhr-Universität
Bochum. Er ist Mitglied von Kunst- und Wissenschaftsakademien in Berlin, Düsseldorf und München und erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen.
The Work of Tadaaki Kuwayama

Tadaaki Kuwayama and his wife, the artist Rakuko Naito, arrived in New York in 1958. Leaving
behind the traditions of Japanese »nihonga painting«, they became part of the cutting edge of the
1960s American art scene. A contemporary of
Minimalists such as Dan Flavin, Walter De Maria
and Donald Judd, Kuwayama soon developed
his own distinctive style, typified by vivid fields of
paint juxtaposed in horizontal and vertical compositions, as well as monochromatic canvases
subdivided by thin strips of chrome. Following
two solo exhibitions at the renowned Green Gallery in 1961 and 1962, his work has been shown
until today in many important galleries and museums throughout the world, not only in the USA,
but also in Germany, Switzerland, Israel and in
his home country, Japan.
»In contrast to the painterly, dramatic style of
abstract expressionism, in Kuwayama’s work we
see none of the emotional push of a Barnett Newman, none of the tonal atmospheres of an Ad
Reinhardt. Kuwayama’s paintings were daring in
their existence: completely stark. Each arrived at
through simplicity, clarity and finally the richness
of their color augmented only when using reflective metallic paints. As Kuwayama explained in a
1964 statement: ›Ideas, thoughts, philosophy, reasons, meanings, even the humanity of the artist,
do not enter into my work at all. There is only the
art itself. That is all.‹ Today Kuwayama’s art retains that spirit of purity. Steadfastly monochromatic, the formula for these works remains linked
to his earlier compositions: single geometric elements that are repeated to form a larger whole.
His use of metallic paint on canvas in the early
paintings of the 1960s and 1970s has given way to
works that use other materials such as aluminum
and titanium. Still a colorist at heart, Kuwayama
achieved the unique color of these paintings by
anodizing the metal, a chemical process that
dyes the surface of the metal so that it reflects
color (something of the 19th-century theories of
the French pointillists like Signac and Seurat
lingers here with color conceived as a scientific
principle). The intensity and luminosity of surface
colors change as the light on the painting shifts
or as the viewer alters his or her own position in

Michio Hayashi, who has studied at the University of Tokyo and at Columbia University in
New York, is an art critic and professor in the
Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University in Tokyo, established in 1949 and widely known for
its all-English program. His research interests include the history of modern and contemporary
art and visual culture as well as aesthetic theory
and criticism.

