Consecration Sunday Is Coming
Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not
view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather,
such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in
their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a
percentage of their incomes.
Our congregation’s stewardship committee has selected the New Consecration Sunday
Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous
giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year.
New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to
give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to
receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues,
we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act
of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and
systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God
calling me to give?”
During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our attendees and
members to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent,
and educational ministries in this community and around the world.
Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so
voluntarily by attending morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge people to
attend who feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a
way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card.
We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning
worship our guest leader will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration,
climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.
We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the
Consecration Sunday team and Session members. Since we will make no follow-up visits
to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and
commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship.

Spiritual Checkups!
Since January our elders and members of committees have been making appointments with me for a
“spiritual checkup.” If you have heard about these and would like to schedule an appointment to
review your own spiritual health, please contact Neesa for an appointment. Usually these
conversations last 45 minutes and are a great opportunity to share matters of concern and issues for
prayer. It is also a great opportunity for your pastor to get to know you and for you to get to know
your pastor. You do not have to be a leader or church member to benefit from this aspect of the
church’s ministry. Ask me or one of our elders if you have questions about what is involved. Appointments are
available at various times of day on a first-come basis.

~ CHILDREN’S CHOIR ~
Children’s Choir meets from 9-9:45 am on the fourth floor in the children’s choir room. All singers in
1st-6th grade are welcome. No prior experience necessary!
~ MUSIC ON THE MENU ~
Our church has received funds from Tennessee Arts Commission through Clarksville-Montgomery County Arts &
Heritage for a grant to provide live, professional music at Loaves and Fishes at least once per month for the next
ten months. To date featured groups have been Cumberland Winds (jazz) and Red River Breeze (a Celtic group).
Loaves and Fishes is housed in our AOC and serves about 150 meals each day. Meals are served from 10:30-noon,
Monday-Saturday. The public is welcome at Loaves & Fishes anytime, so feel free to stop and enjoy "Music on the
Menu" with the diners!

The adult choir is currently welcoming new
singers who are interested in participating with
us for the month of Advent. If you sometimes
think about joining choir, but you hesitate
because you think you might not have enough
time to devote to weekly rehearsals or to singing
with us every Sunday of the church year, this may
be your opportunity! We are already beginning
to rehearse music for our December 14th
Christmas Cantata. Choose an upcoming
Wednesday night from 7-8:00 and try us out. We
meet on the 4th floor. If you enjoy yourself and
decide you want to commit only for the Sundays
of Advent, we'd love to have you!

GRATITUDE TO THE GILLESPIE’S
AND ADAMES’
With grateful appreciation we announce
the retirement of Ken & Nancy Gillespie
and Margaret & Leo Adames as our
"Communion preparers". For years they have
come in on Communion Sundays and set up the
bread and grape juice for the table, so that we all
may partake. We are looking for 2 people, or
couples, to set up on Sunday mornings. There
will be an opportunity to work with the
Gilespie’s and Adames’ in Nov. and Dec. so that
what is involved will be clear. Anyone interested
should contact Neesa in the office or Jane
Wallace as soon as possible.
COLLECTION OF ALUMINUM (UPDATE)
We are pleased at an opportunity proffered by
Charlie Foust to allow the congregation to
symbolically become a part of the new bell tower
windows. As has been reported in past
newsletters and on our Facebook page, the
Clarksville Foundry is in the process of casting
replacement windows for the three small rose
windows in the bell tower. While Charlie does
not need additional aluminum for the project, he
has volunteered to collect aluminum from
members of the congregation and the community
to be melted for use in the frames of our new
windows. Anyone who would like to donate
aluminum (pots , pans, old barbeque grills, angle
or tubing [NO CANS] to become a part of these
windows is encouraged to place it in the bin
beside the foundry. Clarksville Foundry is
located at 1140 Red River St.
P.S. We WILL NOT be collecting aluminum cans
after all and do apologize for any inconvenience
this may have caused.
MEMORIAL GARDEN
The First Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden has been designed to minister to the
needs of members and their families by
providing an appropriate and carefully maintained consecrated site for the interment of
ash remains. The Memorial Garden is intended to be a place for church members to reflect
and linger individually or gather as a group. A
renewed understanding of the opportunity to
celebrate eternal life and memorialize the
worth of individuals has guided the development of this garden. The garden has been designed to close the circle of ministry from
birth to death while providing a continual
physical relationship with the church. Contact
the church office for details.

