annual report 2014 our vision chair’s message Jewish Family Service is a community leader that empowers people to achieve fulfilling lives. Dear Friends of Jewish Family Service, our mission We provide exceptional social services, grounded in Jewish values, to support individuals and families from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. our values JFS values and honors the fundamental sanctity and worthiness of all human beings, Tselem Elohim. JFS demonstrates dignity and respect in every aspect of our work, Chesed. JFS puts into practice a commitment to heal and repair the world, Tikkun Olam. JFS operates with fiscal efficiency and integrity, Haginut Ba’asakim. jfs board & officers 2013-14 Officers Hermine Levey Weston, Chair Daniel Plotkin, Vice Chair Debra Ann Latour, Vice Chair Luis Escobar, Treasurer Anita Sarro, Secretary 2013-14 Board Members Amy Bricker Andrea Chasen Suzette Fontaine Collins Ellen Freyman Jonna Gaberman Sheldon Lyons Ronda Parish Todd Ratner Corrie Trattner Life Board Members Hyman Darling Joseph Dorison Michael Sorrell Bernice Thaler President & CEO Robert Marmor 1 As the Chair of Jewish Family Service, I continue to be inspired by the staff, the Board and how they translate the agency’s values into the provision of exceptional social services. This is the mission of the agency. There are successes to celebrate and challenges to acknowledge and overcome. I have a tendency to focus on success, even recognizing that challenges can turn into opportunities for more success. Jewish Family Service provides services across the spectrum of age and human diversity. We connect little tots with the joys of play through Jewish music. Adults learn about planning for their future. Our elders and their adult children are supported so loved ones can have safe and meaningful lives in their homes. This work strengthens our Jewish and non-Jewish communities by providing guidance and programs across the life cycle. Success! Our skilled and experienced staff literally open the door to domestic security for the refugee community in the Greater Springfield area. There are late night arrivals where families are brought to their new homes, continued supportive home visits, language classes, employment assistance and later, classes to help these new Americans gain citizenship. Success! These refugee support services are proudly provided. Yet, there are challenges in the community that must be addressed. The agency will continue to settle refugees, as we always have, with respect for the community in which they live, in cooperation with local officials, other faith-based and civic organizations, school systems and community groups. Success! In 2013, a group of dedicated board members, professional JFS staff and prominent community volunteers met and developed the agency’s strategic plan. We prioritized the goals of the plan and set about getting the foundation of the agency in order. Our priorities were to write a plan for human resource development and emergency preparedness. We reviewed the physical spaces required to provide services. JFS needs information technologies for programmatic services. The Board is committed to the implementation of these prioritized goals while acknowledging there are unforeseen limits to the human capacities. We recognize that it is important to acknowledge these challenges, and work within the restraints of time and circumstance. Services and planning for the future are part of the continuum of any system. Recognition of challenges and rising to meet them is part of the success of this organization. This is what families do; we support each other in difficult times and celebrate accomplishments. So it is with our Jewish Family Service organization. This is success! On behalf of everyone at JFS, I thank you for your support.