Konstantin Melnikov (1890–1974) ist zweifellos eine
der herausragenden Gestalten in der Architektur
des 20. Jahrhunderts – dies ungeachtet der Tatsache, daß er früh verstummte, ein nur wenig umfangreiches, nur unzureichend publiziertes Werk
hinterließ, das fast ausschließlich auf Moskau beschränkt blieb, die Stadt, in der er zur Welt kam,
in der er nahezu sein gesamtes Leben verbrachte
und die ihm wenig Dank entgegenbrachte. Aufgewachsen in ärmlichen Verhältnissen, doch hervorragend ausgebildet, erlebte er nach dem Ende der
Wirren in der Folge von Krieg, Revolution und Bürgerkrieg ab Mitte der 1920er Jahre einen fast kometenhaften Aufstieg und setzte sich mit seinen
jeglichem Dogmatismus fremden, ganz eigenständigen und durch und durch künstlerisch aufgefaßten Bauten an die Spitze der jungen sowjetischen Architektur. Rascher noch als sein Aufstieg
vollzog sich sein Fall: Von allen Seiten angefeindet,
konnte er sich, als Stalin Mitte der 1930er Jahre
den baukünstlerischen Spekulationen und Experimenten ein Ende bereitete, nicht gegen den Vorwurf des Formalismus wehren, wurde aus dem Architektenverband ausgeschlossen und mit einem
Berufsverbot belegt.
In den späten 1920er Jahren, auf der Höhe seines Ruhms, hatte er die Möglichkeit, für sich und
seine Familie in Moskau ein Haus zu bauen, das
er dann bis zum Ende seines Lebens bewohnen
konnte. Dieses Haus, eine denkwürdige Symbiose
aus fast bäuerlicher Einfachheit und äußerster Radikalität, gehört zu den beeindruckendsten, überraschendsten und wohl auch enigmatischsten
Werken, die die Architektur des 20. Jahrhunderts
hervorgebracht hat. Seine Simplizität ist eine nur
scheinbare; in Wirklichkeit handelt es sich um ein
hochkomplexes Werk, das die Elemente der Architektur in explizite und unauflösbare Beziehung
zueinander setzt, das eine klare und ganz eigenständige Position bezieht und das wie wenig anderes die Frage aufwirft, wie es wohl mit einem
genuin architektonischen Denken bestellt sein
könnte. Das Buch versucht, in essayistischer Form
die Pfade, die im Werk angelegt sind, aus der Perspektive des Architekten zu verfolgen.
Fritz Barth studierte Architektur in Stuttgart und
Zürich. Er betreibt ein Architekturbüro in Fellbach,
unterrichtet an der TU Darmstadt und ist Verfasser
einer Reihe von Büchern, darunter einer Studie zur
Ikonographie italienischer Gärten des 16. Jahrhunderts (Die Villa Lante in Bagnaia, 2001), einer Monographie über den Barockbaumeister Johann Santini-Aichel (Santini, 2004) und einer Untersuchung
über die Festungsbauten von Francesco di Giorgio
Martini (Zeichen des Wehrhaften. Festungsbauten
von Francesco di Giorgio Martini, 2011).
José Rafael Moneo, born in 1937 in Tudela, Navarra, obtained his architectural degree in 1961
from the ETSAM (Escuela Técnica Superior de
Arquitectura de Madrid). While still a student,
he worked with Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza.
When he had completed his degree, he went to
Hellebæck, Denmark, to work with Jørn Utzon.
From 1984 to 1990 Moneo was chairman of the
architecture department of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
Moneo has won gold medals from the French
Academy of Architecture and the International
Union of Architects, the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize from the American Academy of Arts
and Letters and the Spanish government’s highest honor, the Gold Medal for Achievement in
the Arts. In 1996 he won the Pritzker Prize in architecture, and in 2003 he accepted the British
Royal Medal of Architecture. Mohsen Mostafavi,
chairman of the Architectural Association, noted
that Moneo »is the closest embodiment we have
of the idea of the Renaissance architect – practitioner, teacher, theorist, critic, deeply knowledgeable on the arts.«
In Spain his mark is seen everywhere – from
the airport in Seville to the high-speed-train station in Madrid, the National Bank of Spain and
the Museo del Prado. These projects represent
the best of Spanish efforts to build a 21st-century public infrastructure. They also exemplify
Moneo’s devotion to the culture and architectural
history of his native land, showing a refined sensitivity to site and context.
Outside Spain, Moneo’s most notable projects – the Davis Museum and Cultural Center
at Wellesley, Massachusetts, the Audrey Jones
Beck Building at the Museum of Fine Arts in
Houston, Texas, the New Studios Building at the
Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills,
Michigan, the Museum of Modern Art and Architecture in Stockholm and the Arenberg Campus
Library of the Catholic University of Leuven in
Louvain-la-Neuve – have attracted much attention. The new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles has drawn more than one
million visitors in the first year it opened.
Juan Antonio Cortés has a doctorate in architecture from the ETSAM and is professor of architectural composition at the ETSAV (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Valladolid). Duccio Malagamba collaborates with such prominent
architects as Alvaro Siza, Herzog & de Meuron,
Rafael Moneo and Coop Himmelb(l)au, among
many others. After graduating in architecture from
Genoa University, he moved to Barcelona to work
as an architect. In 1991 he decided to devote himself entirely to architectural photography.
The ongoing paradigm change in regard to the
use of energy, its efficient usage and the consumption of resources is giving rise to new light
systems and lighting appliances. This development might also lead to the use of light as a
building material in its own right, comparable to
traditional building materials, making it possible
to create light space productions – something
that did not seem feasible up to now due to the
high cost of energy and of light systems.
The goal of this book is to develop temporary
light spaces that re-interpret the existing urban
environment on a seasonal basis or over a cycle
of several years. As a result, the city will literally
appear in a new light. Strollers in the city streets
will experience their familiar environment in a new
way. Illuminated planes interlacing with planes
made by linear fields of light beams will create
immaterial material space experiences: still lifes
of light within which one can move about and
light choreographies that move barely noticeably,
creating still lifes in motion.
Current research aims at exploring, imagining
and inventing stand-alone spatial structures of
light, adding on to and transforming existing
spaces, creating a new spatial awareness that
may enable people to experience urban space in
a different way. Similar to the process of architectural design, where haptic built volumes create
interspaces, the light spaces that are presently
being designed make these interspaces visible
and allow urban dwellers to experience unexpected spatial constellations.
The discourse in this book starts with essays
introducing aspects of light spaces, including the
following: Christian Bartenbach on the perception
of light as something that creates space; Niels
Gutschow on the ritual dimension of light, an element in the history of creation; Samuel Widmer
on light in near-death experiences; Aldous Huxley on light as the messenger from a world we
perceive on an unconscious level; Jun’ichiro Tanizaki on the world of the shadow and Tadashi
Endo on movement as a relation between time
and space in Butoh, the Japanese dance of
darkness. The discourse concludes with documents on light spaces by Wolfgang Rang collected over a period of 30 years showing how these
light spaces were regarded in the writings of contemporaries, including Max Bächer on the dawn
of a new era; Hans-Peter Schwarz on the deconstruction of space by light; Jürgen Hasse on light
as a discourse fragment of public space; Manuel
Cuadra on red luminescence; and Antonio de
Campos on shadow as an expression of light.

In recent decades, Carlo Scarpa’s relevance has
been steadily on the rise. Strategies of adaptive
reuse and adjustments to existing fabric are consistent with a growing agenda of sustainability and resourcefulness. At a time when architects have to
develop aesthetic systems following an integrative
approach treating existing urban and built context
as a narrative to continue, Scarpa’s œuvre remains
a source of inspiration. Scarpa’s use of architectural
layering analysed and explained in this book could
serve as a contemporary strategy that is nonhierarchical and free of stylistic idioms.
Buildings such as the Castelvecchio in Verona
show that architecture is capable of communicating its own history, that it carries meaning while
developing a contemporary dynamic of its own.
Scarpa’s layered architecture makes time-related
sedimentation of material and content readable. It
is especially at points of transition and joints that
layering becomes an element that elucidates the
tectonic and spatial qualities of the building.
In this book Anne-Catrin Schultz presents her
research related to the phenomenon of layering in
Scarpa’s architecture. Layering describes the physical composition of built layers defining space while
including the presence of cultural references and
associations.
Scarpa’s work is an embodiment of multidimensional layering and a focal point for architectural
movements of this time that share a similar approach. In most buildings, the principle of layering
may be regarded as something that is part of the
nature of construction. Functional conditions call
for separate planes, elements or »layers«, some of
which provide the structure while others take care
of the protection from weather and climate. However, architectural layering goes beyond the mere
fulfillment of technical requirements – the principle
of layering may be used as formative method that
allows elements of different origins to be combined
into a nonhierarchical whole. Layering is complex
and creates references to our world at large.
The first part of the book examines Scarpa’s intellectual roots and puts them in perspective with
relevant examples of architecture theory, such as
Gottfried Semper’s theory of clothing. The second
part displays an analysis of three projects, the
Castelvecchio and the Banca Popolare in Verona
and the Querini Foundation in Venice.
Anne-Catrin Schultz studied architecture in
Stuttgart and Florence. Following postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she practiced for several years at Turnbull
Griffin Haesloop and Skidmore Owings & Merrill
in Francisco. She has taught at the University of
California in Berkeley, the California College of the
Arts and the San Francisco City College in San
Francisco. In 2013, she joined the faculty at Wentworth Institute of Technology to teach architecture
history and theory.