Room in the Inn runs November-March. Please
keep this ministry in your prayers. Volunteer
hosts prepare, serve, and clean up an evening
meal with 10-12 guests. The program is held at

STEWARDSHIP SEASON FOR
CHILDREN
As our church calendar turns to Stewardship
Season, our children's messages will
incorporate Mark St. Germain's "Three Cups"
into the weekly lessons along with each week's
scripture. Each family with children will be
presented with a copy of the book that will
hopefully help to begin life-long conversations
about the spiritual values involved in learning
to manage money well. It is a book about
spiritual values, as well as financial
discipline. It is our hope that the book will be
helpful to families as they begin conversations
about how to spend, save, and give in
responsible ("grown up") and fun ("childish")
ways.

We have the opportunity to share God’s love
and our good fortune with some children right
here in Clarksville. We will once again
participate in the Angel Tree project organized
by the Salvation Army. The “tree” will be hung
in the hall outside the church office by Sunday,
Nov. 16. Please select an angel from the tree.
Return you UNWRAPPED gift with the paper
angel attached as soon as possible but no later
than Sunday, Dec. 7. Gifts will be collected in
the history room. Thank you for your continued

The Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarksville, Tennessee, met Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, in the library at 6
pm. The meeting was opened with the lighting of the Christ candle, reading of Psalm 104, reflection and prayer by
Pastor Greg Glover.
A Communion sign-up sheet for Nov. 2 was circulated (intinction). Home communion will be served also.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: On Preschool Sunday, November 9, Preschool families will be invited to stay for lunch
(at the cost of FPC). Mary Linn Sadler indicated the Preschool can contribute funds. The Children’s Musical will be
part of the Cantata on Dec. 14. The Children’s Nativity Pageant will be during the Sunday school hour on Dec. 21.
CONGREGATIONAL CARE: The committee is sending care packages to college students. Trunk or Treat & Fun
Carnival will be Oct. 26.
FINANCE AND STEWARDSHIP: Tracy Jackson reported expenses were greater than income and we are $47,500
behind in the budget. The Worship Committee recommends usher chairs (or 2 ushers) should count loose cash weekly
and fill out the report in the bank bag drawer.
COMMUNICATIONS, FELLOWSHIP, HISTORICAL PRESERVATION, HOSPITALITY, MISSION, &
PRESBYTERY: No report
PASTOR/STAFF: Greg Glover presented slides on the summary of the leadership retreat/strategic planning results.
PROFESSIONAL STAFF: Ed Ritter reported the committee meets tomorrow. Dec. 7 has been set for a brunch
between worship services to celebrate Neesa Trotter’s retirement.
PROPERTY: Steve Griffey reported work continues on bell tower windows. The Committee recommends using a
local artist to work up designs for the stained glass windows. The contract cost will be $1800.
PW: Sue Reynolds reported attendance at luncheons continues to be up and that could be due in part to bulletin inserts.
SERVICE: Sue Reynolds reported $30,500 has been distributed to date this year; 212 clients have been served (57%
of which were new clients).
WORSHIP: Jane Wallace reported that since Ken & Nancy Gillespie and Margaret & Leo Adames are stepping down
from communion preparation, new procedures will be put in place and that session members will be expected to serve
on a rotating basis.

Steve Griffey reported the Nominating Committee intends to nominate the following names on October 26 to serve as
active Elders: Daniel Ellis (youth), Charlie Foust, Gail Hudson, David Kanervo, Phil Kemmerly, Margaret Wallace
Lyle, Ted McCurdy, Sam Mills, Karla Posey.
Mary Linn Sadler passed out an Emergency Supply Tool Kit handout and gave a report. Supplies on the handout must
be gathered and on-site for emergencies such as flood, tornadoes, etc. This is a new licensing regulation by the TN
Dept. of Children’s Services.

The Congregational Care Committee has emergency cards to have on file at the church
office. These are hard copies (not stored on a computer) so we can access them immediately
in case of an emergency. Cards are available in the vestibule and church office. Each person
in the church will need to have one. Information will be kept confidential.