Als einen »schönen Traum« bezeichnete Karl
Friedrich Schinkel seine Entwürfe für eine Palastanlage auf der Akropolis in Athen und für das
Schloß Orianda auf der Insel Krim. 1834 und 1838
entstanden, sind es die letzten großen Projekte
Schinkels, in denen dieser wie in einem Vermächtnis sein Ideal von Architektur in brillanten
Zeichnungen und Aquarellen darstellte. Sowohl
die Formensprache der klassizistischen Architektur als auch die Qualität der Darstellung sind hier
auf ein kaum zu überbietendes Niveau gebracht.
Wie hoch Schinkel diese unausgeführt gebliebenen Entwürfe einschätzte, zeigt sich darin, daß er
sie in seiner Publikation Werke der höheren Baukunst für die Ausführung erfunden (Potsdam 1840
bis 1842) in kolorierten Lithographien drucken ließ.
Diese Lithographien werden in großformatigen
Reproduktionen vorgestellt, ergänzt um die nicht
minder spektakulären Rekonstruktionen der beiden Plinius-Villen, Tuscum und Laurentinum.
Auch in diesen Werken, die einen Höhepunkt in
der langen Geschichte der Rekonstruktionen der
beiden nur literarisch überlieferten Villen bilden,
beweist Schinkel seine eindrucksvolle Fähigkeit
der Darstellung und Vermittlung seiner architektonischen Ideen. Denn bei den Rekonstruktionen
der Plinius-Villen geht es Schinkel, wie bei den
Entwürfen für den Königspalast auf der Akropolis und für das Schloß Orianda, neben der archäologischen Exaktheit und dem Erfüllen von vorgegebenen Bauprogrammen darum, die Möglichkeiten von Architektur jenseits der reinen Utilität
auszuloten. Beim Schloßprojekt auf der Akropolis
liegt sein Hauptaugenmerk auf der Interaktion
des Neubaus mit den erhaltenen Resten der Propyläen und des Parthenon. Beim Orianda-Projekt
ist es ein die Anlage bekrönender verglaster Aussichtspavillon in Form eines Tempels, in dem das
Selbstverständnis von Architektur so deutlich
ausgesprochen ist wie vielleicht nie zuvor.
Klaus Jan Philipp studierte Kunstgeschichte,
Archäologie und Geschichte in Marburg und
Berlin. Er promovierte über mittelalterliche Architektur in Südwestdeutschland. Von 1988 bis
1990 war er freier Mitarbeiter am Deutschen Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt am Main und organisierte dort die Ausstellung »Revolutionsarchitektur. Ein Aspekt der europäischen Architektur um 1800«. Philipp ist Professor für Architekturgeschichte an der Universität Stuttgart. Seine Forschungen zur klassizistischen Architektur
legte er 1997 in seiner Habilitationsschrift Um
1800: Architekturtheorie und Architekturkritik in
Deutschland zwischen 1790 und 1810 vor.

Although Berlin’s history encompasses more
than eight hundred years and its beginnings
reach back as far as the 12th century, its present-day urban image is essentially characterised by structures and building measures from
the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Four
»modern« development phases, whose respective qualities were vastly unalike, played a determining role in this image: during the second half
of the 19th century, against the backdrop of industrialisation, Berlin’s rise from a comprehensible Prussian capital and residence to an expanding metropolis of the German Empire; the

day, the ongoing structural and spatial connections as well as architectural refinements required for Berlin’s role as capital of the new
Federal Republic.
The contents of this architectural guide vividly stand out against the backdrop of Berlin’s recent history – a course of events as multifaceted
as it was, in part, excessive, up until today. This
publication deliberately focuses on the city’s last
100 years when, generation by generation, Berlin daringly and almost obsessively rediscovered
itself architecturally. The selected examples not
only convey a visually impressive and representative longitudinal progression, but also in which
form the most provocative of social movements,
changes and breaks presented themselves in
the architecture of the city.
With texts and images, the book presents
466 architectural works built from 1907 to the
present day. The author’s choices support the
greater intention to present what can now be
deemed contemporary, typical and exemplary
about every period of Berlin’s diverse, irregular
and amazingly rich architectural history. That
the examples offered here blatantly declare
themselves products of the »modern age« and
»Neues Bauen« permits them to be understood
as a »manifesto in images« which consolidates
to a 20th-century architectural collage, whose
quality and wide range grant it an unquestionable uniqueness.
Rolf Rave is an architect practising in Berlin
together with his wife Roosje. He comes from a
family of architects and art historians; his father,
Paul Ortwin Rave, director of the Berlin Nationalgalerie until 1950 and director of the Berlin Kunstbibliothek from 1950 to 1961, was the editor of
Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Lebenswerk from 1939
until his death in 1962.

In a letter from London, dated 9 November 1815,
Antonio Canova wrote: »... Here I am in London,
dear and best friend, a wonderful city. ... I have
seen the marbles arriving from Greece. Of the
basreliefs we had some ideas from engravings,
but of the full colossal figures in which an artist
can display his whole power and science, we
have known nothing. ... The figures of Phidias
are all real and living flesh, that is to say are
beautiful nature itself.«
With his admiring words for the famous Elgin
Marbles Canova, one of the last great artists embodying the grandiose heritage of the classical
world, gave at the same time an appropriate description of his own artistic aims.
It was his half-brother who decided to assemble most of Canova’s plaster originals and to
place them in a museum he had built in the garden of his brother’s home in Possagno, a small
village north of Venice, where the artist saw the
light of day on 1 November 1757. This basilicalike building erected in 1836 now holds the great
majority of Canova’s compositions.
To commemorate the bicentenary of his birth,
the Venetian authorities decided to have an extension added to the overcrowded basilica, and
they commissioned the Venetian architect Carlo
Scarpa for this delicate task. Scarpa composed
a small, but highly articulated building that is in
a strong contrast to the Neoclassical, monumental basilica.
The subtly designed sequence of spaces is
unique even among Scarpa’s so many extraordinary museum interiors as the architect was here
in the rare position to compose the spaces as
well as the placings of the exhibits. The placing
of the sources of natural light which infuses the
plaster surfaces with the softness of real life is in
itself a rare achievement and it took an equally
rare photographer to record such symphonies in
white in all their magic.
The late Stefan Buzas was an architect who
has studied the work of Scarpa for many years.
He was a member of the Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry of the Royal Society of Arts
in London. Judith Carmel-Arthur took her degree
in architectural history and subsequently studied
at the Courtauld Institute and Warburg Institute
(University of London). She is a lecturer in design
and architectural history at Kingston University
and the University of Southampton and is presently completing her PhD in the history of design.
Richard Bryant is one of the best-known architectural photographers, working all over the
world. He is the only photographer with an honorary fellowship of the Royal Institute of British
Architects.
The building of the National Library of Latvia is a
landmark of the city of Riga, a spatial symbol and
architectural icon, created by one of the 20th-century-renowned modernists – the Latvian-born
American architect Gunnar Birkerts. His metaphorically saturated and expressionist architecture has
established its permanent place in the history of
contemporary architecture. The unique creative
style of Birkerts stems from his deep cultural roots
in Latvia, his architectural studies in Germany after
World War II and the first years of architectural
practice in the USA learning from Eero Saarinen
and Minoru Yamasaki.
Birkerts was invited to Latvia to design the National Library as early as in 1988. Three years later,
Latvia restored its independence and the formation of a new state delayed accomplishment of
Birkerts’ ambitious idea for 25 years. The idea, the
design and technology changed as changed the
times becoming a symbol of a new and free state.
Thanks to its content and concurrent processes
for reestablishment of the national state the building acquired a symbolic and meaningful name: the
»Castle of Light«. In 1999, the idea for construction of the library received the official UNESCO patronage and support, the design and construction
of the building have been evaluated by a panel of
prominent UNESCO experts.
The pyramidal structure, which rises 68 m high,
is a place of cognition equipped with state-of-theart technology where up to 8 million units of national printed materials can be stored. It has been
the most significant investment in cultural infrastructure since the establishment of the Latvian
state and is one of the largest cultural buildings in
Northern Europe in the 21st century. The library
can serve simultaneously 1000 visitors. A 400seat concert hall / auditorium and transformable
meeting rooms of various sizes are suitable venues for conferences, congresses and concerts.
Taking advantage of modern technology, the
National Library of Latvia and nearly 900 other
libraries in Latvia are interlinked within the Network
of Light – a single network of digital resources
available on the internet throughout the country
which was set up with the support from the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Janis Dripe studied architecture at Riga Technical University. From 1990 to 1996 he taught at the
faculty of architecture of Riga Technical University.
From 1993 to 1995 he was minister of culture and
from 1996 to 2006 the ambassador of Latvia in
Sweden. Until recently he was chief architect of
the city of Riga. Indrikis Sturmanis has been a
leading Latvian architectural photographer since
the 1970s. He started his career as a press photographer and then turned to his present field of
action.

weiten Bewegungsräumen, mit ihrem menschlichen Maßstab in Proportion und Größe der Vorstellung von freizügig-akademischem Forschen,
Lehren und Lernen in idealer Weise entspricht.
Schweizer, geboren 1890 und gestorben 1965,
Professor für Städtischen Hochbau an der Technischen Hochschule in Karlsruhe, zählt zu den wegweisenden Architekten des 20. Jahrhunderts, der
durch seine Nürnberger Bauten Ende der 1920er
Jahre, darunter die Stadionanlage und der Milchhof, sowie durch das Prater-Stadion der Stadt
Wien internationale Anerkennung und Bedeutung
gewann und der sich in den 1930er Jahren, in
denen es ihm verwehrt war, zu bauen, mit grundlegenden Fragen zu Architektur und Städtebau
befaßte – Gedanken, die er nach dem Zweiten
Weltkrieg für Vorschläge zur Neuordnung zerstörter Städte wieder aufgreifen konnte. In seinem
letzten Werk, dem Kollegiengebäude II, konzentriert sich, quasi als Quintessenz eines reichen
schöpferischen Lebens, Schweizers Anspruch an
architektonischer Form und Funktion auf auch
heute noch überzeugende Weise.
Immo Boyken ist emeritierter Professor für Baugeschichte und Architekturtheorie in Konstanz,
dessen besonderes Interesse der Architektur des
späten 19. und des 20. Jahrhunderts gilt. Er war
maßgebend an der Monographie über Egon Eiermann beteiligt, verfaßte unter anderem die Monographie über Otto Ernst Schweizer und schrieb
zuletzt über die Kirche in der Donau City in Wien

Ivano Gianola is one of the founding members
of the so-called Ticino School. Like the other significant figures of this legendary school he is primarily concerned with urban-development and
architectonic quality of building in the Canton of
Ticino. The extensive œuvre that has sprung from
this concern has produced a plethora of intuitively designed, distinctive buildings.
After more than ten years of planning and
building, Gianola’s most extensive project and at
the same time the largest project of the Canton
of Ticino to date is now open to the public. The
new Cultural and Art Centre of Lugano is located
directly on the shore of Lake Lugano. The spacious and spatially differentiated new building is
an architectonic hybrid that combines a museum
for contemporary art, a convention centre, various
restaurants and cafés as well as a theatre under
one roofscape. The theatre is not only equipped
as an optimal venue for operas and theatrical performances, but can also be used as a concert
hall or convention auditorium. Moreover the urban
configuration of the new complex functions as a
most convincing contemporary gateway to the
largest city in Ticino.
This Opus volume tries to decipher not only
the obvious and hidden urban-planning aspects
of this major project but also its multilayered formal esthetic and haptic connotations. Thereby
the book pays tribute to a high point of contemporary Ticino architecture and to Ivano Gianola’s
late masterpiece.
Frank R. Werner was professor of history and
architecture theory at the Staatliche Akademie
der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart from 1990 until
1994 and director of the Institut für Architekturgeschichte und Architekturtheorie at the Bergische
Universität in Wuppertal from 1993 until his retirement in 2012. He studied painting, architecture
and history of architecture in Mainz, Hanover and
Stuttgart. Christian Richters studied communication design at the Folkwangschule in Essen. He
is one of the most sought-after architecture photographers in Europe. To date he has been represented in the Opus series by nine volumes, including ones about the embassies of the Nordic
countries and the Bode Museum in Berlin, the
Nieuwe Luxor Theater in Rotterdam and the BMW
Welt in Munich.

The fundamental significance of the Weissenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart for the history of early
modern architecture should not be underestimated. Almost all the influential architects of the
20th century built their proposed solutions in response to the theme »a home for modern city
dwellers« on the beautifully located slope on the
north side of Stuttgart. The choice of architects
and the fact that a project of this type could
be implemented at all so few years after World
War I and the inflation, is one of the outstanding
characteristics of this building exhibition.
»The German Werkbund is aware and points
out most emphatically that so important a task
can only be successful and have a major impact
if it is not only carried out in a technically flawless manner but also creates trendsetting architectonic solutions. The Werkbund therefore recommends to the city of Stuttgart that leading
architects be commissioned with planning the
exhibition and thus assuming a leading role in
the construction of modern housing both in Germany and abroad.« This memorandum, dated
January 1926, concludes with the following appeal: »It is now up to the municipal council
whether this event, so crucial for the promotion
of our housing, will be able to take place in
Stuttgart in 1927.« An interesting situation thus
arose: members of the municipal council had to
decide on the merits of this pioneering project.
The majority voted for it. The result: 25 yes votes,
11 no votes and 6 abstentions.
How did this project ever come to Stuttgart,
anyway? What made it possible was a favorable
constellation of both personnel and chronological circumstances. Gustaf Stotz must be regarded as the project’s initiator. It was he who managed to fire up the enthusiasm of the leadership
of the German Werkbund and of the city about
the project. It is also thanks to him that Mies van
der Rohe undertook to be its artistic director.
Mies and many of the architects of the Weissenhofsiedlung were relatively young and not established. They had a fine reputation in avantgarde circles, but hardly outside them. Moreover,
in the German Werkbund the entire project was
regarded as not really important – a sort of practice piece for a »world building exhibition« that
would take place in Berlin in 1930.
Karin Kirsch studied and worked under Herbert Hirche. She taught architectural history at
the Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart and devoted intensive research not only to the Weissenhofsiedlung but also to Japan’s influence on
modern architecture.

The Imaginary Orient. Exotic Buildings
of the 18th and 19th Centuries in Europe

In the 18th century the idea of the landscape garden, which had originated in England, spread all
over Europe. The geometry of the Baroque park
was abandoned in favour of a »natural« design.
At the same time the garden became the »land of
illusion«: Chinese pagodas, Egyptian tombs and
Turkish mosques, along with Gothic stables and
Greek and Roman temples, formed a miniature
world in which distance mingled with the past.
The keen interest in a fairy-tale China, which
was manifested not only in the gardens but also in the chinoiseries of the Rococo, abated in
the 19th century. The increasing expansion of the
European colonial powers was reflected in new
exotic fashions. While in England it was primarily
the conquest of the Indian subcontinent that captured the imagination, for France the occupation
of Algiers triggered an Orient-inspired fashion
that spread from Paris to encompass the entire
Continent and found its expression in paintings,
novels, operas and buildings. This »Orient«, which
could not be clearly defined geographically, was
characterised by Islamic culture: It extended
around the Mediterranean Sea from Constantinople to Granada. There, it was the Alhambra
that fascinated writers and architects.
The Islamic styles seemed especially appropriate for »buildings of a secular and cheerful character«. In contrast to ancient Egyptian building
forms, which, being severe and monumental,
were preferably used for cemetery buildings, prisons or libraries, they promised earthly sensuous
pleasures. The promise of happiness associated
with an Orient staged by architectural means was
intended to guarantee the commercial success of
coffeehouses and music halls, amusement parks
and steam baths.
But even extravagant summer residences and
middle-class villas were often built in faux-Oriental styles: In Brighton, the Prince Regent George
(George IV after 1820) built himself an Indian palace; in Bad Cannstatt near Stuttgart, a »moorish«
refuge was erected for Württemberg’s King Wilhelm I; and the French town of Tourcoing was
the site of the Palais du Congo, a bombastic
villa in the Indian Moghul style that belonged to
a wealthy perfume and soap manufacturer.
Stefan Koppelkamm studied at the Gesamthochschule in Kassel, and after a longer stay in
the USA he now lives in Berlin and teaches communication design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee. Since the publication of his book
Gewächshäuser und Wintergärten im 19. Jahrhundert (Stuttgart, 1981), he has repeatedly engaged
with historic and current aspects of architecture.

Den hohen Anspruch fürstlicher Landschaftskunst formulierte Lenné in einem Anflug von
Ungeduld mit seinem königlichen Auftraggeber,
der wieder einmal die Geldmittel beschnitten
hatte: »Ew. Majestät begreifen noch immer nicht
das Geistreiche meiner Idee«. Der vorliegende
Band versucht eine Annäherung an das »Geistreiche der Idee«, das den Gärten der Hohenzollern in Preußen in besonderer Weise innewohnt.
Hillert Ibbeken war bis zu seiner Emeritierung
Professor für Geologie an der Freien Universität
Berlin und beschäftigte sich zeitlebens mit Landschafts- und Architekturphotographie. In der
Edition Axel Menges erschien 2001 sein zusammen mit Elke Blauert herausgegebenes Buch
Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Das architektonische Werk
heute /The architectural work today. Im selben
Verlag folgten, von ihm allein herausgegeben, in
gleicher Aufmachung Monographien über Ludwig Persius (2005) und Friedrich August Stüler
(2006) sowie, unter anderem, Schlösser der
Weserrenaissance / Castles of the Weser Renaissance, zusammen mit Michael Bischoff herausgegeben (2008), und Das andere Italien /The

and Calabria (2011). Katja Schoene ist Kunsthistorikerin und Museologin. Sie war Mitarbeiterin
des National Trust in den Landschaftsgärten in
Stowe, Buckinghamshire, sowie der Stiftung
Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg in Potsdam. Als freie Autorin befaßte
sie sich u.a. mit Schloß Sanssouci, Friedrich
August Stüler und dem »Pommerschen Kunstschrank«.
Thema dieses Buches ist die Erinnerung. Woran
erinnert man sich? An freudige Ereignisse denkt
man gern zurück und möchte sie wieder und wieder durchleben. Dagegen sind Kriege, Genozide,
Flucht, Vernichtung und Epidemien Ereignisse,
an die man sich mit Grauen erinnert und die man
zuweilen aber auch aus seinem Gedächtnis verdrängt.
Schließlich ändern sich die Zeiten, und man
beginnt alles, was war, zu vergessen. Der Blick
auf die Welt droht in der Gegenwart verlorenzugehen.
Denkmäler arbeiten gegen das Vergessen an.
Bis zum Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts waren es
Marmorbüsten, Reiterfiguren, Bronzeskulpturen,
Säulen, Tore und Grabmäler, die im öffentlichen
Stadtraum und in Parks aufgestellt wurden. Helden und ihre Taten aus militärischen, politischen
und kulturellen Bereichen wurden auf diese Weise
geehrt und die Erinnerung an sie wachgehalten.
Ihr Ziel bestand darin, die angesprochenen Menschen zu erziehen und zu ermahnen. Somit hatten sie sowohl eine Vorbild- als auch eine Unterwerfungsfunktion.
Heute, in unserer demokratisch-pluralistischen
Gesellschaft, in der moderne Kommunikationsmittel alle Entwicklungen rapide beschleunigen,
ist die Definition des Denkmals als feierliches,
massives Zeichen der Erinnerung, das historische
Momente wiederaufleben läßt, obsolet geworden.
Täglich werden wir von den Massenmedien mit
einer Unzahl von Bildern der Vergangenheit und
Gegenwart überflutet. Millionen von Menschen
können so an vergangenen und gegenwärtigen
Ereignissen teilnehmen. Es gibt geradezu unendlich viele kollektive Erlebnisse und ebensoviele Zeichen der Erinnerung. Was kann unter
dieser Voraussetzung noch als Denkmal bezeichnet werden?
Mit dieser und anderen Fragen zum Thema
Denkmal setzt sich der Autor in seinem Buch auseinander und präsentiert seine tiefe Einsicht in
alle Bereiche der Architektur- und Kunstgeschichte, der Philosophie sowie der neuen Medien. Das
Buch stellt einen Gewinn für jeden Leser dar, der

Hans Dieter Schaal ist Bühnenbildner, Architekt, Landschaftsgestalter, Philosoph und Utopist
in einem. Seine Werke, von denen die Mehrzahl
durch die Edition Axel Menges veröffentlicht wurden, haben inzwischen ein Publikum weit über
sein Heimatland hinaus gefunden. Der Autor lebt
und arbeitet in Attenweiler bei Biberach an der
Riß.
In den Jahren nach 1933 waren mehrere hundert Architekten durch die nationalsozialistische
Diktatur zur Emigration aus Deutschland gezwungen. Siebzig bis achtzig von ihnen gelangten
nach Großbritannien – zum Teil prominente Vertreter der Moderne wie Walter Gropius, Erich
Mendelsohn, Erwin Gutkind, Arthur Korn und
Marcel Breuer, aber auch weniger bekannte Architekten, die sehr unterschiedlichen Positionen
verpflichtet waren.
In Großbritannien trafen sie auf eine Architekturszene, die ihnen überraschend konservativ
erschien. Nur ein kleiner Kreis von Architekten,
Bauherren und Fachpublizisten stand modernen
Entwurfsmethoden, Konstruktionsweisen und
Formensprachen aufgeschlossen gegenüber. In
dieser für sie meist fremden Umgebung Fuß zu

Erich Mendelsohn gewann schon wenige Monate nach seiner Ankunft in Großbritannien gemeinsam mit Serge Chermayeff den prestigeträchtigen Wettbewerb für den De-La-Warr-Pavillon im südenglischen Seebad Bexhill (1933–35).
Das Kurhaus zählt zu den bedeutendsten Zeugnissen der klassischen Moderne auf den Britischen Inseln. Auch das von Walter Gropius in
Partnerschaft mit E. Maxwell Fry entworfene
Impington Village College (1936–39) erfuhr starke
Beachtung und beeinflußte die Entwicklung der
einheimischen Architektur. Darüber hinaus reicht
das Spektrum der Aufgaben, mit denen die Emigranten sich auseinandersetzten, von Wohnhäusern über Verkehrs- und Industriebauten bis zu
Gebäuden für jüdische Gemeinden und zur Ausstellungs- und Ladengestaltung. Auch als Hochschullehrer, Wissenschaftler und Publizisten hinterließen deutsche Architekten zu dieser Zeit in
Großbritannien Spuren.
Das Buch bietet einen Überblick über das
Thema und stellt ausgewählte Bauten im Detail
vor. Bislang überwiegend unveröffentlichte Dokumente aus dem Nachlaß von Walter Gropius ermöglichen zudem einen unmittelbaren Einblick

Andreas Schätzke lehrt Bau- und Stadtbaugeschichte an der Technischen Universität Kaiserslautern. Zu seinen Forschungsgebieten zählen Architektur und Städtebau im Nachkriegseuropa und die Beziehungen zwischen Architektur,

This book examines the application of the principle
of layering in architecture, its mechanics, possible
application and meaning. Layering is widely used
in the discussions of the 20th and 21st centuries
architecture but rarely defined or examined. Layering bridges the tectonics of structure and skin, offers a system for the creation of different architectural spaces over time and functions as a design
principle without hierarchy. Three types of layering
are identified: a chronological sedimentation of
planes materializing changes over time (temporal
layering), the additive sequence of spaces (spatial
layering), and the stratification of individual planes
(material layering).
Like a palimpsest, historic cities frequently reveal temporal layering and aspects of change over
time, a condition familiar to archaeologists who
study layer upon layer of remnants of civilization,
including architectural remains and urban organization. In historic cities, one can read at least the
most recent layers to determine a physical chronology of the city's history; contemporary architects add strata of the 21st century. Cities are
composed of several layers, offering a complex
understanding of time in which a view of the present includes also the perception of the past.
At a building scale, layers can be part of the
spatial composition, multiple elements of walls,
the skin, the structure or decorative and narrative
elements. Just as the position and order of geological strata contain information related to their
age, formation, and origin, the position and form
of architectural layers come with information about
their function, intellectual scope, and provenance.
The possible elements of such an architectural
strategy include materials, light, water, and color
as well as associations, memories, and analogies
embedded in the layers or in the voids between
them.
Material layering is based on a perceived separation of spatial enclosures into floor, wall, and
ceiling or roof elements and combinations thereof.
Individual elements may consist of multiple planes
fulfilling a series of specific functions. The architectural enclosure can represent the physical wrapper
of a building and might transport the structure’s
narrative, tectonic information, cultural expression,
the architect’s design intent, and other topics that
might be embedded.
Anne-Catrin Schultz studied architecture in
Stuttgart and Florence. Following post-doctoral
research at the MIT in Boston, she worked for
several years with Turnbull Griffin Haesloop and
SOM in San Francisco. While developing her own
practice, she has taught at the University of California in Berkeley, the California College of the
Arts and the Academy of Arts University in San
Francisco. In 2013 she joined the Department of
Architecture at Wentworth Institute of Technology
in Boston.

The global resources situation and the climate crisis are amongst the biggest challenges faced by
mankind today. In the years to come, these issues
will no doubt have an influence on societal evolution, on urban and rural land development, and
how we define our cultural identities. These and
related issues will be reflected in the world of architecture. In recent years many countries with high
energy consumption have made the energy-related requirements for buildings more stringent; the
new rules apply to the resources used for construction as well as to those used in the operation
of buildings. In the future, these new requirements
will have a major impact on the design of buildings.
It will not be sufficient merely to increase the insulation thickness or to make the building envelope
more airtight. Solutions of this type have an adverse impact on the architectural design, on the
construction practices, on the indoor environment
and on options for making buildings flexible so that
they can be adapted for diverse uses over time.
Equally important in terms of its impact on architectural quality is the challenge posed by the continuous growth of industrialisation. The move from
craft-based construction methods to computercontrolled production processes now used in industrialised manufacturing has resulted in strict
standards, established at design level, being imposed on the process as it takes place on the
building site, creating an »assembly architecture«
that no longer depends on the locally available
materials, on local cultural traditions or on the
specific physical context.
In this book, ideas, design principles and practices that relate to tectonics in architecture are explored, and a series of themes are discussed in relation to various concepts of ecology. Ecology is,
in this case, defined in its widest sense, which includes the cycling of resources, systems of social
organisation and the environmental context. Tectonics – a concept with a long tradition in architecture and architectural theory – is comparable to
ecology. It relates to the design and assembly of
structural elements, and implies a holistic approach
to materials, to construction technology and to
the design of structures. It is more than merely an
instrumental strategy: it extends into the poetic,
which elevates it to the status of a cultural practice.
This book is part of a research project conducted by leading academics associated with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture, the Aarhus School of Architecture and the
Danish Building Research Institute. With a collection of 13 essays by academic experts and practicing architects the book provides the first comprehensive representation of contemporary tectonic
thought and practices in architecture.

Kosmetik setzt auf die angeblich wirksamen
Tiefenstoffe, die den Körper von innen her säubern und klären sollen. Das gesamte Arsenal der
kosmetischen Ingredienzen beruht allerdings mehr
auf Überredung als auf Überzeugung. Kosmetik
ist immer Mimikry an ein Ideal. Sie operiert insofern mit einer Art Hungerikonographie, weil ihre
Bedingungen und Voraussetzungen das Bewußtsein von Mangel und zugleich das Versprechen
ihrer Abschaffung ist.
Kosmetik operiert in einem Koordinatensystem
von Kulturgeschichte und Ikonologie, Semiotik
und Soziologie, Psychologie und Rhetorik. So ist
ihre Sprache, ähnlich wie die der Mode, ein System von beträchtlicher Tiefe und Komplexität, die
die Subtexte der Futurologie und Geschichte, der
Medizin und Alchemie, der Nostalgie und Denkmalpflege benutzt.
Mit Hilfe der Kosmetik soll man attraktiver, verführerischer, ja unwiderstehlich werden. Diese
Sexiness wird Frauen wie Männern in Aussicht
gestellt. Dafür sei es lediglich erforderlich, entsprechende Cremes und Lotionen, Duftwässer
und die wohltemperierten Farbpaletten der Puder und Rouges, der Lippenstifte und Wimperntuschen zu erwerben: käufliche Schönheit!
Dabei ist die Überredungsmacht der Kosmetik
ebenso dominant wie unwiderstehlich. Wir alle
könnten, wenn wir wollten, uns wehren. Aber wir
wollen nicht.
Das Buch blättert das rhetorische System der
Kosmetikversprechen kultur- und mentalitätsgeschichtlich auf und analysiert die verbal/visuellen
Botschaften ausgewählter Beispiele.
Der international bekannte Architektur- und
Designhistoriker Volker Fischer war mehr als zehn
Jahre lang stellvertretender Direktor des Deutschen Architekturmuseums in Frankfurt am Main.
Von 1994 bis 2012 baute er im Museum für Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt eine neue Designabteilung auf. Von 1992 bis 2013 lehrte er an der
Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach Architektur- und Designgeschichte. Fischer ist in der

Early nomadic shelters, including caves, animal
skin tents and igloos, were used for protection
against the wind, rain, snow, sunlight and other
forces of nature. These basic homes also provided defence against predators and were used to
store a few important possessions. They were
temporary, and proximity to a water source was
of prime importance.
Health and comfort were not yet under consideration. As civilisation evolved, housing became more permanent, with increasing attention
to well-being. The housing and utilities available
in rich countries are vastly different from those in
poorer settings. Unlike in industrialised countries
where piped-in water, indoor toilets and sewage
systems are the norm, in the developing world
these facilities are often not available. Waterborne
enteric diseases, preventable by the supply of safe
water, hand washing and appropriate sanitation,
continue to be a major disease burden in poor
countries. Vector-borne diseases that can be controlled by screening and other barrier methods
also remain an important health problem. Safe,
comfortable and healthy homes are an essential
requisite for healthy living around the world, irrespective of culture or socio-economic status.
Throughout the tropics there is a huge diversity in house design and use of building supplies
based on centuries of indigenous experience,
customs and availability of local resources for
construction. These differences in building style
and materials affect the in-door conditions and
comfort of occupants, which in turn influence the
occupants’ exposure to certain infectious diseases. In this book the authors describe the architectural designs and materials of rural houses
in two countries in Asia (Thailand, Philippines)
and two in Africa (The Gambia, Tanzania). They
analyse the effect of design on the indoor climate
and relate these factors to health, notably the
risk of mosquito-borne infectious diseases such
as malaria. Based on their findings and a detailed
understanding of local building styles, they describe a series of house modifications that could
enhance comfort whilst reducing health risks.
Jakob Knudsen practices architecture as head
of Ingvartsen Architects in Copenhagen. He is
also an associate professor at The Royal Danish
Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture.
He has designed buildings in Europe, Asia and
Africa. Sustainability and climatic adaptation
are recurrent themes in his designs. Lorenz von
Seidlein is a physician and epidemiologist who
has practiced medicine in Africa, Asia, the United
States and Europe. He is currently affiliated with
the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin, Australia, and the Mahidol-Oxford Research
Unit in Bangkok, Thailand.

fußt. Der Oberste Priester in Rom ist der Pontifex
maximus, der höchste Brückenbauer zwischen
Mensch und Gott, zwischen Diesseits und Jenseits. Die Germanen sahen die Brücke im Regenbogen leibhaftig vor sich, es war ihr Lichtweg
nach Walhalla. Für die Verdrossenen sind Drogen
die Fluchtbrücke in andere sehr trügerische Erlebniswelten. Die Tradition schlägt Brücken von
Gestern nach Morgen. Was ist nicht alles Brücke:
die Musik, ein Brief, Radioklänge, Telephongespräche, Lichtsignale, Morsezeichen Rufe. Brückenschlagen ist infolgedessen nicht nur ein physischer Vorgang, sondern ein Ereignis des Geistes und des Gemütes, eine Sehnsucht der Seele.

Dies gilt um so mehr, wenn es sich um Brücken über den Rhein handelt, den bedeutendsten europäischen Fluß, der, wie kein anderer,
von Sagen und Mythen umrankt ist und Dichtung und Musik inspiriert hat. Bis zum 19. Jahrhundert wurde er fast ausschließlich mit Fähren
überquert. Im Zuge der Industrialisierung mußten
immer mehr Güter immer schneller transportiert
werden. Heute überqueren über 250 Brücken
den Fluß. Auch sie prägen nun die in ihrer Vielfalt unübertroffene Rheinlandschaft.
Riehle hat seit 1987 etwa 150 Rheinbrücken
vom Quellgebiet des Flusses in der Schweiz bis
zum Rheindelta in Holland photographiert. In
dem Buch werden davon die interessantesten
100 gezeigt.
Riehle, geboren 1949 als Sohn eines Architekten in Triberg im Schwarzwald, studierte von 1971
bis 1975 Industriedesign an der Folkwangschule
für Gestaltung in Essen und von 1975 bis 1980
freie Kunst an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
Er war hier Meisterschüler des Bildhauers Erwin
Heerich, der auf der Museumsinsel Hombroich
vielbeachtete Bauten geschaffen hat, die auch
das bildnerische Denken von Tomas Riehle
prägten. Gottfried Knapp hat als Redakteur der
Süddeutschen Zeitung das bild- und baukünstlerische Geschehen in Deutschland jahrzehntelang kritisch begleitet. Zu seinen zahlreichen
Publikationen gehören Monographien über Architekten, Maler, Zeichner und Photographen, Bildbände über Bauten und Monumente sowie Aufsätze in Anthologien.

Friedrich C. Wagner kommt als Architekt aus
der Schule von Egon Eiermann an der ehemaligen
Technischen Hochschule in Karlsruhe (heute Karlsruher Institut für Technologie). Nach dem Studium
hat er als Assistent von Rolf Lederbogen an dessen Karlsruher Lehrstuhl »Grundlagen der Architektur« unterrichtet. In dieser Zeit entstand auch
seine Dissertation über die Töpfersiedlungen auf
der Insel Sifnos. Nach einigen Jahren architektonischer Praxis im Büro von Erich Rossmann in
Karlsruhe war Wagner von 1974 bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahr 2002 Professor für »Grundlagen
